BACKGROUND Many Canadians have mental health needs, and it can be challenging not knowing where to go for mental health information, services, and support. The website eMentalHealth.ca was created to facilitate and assist Canadians to (1) learn about mental health, (2) screen for common mental health issues, and (3) find mental health services and support. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to use multiple methods to learn about visitors of eMentalHealth.ca, their perceptions, and their satisfaction with the website. METHODS Website analytics (Google Analytics) provided information about the number of unique visits to the website and how the site was used. Web-based self-administered surveys were used to gather additional information on users’ characteristics and to assess their perception of the website and satisfaction with the website. RESULTS Web analytic results showed that from January 1 to December 31, 2017, there were 651,107 users, with 1.97 million page views. Users were more often female than male, and the majority of users were aged 35 years and older. Most users were located in Canada (612,806/651,107, 94.12%), and the most common city of origin of users was Toronto (101,473/651,107, 15.58%), followed by Ottawa (76,692/651,107, 11.78%), and Montreal (26,621/651,107, 4.09%). Web-based surveys were completed by a total of 370 respondents from June to December 2017. Overall, the majority of users were satisfied with the website (93.0%, 320 out of 344 responses). Positive feedback was related to the content of the website as a helpful resource, and negative feedback was related to technical difficulties as well as the design of the main page. This analysis will be used to help the team with ongoing improvements to the website, for example, improving technical issues and homepage usability. CONCLUSIONS Most visitors reported satisfaction with their use of eMentalHealth.ca to learn about mental health as well as where to find help. Mental health websites such as eMentalHealth.ca are a low-cost way to increase public awareness about mental health.

In order to disseminate mental health information to the Cantonese-speaking Chinese immigrants in the greater Houston area in the United States, the author initiated a local radio program to deliver 25 mental health topics to educate and stimulate the interests of the listeners. Once a week for 25 weeks, six shows were pre-recorded, and 19 shows were broadcasted live to receive phone-in calls from listeners. Among these weekly radio shows, 31 calls were received and answered. All female callers (n = 22) addressed parenting and emotional issues, while most male callers (n = 8; 89%) described being maltreated by their wife. The purpose of this qualitative practice update is to use content analysis data to inform practitioners about the unaddressed mental health needs of Chinese immigrants and make service planning suggestions based on "unheard voices".

Background: Online mental health information represents important resources for people living with mental health issues. Suitability of mental health information for effective self-care remains understudied, despite the increasing needs for more actionable mental health resources, especially among young people. Objective: We aimed to develop Bayesian machine learning classifiers as data-based decision aids for the assessment of the actionability of credible mental health information for people with mental health issues and diseases. Methods: We collected and classified creditable online health information on mental health issues into generic mental health (GEN) information and patient-specific (PAS) mental health information. GEN and PAS were both patient-oriented health resources developed by health authorities of mental health and public health promotion. GENs were non-classified online health information without indication of targeted readerships; PASs were developed purposefully for specific populations (young, elderly people, pregnant women, and men) as indicated by their website labels. To ensure the generalisability of our model, we chose to develop a sparse Bayesian machine learning classifier using Relevance Vector Machine (RVM). Results: Using optimisation and normalisation techniques, we developed a best-performing classifier through joint optimisation of natural language features and min-max normalisation of feature frequencies. The AUC (0.957), sensitivity (0.900), and specificity (0.953) of the best model were statistically higher (p < 0.05) than other models using parallel optimisation of structural and semantic features with or without feature normalisation. We subsequently evaluated the diagnostic utility of our model in the clinic by comparing its positive (LR+) and negative likelihood ratios (LR−) and 95% confidence intervals (95% C.I.) as we adjusted the probability thresholds with the range of 0.1 and 0.9. We found that the best pair of LR+ (18.031, 95% C.I.: 10.992, 29.577) and LR− (0.100, 95% C.I.: 0.068, 0.148) was found when the probability threshold was set to 0.45 associated with a sensitivity of 0.905 (95%: 0.867, 0.942) and specificity of 0.950 (95% C.I.: 0.925, 0.975). These statistical properties of our model suggested its applicability in the clinic. Conclusion: Our study found that PAS had significant advantage over GEN mental health information regarding information actionability, engagement, and suitability for specific populations with distinct mental health issues. GEN is more suitable for general mental health information acquisition, whereas PAS can effectively engage patients and provide more effective and needed self-care support. The Bayesian machine learning classifier developed provided automatic tools to support decision making in the clinic to identify more actionable resources, effective to support self-care among different populations.

