Abstract In the UAE, an Operator needed to perform a completion change out in a gas well, where the existing completion has been installed for over 30 years. Logging operations had revealed several leaks point in the production tubing due to corrosion. To rectify the situation, a Hydraulic Workover (HWO) Unit was proposed integrating a punch ram in the Blowout Preventer (BOP) Configuration to manage the bleed off of potential pressure trapped between the isolated sections of the completion at surface. This document describes how the highly corroded completion tubing with eleven retrievable plugs set in a live gas well was recovered. The HWO Unit was modified so that one of the cavities in the BOP stack was dressed with customized punch rams for five inch pipe, with the objective of allowing control of any potential leaks due to plug failure. The pressure relief operation could then be completed by means of punching the tubing in the controlled environment that a Stripping BOP Stack provides. This paper compiles the details of the BOP configuration and operating procedures to recover the completion by stripping out of the well and operating the punch rams with the snubbing unit. This includes the pre-job preparation required for a successful operation and the overall design with where to locate the collars and plugs for an accurate punch, and how to confirm that the plugs are holding the pressure to continue retrieving the next completion section. In the end, a safe operation was completed with zero incidents or down time allowing the intervention to continue to the next stage of recompleting the well and putting it back to production. The customer was able to get the well back to production with an alternative solution to what was initially considered, representing a significant cost and time saving.

Effective planning, coordination, and scheduling of the maintenance function can be, and for many years was, accomplished without computer support. However, in these days of high technology and rapid, economical data communication, job preparation is accomplished far more efficiently with the support of a sound maintenance management information system. Fast, flexible access to reliable, current, and comprehensive information is vital if planners and managers are to control the maintenance function on the basis of knowledge rather than intuition. The paper presents a maintenance information management system designed for the needs of the healthcare company. Due to its universality, the system can read information from different sources, appropriately process, interpret and deliver it to the right people in the most appropriate manner.

JOBLINKS demonstration projects tested the means of providing transportation services to disadvantaged individuals, particularly welfare recipients trying to make the transition to employment and self-sufficiency. In 1995–1996, 10 demonstration projects were funded in 6 states. After each project an independent assessment yielded the following findings: ( a) Transportation made a difference in enabling disadvantaged people to obtain work. In several demonstration projects, the transportation services provided through JOBLINKS enabled individuals to get a job or to increase work to a full-time basis. ( b) Transportation solutions were most effective in the presence of three key factors: availability of jobs in the local labor market at shift times that could be served by available drivers and vehicles, access to job-ready workers with transportation barriers who would be suited for these jobs, and coordination among transportation providers, human services agencies, and employers. In the absence of these factors, transportation linkages played an important role in getting disadvantaged populations to job preparation services. Many of the JOBLINKS projects concentrated on and were very successful at carrying those who were not job ready to educational institutions, job-training providers, and job club sites. ( c) Transportation is a necessary component in the package of services needed to implement welfare-to-work programs. Welfare-to-work policy emphasizes getting people into work environments. There are serious implications of this policy for both welfare agencies and transportation providers. Future efforts to meet the transportation needs of people who are struggling to become independent of welfare should focus on innovative ways to get them to workplaces.

Purpose A research project exploring emerging student needs identified two potentially disruptive shifts for the future of higher education: a shift in balance of power from institutions toward the students and a shift in the purpose of higher education away from job preparation. The research suggests that current drivers are eventually moving toward these shifts but that several “accelerators” may hasten their arrival. The paper aims to describe the process for identifying the emerging needs, the potentially disruptive shifts and key implications for higher education. Design/methodology/approach A modified version of the University of Houston’s “Framework Foresight” method was used to identify the emerging needs, the disruptive shifts and their implications. Findings Emerging student needs suggest two potential disruptive shifts for higher education: shift in balance of power from institutions toward the students and shift in the purpose of higher education away from job preparation. Practical implications Current institutions of higher education may need to reconsider their purpose, mission and value proposition in light of these disruptive shifts. Social implications Beyond just higher education, there is a need for a larger society-wide dialogue about the emerging future and how to best prepare students for it. Originality/value This extensive research carried out from the student perspective suggests disruptive shifts ahead relating to the purpose and future of higher education.
