Most Arab cities are experiencing tremendous urbanization processes and challenges. Despite the fact that Arab cities are developing fast, social factors in planning and urban design have been neglected. Many of the urban problems that Arab cities experience today result from an unbalanced approach to development, where physical development has been given priority over spiritual, cultural. and social requirements. The concern of the societal needs in urban planning and design is often intended for adults regardless of the growing number and needs of the younger population. This paper focuses on children because their needs are the least considered in planning and design of cities. The paper motivates urban authorities, of the Arab world, to be sensitive to the needs of urban children and to find suitable tools and mechanisms to consider children in their strategic and physical planning process. Towns and cities must be made safe and children friendly. This paper discusses the various forces that influence Arab children in the wake of industrialization, urbanization, 1nodernization, and globalization. It will specifically focus on diverse social and cultural ills that have emerged among Arab children, which are attributed to living in a stressful physical environment, one that neglects their needs and marginalizes their existence in the fabric of the developing cities. This paper will address the following questions: why are cities not planned with the needs of children in mind? What are the characteristics of cities that are positive for children? In addition, the paper calls for a more holistic approach to planning and rephrasing the role of urban planners and designers in producing spaces and places for Arab children where they will enjoy their growing cities and neighborhoods.

Historic centres constitute a substantial urban fabric which concentrate cultural elements that have been shaped through the centuries. The current chapter investigates the role of public spaces in Greek historical centres and the role of smart tools and applications in their integrated conservation. The paper examines three public spaces of Athens historic center and analyzes the threats and opportunities they face. Urban planning and design have an essential role in the historic centres' public spaces revival, and towards this direction, smart technologies can be decisive. The chapter evaluates parameters that shape historic public spaces as urban design, sustainable moblity, urban functions and participatory processes and it proposes the integration of ICT in these fields in order to make historic public spaces vibrant urban areas.

Hailed as one of the best examples of collaborative urban management practices between the local government and informal traders. In a postapartheid South Africa, there was a national desire to transform the old systems of governance, which in Warwick translated to city government institutions making an effort to include informal traders in the policy making and management processes. The main aim was to promote inclusive urban planning and design.

Since walkability plays an important role in active commuting, several cities are actively promoting its integration into urban and environmental planning policies. This study examined the association between walkability and active commuting in Seoul, Korea. A multilevel logistic regression model was used to examine the correlation between Walkability Score and the probability of active commuting after controlling for individual variables. The analysis used 129,044 individual samples nested within 424 administrative districts (dongs). In this study, three models were tested: Model 1 contained only individual variables, Model 2 contained individual variables and Walkability Score, and Model 3 included neighborhood-level variables in addition to the variables of Model 2. The results showed that the Walkability Score was significantly correlated with the odds of active commuting. Specifically, every additional one-point increase in Walkability Score was associated with 0.3% higher odds of active commuting (Model 2: odds ratio (OR) = 1.003, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.001–1.005; Model 3: OR = 1.003, 95% CI = 1.001–1.006). Additionally, public transportation density was also positively correlated with the odds of active commuting. The odds of active commuting were positively correlated with younger age, female, lower-income, and having no car. Based on the findings, policy recommendations in urban planning and design, transport engineering, and environmental planning are provided.

Sound is receiving increasing attention in urban planning and design due to its effects on human health and quality of life. Soundscape researchers have sought ecologically valid measures to describe and explain the complex relationship between people and their auditory environments, largely employing laboratory studies and neglecting the active role of activity. This chapter proposes a situated cognition approach to study the relationship between context, use of space, and the ways in which users describe and evaluate sounds and their auditory environments in an urban pocket park. It draws on empirical data gathered in Parc du Portugal in Montreal, Canada using a mixed-methods research design that integrates ethnographic observations, on-site questionnaires, and behavioral mapping using a geo-spatial app to offer a situated understanding of the human auditory experience in its full complexity, with an emphasis on the mediating role of activity on the user-auditory environment relationship.

This paper starting from the basic concept of green settlements to discuss the importance of natural ecological network to the development of green settlements; discuss the active role of green system and water system in the development of green settlements, and how to utilize it in urban planning and design; discuss land use patterns and the development pattern of street, also related to the land, air, water, plants and other natural environmental factors. Proposed that if a development model was adapted to obtain the harmonious coexistence of urban development and natural environment in the green residential development, we can obtain not only a good ecological benefits, but also get a good social and economic gains.

The role of the built environment in improving public health through fostering physical activity has come under increased scrutiny in recent years. This study investigates relationships between walking activity and the configuration of green spaces in Greater London. Pedestrian activity for N = 54,910 walking trip stages is gathered through the London Travel Demand Survey (LTDS), with routes between origin and destination mapped onto the street network from the Integrated Transport Network of Ordnance Survey. Green spaces were extracted from UKMap and agglomerated to form London’s hundreds of parks. Regressions of pedestrian activity on park configuration, controlling for built environment metrics, revealed that catchments around smaller parks have more walking trips. Irregularity of park shape has the opposite effect. Park density, measured as number of parks inside a catchment, is insignificant in regression. Parks adjacent to retail areas were associated with pronounced increases in walking. The study contributes to landscape, urban management, environmental policy and urban planning and design literature. The evidence provides implications for performance-oriented policy and design decisions that configure a city’s green spaces to improve citizens’ public health through enhancing walkability.
