The contact of blood with the artificial extracorporeal circuit causes a systemic inflammatory response due to blood activation. In this study, we compared two different paediatric membrane oxygenators used for extracorporeal circulation: a hollow fibre membrane oxygenator (Dideco Masterflo D-701, n=10), and a flat sheet silicone membrane oxygenator (Avecor Kolobow 800-2A, n=10). Blood compatibility was indicated by measuring complement activation as well as leukocyte and platelet activation. In patients perfused with a flat sheet membrane oxygenator, concentrations of complement split products C3a were significantly increased 30 minutes after the start of bypass (p<0.01), whereas only a mild increase of C3a was found in patients perfused with a hollow fibre membrane oxygenator. Leukocyte and platelet counts dropped uniformly in both groups after the start of bypass mainly due to hemodilution. Activation of leukocytes and platelets identified by both plasma β-glucuronidase and β-thromboglobulin was similar in both groups. Infants perfused with a flat sheet membrane oxygenator received significantly more donor blood than those perfused with a hollow fibre oxygenator (p<0.05). These results indicate that when used during paediatric cardiopulmonary bypass, a flat sheet membrane oxygenator has a higher complement activity than a hollow fibre membrane oxygenator, which is probably due to the relatively larger blood-surface contacting area of the oxygenator.

Sugar is released during biomass hydrolysis together with unwanted inhibitory compounds such as acetic acid, furfural and hydromethylfurfural. The extraction of particular sugar prior to fermentation process is needed in order to increase the yield of biofuel generated from biomass resources. In the current study, glucose was extracted from the aqueous solution using supported liquid membrane (SLM) system. Polyethersulfone (PES) flat sheet membrane support was fabricated using 15 wt.% PES, 42.5 wt.% DMAc and 42.5 wt.% PEG 200. Liquid membrane was formulated using 2-ethyl hexanol and methyl cholate as solvent and carrier, respectively. The effect of several parameters involved in SLM system such as type of diluent and flowrate of feed and stripping phase on the extraction performance of glucose were studied. About 52.77% of glucose was successfully extracted from aqueous solution using SLM system with 0.01M of methyl cholate in 2-ethyl hexanol. Using simulated biomass hydrolysate solution, almost 54.55% of glucose and 51.08% of xylose were successfully extracted using the SLM system.

The objective of this study was to investigate the potential process of the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from flue gases by using developed membrane gas absorption system. The experiments were performed in membrane gas absorption system consisted 0.45 μm pore size microporous polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) flat sheet membrane. Diethanolamine (DEA) solution was employed as the liquid absorbent. The operating parameters such as the gas and liquid flow rate were setup at 100 cm3/min and 25 cm3/min and liquid absorbent was at room temperature. The effect of DEA concentration was studied with variation in range 1 M to 5 M. In addition, the experiments were carried out with 20%, 40% and 100% gas ratio CO2 to N2. The results show that hydrophobic polymeric membranes such as PVDF can be efficiently used for gas absorption with optimized concentration of DEA.
