Abstract The 2019 GSA Fellows Symposium includes GSA members who were recently granted GSA Fellow status. They represent each of the GSA sections: Biological Sciences (BS), Health Sciences (HS), Behavioral & Social Sciences (BSS), Social Research, Policy & Practice (SRPP), and the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE). The theme of the 2019 GSA Fellows Symposium is focusing on the power of networks and will highlight the importance of neuroendocrine networks (Christian Sell), the role of social support for refugees in Canada (Esme Fuller-Thomson), the importance of professional partnerships to promote health (Heather Young), aging-friendly communities (Emily Greenfield), and the role of networks in teaching gerontology (Tina Kruger). The importance of networks across disciplinary boundaries will be discussed.


While the utility of concept mapping has been widely reported in primary and secondary educational contexts, its application in the health sciences in higher education has been less frequently noted. Two case studies of the application of concept mapping in undergraduate and postgraduate health sciences are detailed in this paper. The case in undergraduate dental education examines the role of concept mapping in supporting problem-based learning and explores how explicit induction into the principles and practices of CM has add-on benefits to learning in an inquiry-based curriculum. The case in postgraduate medical education describes the utility of concept mapping in an online inquiry-based module design. Specific attention is given to applications of CMapTools™ software to support the implementation of Novakian concept mapping in both inquiry-based curricular contexts.

The process of building the European Higher Education Area has fostered the internationalization of higher education and placed special emphasis on the prominent role of learning foreign languages. The implementation of the new degrees has included the so-called language requirement that must be taken into account when developing new teaching materials for the grades. In this paper we analyse various methodological and educational aspects in the six textbooks that were used to teach English for Health Sciences, ten optional subjects of the former Degree in Medicine. The ultimate goal of the analysis of the aforementioned books is to develop a taxonomic model that serves for the creation of supporting materials to be used in the optional subject of the new Degree in Medicine at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

A majority of the black community of Dullstroom-Emnotweni in the Mpumalanga highveld in the east of South Africa trace their descent back to the southern Ndebele of the so-called ‘Mapoch Gronden’, who lost their land in the 1880s to become farm workers on their own land. A hundred years later, in 1980, descendants of the ‘Mapoggers’ settled in the newly built ‘township’ of Dullstroom, called Sakhelwe, finding jobs on the railways or as domestic workers. Oral interviews with the inhabitants of Sakhelwe – a name eventually abandoned in favour of Dullstroom- Emnotweni – testify to histories of transition from landowner to farmworker to unskilled labourer. The stories also highlight cultural conflicts between people of Ndebele, Pedi and Swazi descent and the influence of decades of subordination on local identities. Research projects conducted in this and the wider area of the eMakhazeni Local Municipality reveal the struggle to maintain religious, gender and youth identities in the face of competing political interests. Service delivery, higher education, space for women and the role of faith-based organisations in particular seem to be sites of contestation. Churches and their role in development and transformation, where they compete with political parties and state institutions, are the special focus of this study. They attempt to remain free from party politics, but are nevertheless co-opted into contra-culturing the lack of service delivery, poor standards of higher education and inadequate space for women, which are outside their traditional role of sustaining an oppressed community.

The article outlines the conceptual framework for adapting Ukrainian higher education to the Standards and Recommendations for Quality Assurance in the European higher education area. The role of the Bologna Declaration in ensuring the quality of higher education in Europe has been explained. The conceptual foundations and the essence of standards and recommendations on quality assurance in the European higher education area have been defined. The Ukrainian realities of the adaptation of higher education of Ukraine to the educational European standards of quality have been characterized.