This study aimed to better understand campus mental health culture and student mental health coping strategies, and to identify the mental health needs of students as well as gaps in mental health services within postsecondary education. A videovoice method was used to identify and document health-related issues and advocate for change. Forty-one interviews were conducted with campus stakeholders at five universities. Five themes involving mental health emerged from the campus interviews: the stigma of mental illness; campus culture related to mental health; mental health services available and barriers to mental health services on campus; accommodations for students’ mental health needs; and student mental health coping strategies. A documentary was developed to advocate for better mental health. We conclude that although Canadian campuses are raising awareness about mental health issues, there is not enough mental health infrastructure support on campuses; in particular, accessibility to campus mental health resources needs improvement.

There are many Web resources for health professionals seeking guidance to meet the mental health needs of their clients. Some of those resources are specifically designed for professionals working in schools. School nurses participate in assessment teams and contribute to individual education plans to enable students with mental health needs to achieve academic success. Mental health issues in a school setting involve preventive care, as well as providing and advocating for an environment and policies that promote healthy students and school employees. This article identifies valid and reliable mental health Web resources for school nurses.

People in subsidized housing are likely to suffer from mental health issues. However, little is known about subsidized housing employees’ readiness to address the residents’ mental health needs. This qualitative study explores the perspectives of housing employees on their readiness to assist subsidized housing residents’ mental health needs. A total of 32 subsidized housing employees participated in five focus groups. Thematic analysis revealed four key themes: prevalence of mental health issues, unexpected role as housing employees, multi-level barriers in assisting residents with mental health needs, and the need for mental health support in subsidized housing. Findings highlight the need for integrated care, including social work services in subsidized housing. Social workers may have various potential roles to serve the mental health needs of subsidized housing residents. Also identified was the need for mental health education and training among subsidized housing employees.

Mental health issues have many causes, including the changing and unpredictable elements of the urban physical setting. Thus, this research is crucial to understand the mental health challenges of the urban population in Malaysia. Therefore, the objective of this research is to assess the magnitude of mental health outcomes and associated factors of the urban physical setting among the urban population. A study was carried out at two low-cost flats in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur, with a sample size of 102 respondents. The findings show that there is a correlation between the urban physical environment setting, particularly green spaces with mental disorders (depression, anxiety, and stress).    Keywords: urban planning; environment; mental; health.    eISSN: 2398-4287© 2020. Bangladesh is a densely populated emerging country in South Asia. Since its harsh independence war, it has suffered from repeated floods and other natural and man-inflicted disasters. Internal migration from rural areas to the urban centres has increased crowdedness, pollution and social conflicts. Furthermore, in recent years, the country has absorbed close to a million refugees from Myanmar. These stressors have been associated with an increase in mental disorders and symptoms with which the country is struggling. Lack of resources and a shortage of human capital have weakened the national capacity to efficiently respond to situational stressors or disasters. For assessment of stress-related mental health issues, information available from the Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Mental Health was collected and supplemented by external reports. It is promising that the government's approach of responding to mental health needs only after the occurrence of a crisis has recently been replaced by the concept of total management through primary healthcare. There is a need for development of adequate infrastructure, logistics and workforce support, as well as establishment of multidisciplinary teams of management and clinical services. Collaboration of all related sectors of the government and an overall increase in government funding for mental health are essential.

Background There are high rates of mental health needs in children in the United Kingdom, and parents are increasingly seeking help for their children's needs. However, there is not enough access to child and adolescent mental health services and parents are seeking alternative forms of support and information, often from web-based sources. Mumsnet is the largest web-based parenting forum in the United Kingdom, which includes user-created discussions regarding child mental health. Objective This qualitative investigation aimed to explore the emergent themes within the narratives of posts regarding child mental health on Mumsnet and to extrapolate these themes to understand the purpose of Mumsnet for parents of children and young people with mental health needs. Methods A total of 50 threads from Mumsnet Talk Child Mental Health were extracted. Following the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 41 threads were analyzed thematically using the framework approach, a form of qualitative thematic analysis. Results In total, 28 themes were extracted and organized into 3 domains. These domains were emotional support, emotional expression, and advice and information. The results suggested that parents of children with mental health needs predominantly use Mumsnet to offer and receive emotional support and to suggest general advice, techniques, and resources that could be applied outside of help from professional services. Conclusions This paper discusses the future of health information seeking. Future research is required to establish initiatives in which web-based peer-to-peer support and information can supplement professional services to provide optimum support for parents of children with mental health needs.
