Patients treated for breast cancer are at risk of developing breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). A significant proportion of patients treated for breast cancer are opting to undergo a contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM). Currently, it remains unclear as to whether the relative volume change (RVC) equation may be used as an alternative to the weight adjusted change (WAC) equation to quantify BCRL in patients who undergo CPM. In order to simplify BCRL screening, our cohort of patients who underwent a CPM (n=310) was matched by BMI to a subset of patients who underwent unilateral breast surgery (n=310). Arm volume measurements were obtained via an optoelectronic perometer preoperatively, postoperatively, and in the follow-up setting every 6-12 months. The correlation of ipsilateral RVC and WAC values for those who underwent bilateral surgery was calculated (r=0.60). Contralateral WAC values for patients in both cohorts were compared, and there was no significant difference between the two distributions in variance (p=0.446). The RVC equation shows potential to be used to quantify ipsilateral postoperative arm volume changes for patients who undergo a CPM. However, a larger trial in which RVC and WAC values are prospectively assessed is needed.

Abstract The dynamic theory of martensitic transformations (MT) considers the formation of habit planes of martensite crystals as a consequence of the propagation of a controlling wave process (CWP). The general ideology makes it possible, by comparing the observed habits with calculations of the elastic fields of defects (as a rule, dislocations), to identify nucleation centers. In a number of cases (In-Tl alloys, Ni50Mn50 alloys, Heusler alloys …) under MT in the shape memory alloys, {110} habits are observed (in the basis of the initial cubic phase), which often have a fine twin structure with twin boundaries of the same type. This highly symmetric structure is described by the CWP containing longitudinal waves (both relatively long-wavelength ℓ and short-wavelength s) propagating along the 4-order symmetry axes. In this paper, it is shown that such habits are associated with rectilinear segments of dislocation loops with directions Λ along <001> and Burgers vectors along <010> (or <110>) orthogonal to Λ, both for sliding and for prismatic loops. The tetragonality, the relative volume change during the MT, and the dependence of the start temperature M s on changes in the concentration of alloy components are also briefly discussed.

Abstract The present study objectified to evaluate the trophic relationships and the possible aggressive mimicry involving Carnegiella strigata, Carnegiella marthae and Gnathocharax steindachneri, in lowland forest streams. Samplings occurred in November 2002, March and August 2003 in Amanã Sustainable Development Reserve (ASDR). The total of 943 fish was caught, being 79.43% of C. marthae, 3.18% of C. strigata and 17.39% of G. steindachneri. Stomach contents, degree of stomach repletion, relative volume and frequency of occurrence of food items were evaluated. Thirteen food items were identified, and the presence of terrestrial and aquatic insects indicates the high dependence of these species and the flooded forest. Low feeding overlap was observed between Carnegiella strigata and C. marthae compared to Gnathocharax steindachneri. However, the overlap between the two Carnegiella species was relatively high, which could explain the low frequency of syntopic occurrence among these species, suggesting a possible case of competitive exclusion.

Abstract Objectives QyScore® is an imaging analysis tool certified in Europe (CE marked) and the US (FDA cleared) for the automatic volumetry of grey and white matter (GM and WM respectively), hippocampus (HP), amygdala (AM), and white matter hyperintensity (WMH). Here we compare QyScore® performances with the consensus of expert neuroradiologists. Methods Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and the relative volume difference (RVD) for GM, WM volumes were calculated on 50 3DT1 images. DSC and the F1 metrics were calculated for WMH on 130 3DT1 and FLAIR images. For each index, we identified thresholds of reliability based on current literature review results. We hypothesized that DSC/F1 scores obtained using QyScore® markers would be higher than the threshold. In contrast, RVD scores would be lower. Regression analysis and Bland–Altman plots were obtained to evaluate QyScore® performance in comparison to the consensus of three expert neuroradiologists. Results The lower bound of the DSC/F1 confidence intervals was higher than the threshold for the GM, WM, HP, AM, and WMH, and the higher bounds of the RVD confidence interval were below the threshold for the WM, GM, HP, and AM. QyScore®, compared with the consensus of three expert neuroradiologists, provides reliable performance for the automatic segmentation of the GM and WM volumes, and HP and AM volumes, as well as WMH volumes. Conclusions QyScore® represents a reliable medical device in comparison with the consensus of expert neuroradiologists. Therefore, QyScore® could be implemented in clinical trials and clinical routine to support the diagnosis and longitudinal monitoring of neurological diseases. Key Points • QyScore® provides reliable automatic segmentation of brain structures in comparison with the consensus of three expert neuroradiologists. • QyScore® automatic segmentation could be performed on MRI images using different vendors and protocols of acquisition. In addition, the fast segmentation process saves time over manual and semi-automatic methods. • QyScore® could be implemented in clinical trials and clinical routine to support the diagnosis and longitudinal monitoring of neurological diseases.

Analysis of chest CT scans can be used in detecting parts of lungs that are affected by infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Determining the volume of lungs affected by lesions is essential for formulating treatment recommendations and prioritizing patients by severity of the disease. In this article we adopted an approach based on using an ensemble of deep convolutional neural networks for segmentation of slices of lung CT scans. Using our models, we are able to segment the lesions, evaluate patients’ dynamics, estimate relative volume of lungs affected by lesions, and evaluate the lung damage stage. Our models were trained on data from different medical centers. We compared predictions of our models with those of six experienced radiologists, and our segmentation model outperformed most of them. On the task of classification of disease severity, our model outperformed all the radiologists.

