Species-environment relationships in three woodlands using canonical correspondence analysis

Relations  between plant communities and environment were investigated in an ecological  study in three woodlands in the south of Flanders, Belgium. The vegetation  was sampled and three environmental variables (light penetration, chemical  composition of the soil and species composition of the tree and shrub layer)  were measured. By application of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA),  relations between the vegetation and the environmental variables could be  evaluated. The percentage of Fagus sylvatica in the basal area seemed to be the most decisive environmental  variable determining the presence of plant communities. It could be derived  as well that CCA can be a very useful technique for the determination of the  indicator values of the species for their environment.

The relationship between the weed communities and environmental variables such as soil, crop, and management was investigated in two provinces of Canada. The frequencies of weed species were recorded in cereal and oilseed fields in Saskatchewan (2244 fields over 4 years) and Manitoba (864 fields over 3 years), Canada. Information on some of the physical characteristics of the fields and on the management practices imposed on them was also collected, in part by questionnaire. The two kinds of data were ordinated together using canonical correspondence analysis to assess the relationships between the species and the environmental variables. In the Saskatchewan data, there was a clear and consistent separation of the species into groups along an axis correlated with soil zone and the associated climatic gradient. In the Manitoba data, the same groups of species did not separate as clearly or as consistently, although geographic region was a major determinant of the weed communities. The greater variability may be due to the fact that the gradient of soil types is much more restricted in Manitoba and not as closely correlated with climatic conditions. In both provinces, culture practices were less important as correlates of the weed community composition than soil type or, to a certain extent, the previous crop. An analysis of the vegetation of Goedverwacht farm in the mixed bushveld of the Northern Province is presented. Releves were compiled in 33 stratified random sample plots. Eight distinct plant communities were identified by means ofBraun-Blanquet pro-cedures. Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) was applied to the floristic data set using the computer programme DECORANA (Detrended Correspondence Analysis) to determine a probable environmental gradient and to facilitate in the identification of management units. The computer programme CANOCO (Canonical Correspondence Analysis) was used to apply canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to the floristic data set. Two management units were determined by means of vegetation ordinations and soil data. A classification, description and ecological interpretation of the plant communities as well as a description of the management units are presented.

The Tall-Herb and Tall-Grass Plant Communities of the ClassMulgedio-Aconiteteain the Subalpine Belt of the Krivánska Malá Fatra MTS (Slovakia)The following paper reports the results of phytosociological research of tall-herb and tall-herb plant communities within the classMulgedio-Aconiteteain the subalpine belt of the Krivánska Malá Fatra Mts. The data set of 209 relevés was sampled and analysed using numerical classification and ordination. Major ecological gradients were interpreted using Ellenberg's indicator values and the Shannon-Wiener diversity index. Aim of Study: The complex community of riparian reserve forest has become of great concern for researchers to develop more viable management strategies. The paper aimed to evaluate the current structural diversity of vegetation and its association with the physical environment of low-lying forest for proposing the rehabilitation interventions.  Area of Study: We studied two forests, Chung-Mohlanwal and Dhana-Bheni on both riverbanks along river Ravi in the Jhok riparian reserve forest situated in the southwest of Lahore, Pakistan.Material and Methods: A methodological framework was developed based firstly, on direct comparison of diversity (measured by Hill numbers) and structure of existed vegetation layers (trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses) and environmental factors (canopy structure, anthropogenic activities, microclimate, and soil characteristics) between the two forests and secondly, on environment-vegetation association using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) ordination method.Results: Dhana forest was more diverse vegetation layers (Shannon Diversity index 1D < 11) and intact due to plantation of uneven-aged tree stands of varied stand basal area and stem density. Microclimate under this forest could not support the dominant understory positively unlike the monoculture forest. On the contrary, Chung-Mohlanwal forest was under the influence of uncontrolled grazing activities, fuelwood extraction, and invasive species. Bankfull discharge determination using the new Invertebrate Bankfull Assessment MethodAlong the paper the new method called Invertebrate Bankfull Assessment method (IBA method) of determination of bankfull discharge is presented. The investigation of bankfull discharge using IBA were performed within one Polish Carpathian stream in the mountain region: the Ochotnica Stream. As an index of bankfull the existence of certain species of invertebrates was used which are present and resistant to specific water discharge conditions. The borders within a cross section of the mountain stream with a gravel bed were defined where characteristic invertebrates are present which are recognized as bankfull borders. Finally three invertebrates benches (IB-ms) were recognized which are characterized by very specific invertebrate species. Bankfull discharge was calculated up to this IB-ms and corelated using Canonical Correspondence Analysis with other values of bankfull calculated for a cross section using different bankfull.

The vegetation in the tropical rainforest of New Guinea consists of a large number of species that interact with each other within and among species. While several studies have attempted to reveal the diversity of flora of New Guinea, little is known about plant communities that develop associations. This study aimed to investigate the associations of tree species in lowland tropical forest in New Guinea. The associations depicted in this study were in the form of conspecific associations (among small and large individuals within same species) and heterospecific (among individuals of different species and divided into under and upper story). We established 48 rectangular plots created in Murkim and Teiraplu as part of Pegunungan Bintang Regency, Papua Province. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to analyze heterospecific and conspecific associations. The results showed that the understory and upper story vegetation had different patterns of heterospecific association. The understory configured three heterospecific associations, consisting of 5, 13, and 90 species, while the upper story formed four heterospecific associations with 4, 8, 11, and 63 species. The analysis of conspecific associations showed of 149 tree species recorded in the study sites, only 66 species that had both small and large individuals, displaying the pattern of conspecific association. Among them, 41 species had positive associations while 25 species had negative associations. Our findings enrich the knowledge in theoretical ecology of tropical forests, especially in New Guinea.
