AbstractThe negative- U impurity stripes confining the edge channels of semiconductor quantum wells are shown to allow the effective cooling inside in the process of the spin-dependent transport, with the reduction of the electron-electron interaction. The aforesaid promotes also the creation of composite bosons and fermions by the capture of single magnetic flux quanta on the edge channels under the conditions of low sheet density of carriers, thus opening new opportunities for the registration of the high temperature de Haas-van Alphen, 300 K, quantum Hall, 77 K, effects as well as quantum conductance staircase in the silicon sandwich structure.

Electrical transport measurements are reported on 2-DEG in a CdMnTe quantum well structure. At low magnetic fields the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations show a beating pattern with nodes which are a direct consequence of the large Pauli paramagnetism. The effective electron Zeeman splitting ( E Z) has been tuned via the s-d exchange interaction in order to probe the quantum Hall effect under conditions of vanishing Zeeman energy. We have observed that reducing E Z to zero does not necessary imply a closing of the spin gap.

Abstract We discuss spin-dependent transport via tunneling Aharonov-Bohm interferometer formed by helical edge states tunnel-coupled to helical leads. We focus on the experimentally relevant high-temperature case as compared to the level spacing and obtain the full 4×4 matrix of transmission coefficients in the presence of magnetic impurities. We show that spin conserving and spin-flip transmission coefficients of the setup can be effectively tuned by the magnetic flux. These features are attractive due to possible applications for spintronics, magnetic field detection, and quantum computing.

Both rich fundamental physics of microcavities and their intriguing potential applications are addressed in this book, oriented to undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as to physicists and engineers. We describe the essential steps of development of the physics of microcavities in their chronological order. We show how different types of structures combining optical and electronic confinement have come into play and were used to realize first weak and later strong light–matter coupling regimes. We discuss photonic crystals, microspheres, pillars and other types of artificial optical cavities with embedded semiconductor quantum wells, wires and dots. We present the most striking experimental findings of the recent two decades in the optics of semiconductor quantum structures. We address the fundamental physics and applications of superposition light-matter quasiparticles: exciton-polaritons and describe the most essential phenomena of modern Polaritonics: Physics of the Liquid Light. The book is intended as a working manual for advanced or graduate students and new researchers in the field.
