The occurrence of Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán, Mischocyttarus ignotus Zikán, Mischocyttarus nomurae Richards and Mischocyttarus paraguayensis Zikán for the state of Minas Gerais and Mischocyttarus garbei Zikán for the state of Rio de Janeiro are registered for the first time, collected through active search and attractive traps. Novos Registros de Vespas Sociais (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) em Floresta Estacional Semidecidual Montana e Mata Seca em Minas Gerais e na Mata Atlântica no Estado do Rio de Janeiro Resumo. Neste trabalho é registrado pela primeira vez a ocorrência de Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán, Mischocyttarus ignotus Zikán, Mischocyttarus nomurae Richards e Mischocyttarus paraguayensis Zikán para o estado de Minas Gerais e Mischocyttarus garbei Zikán para o estado do Rio de Janeiro coletadas por meio de busca ativa e armadilhas atrativas.

We describe a new species of Oxyepoecus Santschi, 1926, Oxyepoecus regularis sp. nov., based on workers and a gyne collected in "Caatinga Arbórea" (Arboreal Shrubland) in Milagres and "Mata Seca" (Dry Forest) in Boa Vista do Tupim, both in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The gyne of Oxyepoecus browni Albuquerque & Brandão, 2004, collected in the same leaf litter ant survey, is also described. In addition, we present new records for Oxyepoecus species in Northeastern Brazil.

Otatea, with 12 described species, is the second most diverse genus in the subtribe Guaduinae. Eleven species of Otatea occur in Mexico, of which 10 are endemic. The Mexican Otatea species grow in tropical dry forest, the ecotone between tropical dry forest and oak forest, cloud forest, humid oak-pine forest, and xerophilous scrubs. Here, we describe the synflorescence and flowers of Otatea nayeeri and O. transvolcanica, based on newly collected specimens and review of existing herbarium material. We present a key based on the flowering characters of the Mexican Otatea species, and provide expanded morphological descriptions and illustrations of O. nayeeri and O. transvolcanica. Otatea nayeeri and O. transvolcanica do not exhibit the gregarious monocarpic flowering pattern that has been recorded for other Otatea species. A flowering individual of O. transvolcanica was observed being visited by a Lasioglossum (Dialictus) sp. (Halictidae) bee. This is the first record for Otatea being visited by bees. The geographical distribution of O. nayeeri is extended northwards to the state of Durango in Mexico.

In this paper we revise the species of Sicarius (Araneae: Sicariidae) from the Brazilian Caatinga, the largest tropical dry forest nucleus in the world. We redescribe, designate a neotype and provide new records for Sicarius tropicus (Mello- Leitão, 1936), the only species previously known from the region, and describe three new species: S. cariri n. sp., S. diadorim n. sp. and S. ornatus n. sp. We report high intraspecific variation in the genitalic morphology of these species, especially in females. We also provide anecdotal observations on natural history and behavior of these species, including diet, mating behavior and clutch size. We include an identification key for Brazilian Caatinga species of Sicarius.

In Brazil, most studies of the Culicidae family are concentrated in rainforest regions. As such, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the diversity of Culicidae in regions with different climatic and vegetational characteristics. The aim of this study was to compile an inventory of Culicidae in protected areas of the semi-arid region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in order to better understand the diversity of the family within this region. The study was conducted across four protected areas in the northern region of the state, in tropical dry forest (TDF) fragments. Sampling methods included Shannon trap and CDC light trap, as well as active collection. A total of 11,219 mosquito specimens were collected between August 2008 and July 2012, belonging to 11 genera and 45 species; 15 new records for the state of Minas Gerais were registered, as well as 26 new records for semi-arid regions within the state. The high number of new Culicidae records in this region demonstrates the importance of inventory studies for increasing the knowledge of culicid biodiversity in Minas Gerais, and in particular within semi-arid regions of the state.

