I examined the relationship between employees' psychological empowerment and their proactive behavior, and explored the mediating role of self-efficacy in this relationship. Using structural equation modeling, I conducted an empirical test based on survey data obtained from 337 Master of Business Administration students across 4 universities in South China. The results showed that psychological empowerment and self-efficacy led to proactive behavior. In addition, self-efficacy partially mediated the relationship between psychological empowerment and proactive behavior. These findings highlight the importance of workplace managers fostering employees' psychological empowerment and self-efficacy to promote proactive employee behavior.

This research investigated the mediating role of psychological safety in the relationship between self-sacrificial leadership and employee voice. We used a two-wave survey to collect data from a sample of 329 Master of Business Administration students at two universities in North China. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results show that self-sacrificial leadership had a direct positive effect on employee voice, and psychological safety partially mediated this relationship. Our findings expand the literature on the self-sacrificial leadership–employee voice link, and highlight the importance of the role of psychological safety. This study has practical implications for managers seeking to develop a self-sacrificial leadership style to encourage employees to express constructive opinions about workrelated issues.

Zhongyong, as a typical Confucian thinking model, is related to employees' voice behavior. In this research we explored the relationship between Zhongyong thinking and employees' voice behavior, and examined the mediating effect of psychological safety in this relationship. Survey data were collected from 218 part-time Master of Business Administration students from two Chinese universities. The structural equation modeling results demonstrate that Zhongyong thinking was positively related to psychological safety, and that psychological safety was positively related to voice behavior. Further, psychological safety mediated the Zhongyong thinking–voice behavior relationship. These results suggest that organizations can encourage voice behavior by enhancing employees' Zhongyong thinking and by boosting their perception of psychological safety in the workplace.

PurposeThis study aims to explore the relationship between work–life balance and employee retention by examining the mediating role of psychological empowerment among software firms based in India.Design/methodology/approachThe study collected 283 responses by using a structured questionnaire and interview method. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to validate the hypothesized research model for examining the consistency and sturdiness of the study variables by applying AMOS 20.FindingsThe result reveals that psychological empowerment partially mediates the relationship between work–life balance and the retention of professionals. This indicates that a high degree of psychological empowerment strengthens the relations between work–life balance and the retention of professionals.Research limitations/implicationsThe research outlined a best-fit model of psychological empowerment as a partial mediator among work–life balance and the retention of professionals. The study presents a set of sensible and practical aspects where work–life balance and retention of professionals can aid in developing and generating commitment to the organization which could offer new insights for software professionals, managers and practitioners.Originality/valueThis study emphasized that psychological empowerment helps in enhancing dedication, loyalty, integrity, allegiance and trustworthiness among employees, thus playing a role between work–life balance and the retention of professionals.

Previous research has revealed the importance of leadership in promoting employee creativity. However, the mechanism by which selfsacrificial leadership facilitates employee creativity is not well understood. We proposed a model explaining why self-sacrificial leadership may enhance employee creativity, which we tested with data from 206 part-time Master of Business Administration students and their supervisors at two Chinese universities. Results of structural equation modeling analysis show that self-sacrificial leadership had a positive relationship with employee creativity, both directly and also indirectly through the mediator of psychological safety. These findings shed light on how self-sacrificial leadership helps to enhance employee creativity. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

We examined how occupational self-efficacy is related to organizational commitment, and how it indirectly influences work engagement. Participants were 328 part-time Master of Business Administration students in China. We used structural equation modeling and chi-square difference tests to analyze the data and assess the proposed mediating effect. Results showed that occupational self-efficacy had a direct effect on organizational commitment and an indirect effect on work engagement through the mediator of organizational commitment. Our findings extend previous results and show that occupational self-efficacy can be used to predict work engagement.

Knowledge about the role of empathy, emotional self-efficacy, and loneliness on early adolescents’ depressive symptoms is scarce. The main aims of the study were to investigate the following: (a) the role of empathy and emotional self-efficacy (additive and interactive) on loneliness and depressive symptoms, taking into account gender differences and (b) the possible mediating role of loneliness in the relationship between emotional predictors and depressive symptoms. Three hundred forty-eight Italian early adolescents (48% girls; mean age, 13; SD = 0.3) completed an anonymous self-report questionnaire at two time points (1 year apart). Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyze data. Results indicated the following: (a) high empathy and low emotional self-efficacy were related to higher subsequent loneliness and depressive symptoms; (b) emotional self-efficacy moderated the relationship between empathy and loneliness and, only for girls, between empathy and depressive symptoms; (c) no mediation role of loneliness between emotional predictors (empathy and emotional self-efficacy) and depressive symptoms was found. Results are discussed in relation to preventive interventions targeting early adolescents.

Knowledge sharing (KS) is often considered central to encouraging innovative work behaviour (IWB). We concentrate specifically on the relationship between KS and IWB through the mediating role of psychological empowerment (PE). A stratified sampling method was employed for three organisations operating in the services sector. We obtained 340 completed survey returns from employees. Based on a framework informed by social exchange theory (SET), structural equation modeling (SEM) was implemented to examine the research model and the mediation effect. The main finding is a significant positive relationship between KS and PE from one side and PE and IWB from the other. In addition, there is a significant relationship between KS and IWB. It is concluded that PE partially mediates the relationship between KS and IWB. We recommend that researchers and practitioners further investigate the contribution of KS to promoting PE and IWB that enhance organisational performance.

The study examined the association between transformational leadership and organizational identification of employees. The relationship between transformational leadership and psychological empowerment and the possible mediating role of psychological empowerment in the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational identification of employees was also studied. A hypothesized model was developed to examine the relationship between the constructs. Sample for the study comprised 199 employees from the IT sector. Instruments used were Multi-factor Leadership Questionnaire, Smidts et al.’s (2001) Organizational Identification Questionnaire and Spreitzer’s (1995) Psychological Empowerment Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS and structural equation modeling in AMOS. It was indicated that transformational leadership had positive and significant impact on organizational identification as well as psychological empowerment of employees. Psychological empowerment acting as a mediator between these two constructs was established. It was found that the developed model would pave way for more attention toward psychological empowerment among leaders and employees in organization.

Zhongyong thinking is the Confucian doctrine of the mean; zhong means equilibrium and yong means harmoniousness, so that Zhongyong thinking represents maintaining balance and harmony. I examined the mediating effect of knowledge sharing in the relationship between Zhongyong thinking and employee creativity in a Chinese context. I collected 285 paired surveys from part-time Master of Business Administration students who self-rated their Zhongyong thinking and knowledge sharing in their workplace, and their supervisors who rated their creativity. Results of structural equation modeling analysis reveal that Zhongyong thinking had a positive indirect relationship with employee creativity through the mediator of knowledge sharing. These findings shed light on the ways in which Zhongyong thinking helps to enhance employee creativity. Managers of organizations should pay attention to improving employees' Zhongyong thinking and facilitating employees' knowledge sharing. Study limitations and suggestions for future research directions are discussed.

This study examines the role of supporting leadership and self-efficacy in the development of work engagement. We evaluate the mediating role of self-efficacy between leadership and work engagement in a sample of 271 employees from a Public Administration (City Hall). Results from the Structural Equation Modeling Analysis reveal that self-efficacy mediates the relationship between leadership and work engagement. The perception of having supporting leaders relates significantly with employees’ self-efficacy, which in turns, positively relates to work engagement.
