AbstractLight scattering in water and aqueous solutions of NaCl and glucose under the action of a magnetic field with an induction of 0.43 mT is studied. It is established that the magnetic field does not affect the light scattering in water and aqueous solution of NaCl. For an aqueous glucose solution, the switching on of a field leads to the appearance of large fluctuations in the scattering intensity. It has been shown that these fluctuations are due to turbulization of the solution that is caused by the magnetic field.

The formation and orientation of field-induced structures in magnetorheological (MR) fluids subject to rotating magnetic fields have been studied using two optical methods: scattering dichroism and small angle light scattering (SALS). The SALS patterns show how these chain-like aggregates follow the magnetic field with the same frequency but with a retarded phase angle for all the frequencies measured. Using scattering dichroism two different behaviors for both, dichroism and phase lag, are found below or above a critical frequency. Experimental results have been reproduced by a simple model considering the torques balance on the chain-like aggregates.

The viscosity of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, KH2PO4 (KDP), aqueous solution within magnetic field was studied. Experimental results showed that, the viscosity of saturated KDP solution exhibited multiple extreme values when the magnetic field intensity increased from 0 Gs to 2250 Gs. Influences of the magnetic field intensity on the viscosity of KDP solution were very complicated. It’s concerned with the temperature and the concentration of solution. As the KDP was produced from aqueous solution within magnetic field, the temperature and the concentration of solution also needed to be carefully controlled. Magnetic field with intensity values of 300 Gs, 600 Gs and 1800 Gs, all have the strong effects on the structures of KDP aqueous solution.