Based on the review of floristic and taxonomic literature, as well as on the examination of specimens housed at the herbaria of the Centro Regional del Bajío (IEB) and the Instituto de Biología (MEXU), we recorded 845 species, 352 genera and 100 families of trees for the state of Michoacán, Mexico. The largest numbers of species per family were recorded for Asteraceae (82), Fabaceae (74), Mimosaceae (67), Caesalpiniaceae (39) and Burseraceae (38), while at the genus level Bursera (37), Quercus (35), Lonchocarpus (19), Senna (18), and Acacia (16) are the most speciose. The genus Beiselia (Burseraceae) and 14 species (1.8 %) are strict endemics to the state. A total of 28 families (28%) and 210 genera (60%) are represented in the state only by one tree species each. The most important vegetation types according to their species richness are tropical deciduous forest (593, 70.2%), coniferous forest (336, 39.8%) and oak forest (332, 39.3%). A high proportion (69.9%) of Michoacán’s tree species is located in 2-4 vegetation types; 173 species (21.5%) have been found just in one type, mainly in the tropical dry forest (87 species, 10.3%). The floristic richness of Michoacán is largely explained by its complex geologic history, its rugged physiography, its diverse climate, and its multiple vegetation types, as well as by its location at the confluence of the Holartic and Neotropical floristic kingdoms. Counties and species on which to focus conservation efforts for trees in the state are pinponted.

Resumen: Antecedentes y Objetivos: Actualmente, se reconocen 21 especies adscritas al género Rhytidhysteron. En México sólo se ha reportado Rhytidhysteron rufulum. El género se caracteriza por sus histerotecios naviculares a apoteciales, el borde es estriado o liso; los colores del epitecio varían de anaranjado-rojizo, amarillo, verde a negros y las ascosporas presentan tres septos longitudinales. El objetivo del presente estudio es realizar una revisión taxonómica del género Rhytidhysteron en México, basada en caracteres macro y micromorfológicos.Métodos: Se realizaron diez exploraciones entre 2017 y 2019 en diversas regiones de México. Además, se revisaron los especímenes depositados en la colección de hongos del herbario ENCB. Los ejemplares fueron estudiados, descritos y determinados de acuerdo con las técnicas tradicionales en micología. Resultados clave: Se revisaron 381 especímenes pertenecientes al género Rhytidhysteron, de los cuales se determinaron cuatro especies: Rhytidhysteron neohysterinum, una nueva especie para la ciencia, R. neorufulum y R. thailandicum que son nuevos registros para el país, y R. rufulum previamente citado.Conclusiones: El género Rhytidhysteron tiene una alta diversidad de especies en México. La mayoría de los especímenes se han encontrado sobre ramas en descomposición, principalmente en géneros de la familia Fabaceae en bosque tropical caducifolio, lo que podría sugerir que este grupo de plantas representa el microhábitat al que las especies de Rhytidhysteron se han adaptado.Palabras clave: distribución, histerotecio, Hysteriales, nueva especie, taxonomía. Abstract:  Background and Aims: Currently, 21 species associated with the genus Rhytidhysteron are recognized. In Mexico, only Rhytidhysteron rufulum has been reported. The genus is characterized by its navicular to apotecial histerothecia, the margin is striate or smooth; the colours of the epithecium vary from orange-reddish, yellow, green to black and its ascospores present three longitudinal septa. The objective of this study is to carry out a taxonomic review of the genus Rhytidhysteron in Mexico, based on macro- and micromorphological characters.Methods: Ten exploration trips were realized between 2017 to 2019 in several regions of Mexico. In addition, the specimens deposited in the fungus collection of the ENCB herbarium were reviewed. The specimens were studied, described and determined according to traditional mycological techniques.Key results: 381 specimens belonging to the genus Rhytidhysteron were reviewed, of which four species were determined: R. neohysterinum, a new species for science, R. neorufulum and R. thailandicum, new records for the country, and the previously cited R. rufulum.Conclusions: The genus Rhytidhysteron has a high diversity of species in Mexico. Most specimens have been found on decomposing branches, mainly of genera of the Fabaceae family in tropical dry forest, which suggest that this group of plants represent the microhabitat to which Rhytidhysteron species have best adapted.Key words: distribution, Hysteriales, hysterothecium, new species, taxonomy.