AbstractThe Earth-like planets and moons in our solar system have iron-rich cores, silicate mantles, and a basaltic crust. Differentiated icy moons can have a core and a mantle and an outer water–ice layer. Indirect evidence for several icy moons suggests that this ice is underlain by or includes a water-rich ocean. Similar processes are at work in the interiors of these planets and moons, including heat transport by conduction and convection, melting and volcanism, and magnetic field generation. There are significant differences in detail, though, in both bulk chemical compositions and relative volume of metal, rock and ice reservoirs. For example, the Moon has a small core [~ 0.2 planetary radii (RP)], whereas Mercury’s is large (~ 0.8 RP). Planetary heat engines can operate in somewhat different ways affecting the evolution of the planetary bodies. Mercury and Ganymede have a present-day magnetic field while the core dynamo ceased to operate billions of years ago in the Moon and Mars. Planets and moons differ in tectonic style, from plate-tectonics on Earth to bodies having a stagnant outer lid and possibly solid-state convection underneath, with implications for their magmatic and atmosphere evolution. Knowledge about their deep interiors has improved considerably thanks to a multitude of planetary space missions but, in comparison with Earth, the data base is still limited. We describe methods (including experimental approaches and numerical modeling) and data (e.g., gravity field, rotational state, seismic signals, magnetic field, heat flux, and chemical compositions) used from missions and ground-based observations to explore the deep interiors, their dynamics and evolution and describe as examples Mercury, Venus, Moon, Mars, Ganymede and Enceladus.

The problem of citizens' mobility is crucial for most Ukrainian cities. At the same time, besides urban travelling, external travelling also impacts the urban transport system. That is why the study of regularities of external mobility will allow considering it during urban systems planning. In this article, the movement of citizens to Ukrainian cities with a population above 70 thousand persons is reviewed. The source of the data is information from mobile operator Kyivstar. The connection between the quality of life in cities and the general level of external mobility (depending on the number of citizens in cities, they are divided into five clusters) is established. It is detected that larger mobility is inherent for cities located in the western and the central parts of the country. The average value of the consolidated index of the assessment of city possibilities (an integral indicator that considers the possibility to express opinions freely, travel between city districts, impact the process of decision-making in the city, etc.) is determined. There is a positive correlation between this index and the volume of external mobility, i.e., the relative volume of external mobility is larger to cities where citizens admit a higher quality of life. The averaged over the year, an average number of trips which were made from every city is calculated, and for every trip, its distance is determined (by the road network). Also, the regularities of external mobility to cities with different sizes (the average length of trips changes within 39,0 – 56,5 km; 95% of trips are on the distance of 150–250 km; 99% of trips – on the distance of no more than 400–600 km). Obtained results will provide the opportunity to form further recommendations about improving the city's transport system, which should consider the daily volume of its visitors and the tendencies of its (system) change in case of improvement of the quality of life in the city).

Purpose Compared with cusp height and area deviation ratio, volume error (VE) caused by the layer height could represent the stair-case effect more comprehensively. The proposed relative volume error (RVE)-based adaptive slicing method takes VE rather than cusp height as slicing criteria, which can improve part surface quality for functionalized additive manufacturing. Design/methodology/approach This paper proposes a volumetric adaptive slicing method of manifold mesh for rapid prototyping based on RVE. The pre-height sequences of manifold mesh are first preset to reduce the SE by dividing the whole layer sequence into several parts. A breadth-first search-based algorithm has been developed to generate a solid voxelization to get VE. A new parameter RVE is proposed to evaluate the VE caused by the sequence of the layer positions. The RVE slicing is conducted by iteratively adjusting the layer height sequences under different constraint conditions. Findings Three manifold models are used to verify the proposed method. Compared with uniform slicing with 0.2 mm layer height, cusp height-based method and area deviation-based method, the standard deviations of RVE of all three models are improved under the proposed method. The surface roughness measured by the confocal laser scanning microscope proves that the proposed RVE method can greatly improve part surface quality by minimizing RVE. Originality/value This paper proposes an RVE-based method to balance the surface quality and print time. RVE could be calculated by voxelized parts with required accuracy at a very fast speed by parallel.

Background. Improvement of the technical aspects of surgery in aesthetic surgery led to an increase in the number of transactions and significant increase contingent of women who are turning to specialized clinics. But it also significantly increased the proportion of patients with a variety of concomitant diseases requiring new approaches to operational technologies and special attention in the postoperative period. In this group of patients is high risk of intraoperative and postoperative complications significantly limits the range of indications. So to prevent these complications is an important question when planning operations in aesthetic surgery of the face. Objective. Determine structural and functional changes of temporal area skin in women of different age groups with an additional internal pathology. Methods. Intraoperative biopsy material of skin of 104 women at the age from 19 to 73 years, that was taken during standard surgery instrumentations for different defects of face skin correction, was investigated. Results and conclusion. It was determined, that involutive dynamic of microvessel condition in papillary layer of derma coincides with grade reduction of relative volume of microvessels bed. Microcirculation age changes include structural disorders of intrapapillary capillary loops, disorganization of arterioles in papillary and reticular layers of derma, disorders of venules because of the changes in microenvironmental fibrillar network. It is typical at the patients with nicotinic dependence, ischemic heart disease, hypertonic disease, a diabetes, and also adiposity of a different degree essential infringement of microvessels bed structure criteria of skin condition that gives the basis for allocation of the given contingent of patients as group of high intraoperative and postoperative risk at carrying out of frontlift.
