Objective: We aimed to investigate the free radical scavenging, antioxidant and hepatoprotective potential of M. concanensis Nimmo leaves.Methods: Free radical scavenging activity was evaluated by employing various accepted in vitro­ systems, such as 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), hydroxyl (OH) and nitric oxide (NO) radical. Antioxidant potential of M. concanensis Nimmo extract was assessed against H2O2 in goat liver by determination of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glucose-6-phosphatase dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH), total reduced glutathione (GSH), vitamin C, vitamin E activity, and lipid peroxidation (LPO).Results: Results showed that the amount of plant extract of M. concanensis Nimmo required to scavenge 50% of the DPPH radicals was 401.80 μg/ml, ABTS radical was 353.14 μg/ml, OH radical was 433.71 μg/ml and NO radical was 371.24 μg/ml. Also, the pre-treatment of ethanolic extract of M. concanensis Nimmo leaves in goat liver showed a significant protection against H2O2 induced oxidative stress by retaining of antioxidants of SOD (4.76±0.25), CAT (26.81±0.25), GPx (6.41±0.34), GST (2.31±0.10), G-6-PDH (0.84±0.02), GSH (37.30±1.12), vitamin C (3.01±0.07), vitamin E (14.43±0.45) within normal range.Conclusion: In conclusion, promising free radical scavenging, the antioxidant activity of M. concanensis Nimmo leaves can be able to treat various diseases caused by free radicals.

Abstract We evaluated free radical scavenging activity of the water, methanol and chloroform ex­tracts of propolis in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical and xanthine-xanthine oxidase (XOD) generated superoxide anion assay systems. The free radical scavenging activity guided fractionation and chemical analysis led to the isolation of a new compound, propol {3-[4-hydroxy-3-(3-oxo-but-1-enyl)-phenyl]-acrylic acid) from the water extract, which was more potent than most common antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E (α-tocopherol) in these assay systems.

This study evaluated the free radical scavenging activity in ethanolic extracts from 20 accessions of Curcuma aeruginosa. The radical scavenging activity of the extract accessions was investigated with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. IC50 values for DPPH radical scavenging activity ranged from 89.81 to 505.65 µg mL-1. Based on IC50 values, twenty accessions of C. aeruginosa can be divided into three groups: strong (two accessions); moderate (seventeen accessions); and low (one accession) of DPPH scavenger. Sukoharjo (SH) and Muara Bungo (MB) showed promising accessions for antioxidant potential, thus these accessions important to selection for future breeding program in pharmaceutical products.

The present study attempts to find naturally-occurring antioxidants of fruit-based which give efficacy by additive activities. Citrus paradisi, known as Grape fruit contains significant bioactive components such as Naringin. The present study examines the free radical scavenging activity of ethanolic extract of Citrus paradisi and Naringin. The study was carried out with different radical scavenging assays like hydroxyl, DPPH, hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide, super oxide. Citrus paradisi extracts showed lower radical scavenging activities in assays such as DPPH, superoxide and hydroxyl when compared with Naringin. Naringin showed the higher radical scavenging effect with nitric oxide, and hydrogen peroxide in comparison with citrus paradisi extract. However, both were analysed by using ascorbic acid as standard. The current study gives evidence that both showed potential free radical scavenging activity.

Ziziphus rugosa Lam. belongs to the family Rhamnaceae and is found chiefly in deciduous and semi evergreen forest of Western Ghats. The present research was undertaken to establish in vitro antioxidant and in vivo hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic extract of Z.rugosa Lam. leaves. The powdered leaves of Z. rugosa were extracted with ethanol and preliminary phytochemical screening was performed for the presence of various phytoconstituents. DPPH assay and β-glucuronidase inhibition assay were selected for the free radical scavenging activity. For the assessment of hepatoprotective activity, alcohol and CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity model were used. The phytochemical analysis of ethanolic extract showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins and flavonoids. The extract exhibited concentration dependent radical scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 61.88 μg/ml and β –glucoronidase inhibition activity with an IC50 value of 70.61 μg/ml. It was speculated that the Z. rugosa Lam. ethanolic extract shows dosedependent hepatoprotective activity which is equivalent with the standard drug Silymarin. The inhibition of free radicals or free radical scavenging activity is significant in the protection against CCl4 and alcohol induced hepatopathy. Hence, it is likely that the antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract of Z. rugosa Lam. might contribute to the hepatoprotective action.

ABSTRACTSolanum nigrum is a paramount in medicinal perspective and belongs to family Solanacea. From different parts of the plant significant pharmacological and biological activities have been reported previously.  In the present study, the ethanolic extract of leaves was investigated for phytochemical analysis, vitamin and mineral content. Phytochemical analysis of the leaves revealed the presence of phenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, tannins, phytosterols and triterpenoides. The leaves extract was found to contain appreciable amounts of flavonoids and phenols. The extract showed the presence of vitamins such as ascorbic acid, folic acid, and niacinamide. It has been found that the leaves of Solanum nigrum is rich in minerals like copper, magnesium, manganese, vanadium, chromium, calcium, zinc, sodium, and potassium. The antioxidant (free radical scavenging) activity of the extract was determined against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) ABTS, Nitric oxide(NO) and Superoxide Scavenging assays. Solanum nigrum leaves extract was found to be antioxidant in nature which is evident from DPPH, ABTS, NO, Superoxide radical scavenging assays. These findings suggest that Solanum nigrum possess biologically important phytoconstituents, significant amounts of vitamins and minerals. IN addition, S. nigrum leaves extract exert free radical scavenging potential in vitro.Key words: Medicinal plants; Solanum nigrum leaves; phytoconstiuents;Antioxidant.