Currently, the tropical dry forest found on rock formations originating from volcanic activity are the best preserved, but also the least studied in the State of Veracruz, Mexico. We recorded 104 families comprising 394 genera and 666 species and subspecies of vascular plants. These latter taxa were classified in the following growth form categories: 88 trees, 126 shrubs, 342 herbs, 80 vines and 30 epiphytes. The richest families, considering the recorded species, were Fabaceae, Poaceae, Asteraceae and Euphorbiaceae. The presence of a rich succulent component in the tropical dry forest flora was noticeable. It is conformed by 204 species and subspecies, corresponding to 30.4% of the total for such vascular taxa recorded in the study area. The highest ichness of succulent species was found in the most diverse families, such as Euphorbiaceae, Orchidaceae, Cactaceae, and Bromeliaceae.

Background and Aims: Hymenochaete is the genus with the highest number of species of the family Hymenochaetaceae in Mexico; 25 species have been described. It is characterized by its mainly resupinate basidiome, although it may be pileate and stipitate, of brown colors, with presence of setae and xanthocroid reaction. The objective of this study is to describe a new species of Hymenochaete.Methods: The fresh material was studied and described macro and micromorphologically, using a stereoscopic and optical microscope, taking photos in situ. Vouchers of the herbaria ENCB y FCME were studied, and specialized literature was reviewed for its description.Key results: Hymenochaete liliae sp. nov. is characterized by a resupinate, adnate, fleshy basidiome, smooth hymenophore, with numerous setae, determinate margin, abrupt, with monomitic hyphal system, simple septae; abundant subfusiform setae in the hymenium, 69-80 × 6-8 µm, acute, with crystals; and ellipsoid basidiospores, thin-walled, 5-8 × 2-3 µm. Although it resembles H. rhabarbarina, it can be differentiated by setae covered with crystals and spores of 4.8-6 × 2.3-3.3 µm. It could also be confused with H. minuscula due to its basidiome color; however, the setae are smaller (40-60 µm), as well as the basidia (15-20 µm). It can be separated from H. cinnamomea because it does not present a stratose basidiome; setae with crystals, 69-80 × 6-8 µm; basidiospores 5-8 × 2-3 µm, ellipsoidal.Conclusions: Hymenochaete liliae is proposed as a new species, which is distributed in the tropical dry forest of the state of Oaxaca, and until now only reported from the type locality.

Abstract The Chamela Biological Station (ChBS) is located in the Pacific Coast of Mexico in the State of Jalisco. This represents one of the core areas of the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve, characterized by one of the most threatened ecosystems, the tropical dry forest. Although accumulated knowledge of biological diversity, only few studies have been focused on ectoparasites or ectodytes associated with mammals, only 23 arthropod taxa had been recorded. In order to increase knowledge about arthropods associated with Mexican mammals, the objective of this work was to record the richness of arthropods (mites, ticks, lice, and fleas) associated with small and medium-sized mammals in the ChBS. A total of 81 hosts belonging to four orders, six families and nine species were captured. From these hosts, 4,946 arthropods were recovered: 4,007 mites, 673 ticks, 230 lice, and 36 fleas. Among medium-sized mammals, Nasua narica (L.) and Didelphis virginiana Kerr showed the highest levels of richness, with six arthropod taxa; among rodents, Heteromys pictus (Thomas) had the highest number of associated species (five). Within the 22 arthropod taxa registered in the present work, 12 represent new records for the reserve, and 3 represent new records for Mexico. With this study, the arthropod fauna associated with mammals in the ChBS has been raised to 38 taxa. In terms of biological conservation, knowledge of the species that inhabit natural reserves must be a priority, since this represents the baseline for species protected, not only in Mexico but around the world.
