Malaysia’s research and development landscape has grown tremendously over the last decade. The growth of scholarly output in Malaysia has also risen significantly compared to countries such as China, Singapore and Australia. Malaysia has made it a target that research output and quality will increase through an expenditure of 1.3% of the GDP allocated to Research and Development (R&D). Thus far, Malaysia has achieved phenomenal growth within the research sector, with a four-fold increase in the number of citations and has generated approximately RM1.25 billion through 11% yearly growth in the number of patents from Malaysian Universities. This case study aims to provide, firstly, an overview of research governance in Malaysia, and secondly, a discussion of research governance practices at Universiti Malaya (UM). Data is obtained from the 11th Malaysian Plan (2016-2020) and linked to the Malaysian Transformation Program. The Malaysian Education Blueprint for Higher Education (2015-2025) launched in 2015 also outlined a comprehensive transformation for research in higher education programmes. In addition, other published documents on research governance practices by agencies providing research funding were also reviewed. This case study highlights best practices in research management and governance to strengthen and further enhance the current research management and governance in support of the Malaysian government’s initiative towards achieving a high-income nation status.

Understanding the need to strengthen the research component in the activities of domestic universities for the full integration of Ukraine into the European Higher Education Area and the European Research Area encourages the search for modern research management mechanisms. An analysis of the experience of research management in the universities of the United Kingdom - one of the leading countries of higher education in accordance with international ratings - suggests that an effective research management mechanism is research governance as part of a university governance system. Despite the fact that, according to European experts, university governance has a direct impact on the results of research to date in national educational science, there is still no holistic analysis of the mechanisms of research governance in the countries of higher education leaders in the domestic educational science. The purpose of the article is to identify trends in research management in universities based on the analysis of UK experience. To achieve this goal, methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, systematization of scientific and Internet sources were used, which enabled to reveal the peculiarities of research management in the universities of the United Kingdom. The application of the generalization method made it possible to draw conclusions about the results of the study. The article substantiates the relevance of the modernization of research management systems in domestic universities. The experience of research management through the development and use of the framework for research governance in the United Kingdom universities has been analyzed. The composition and description of the elements of the framework of research governance are analyzed, their generalized characteristics are presented. Main features of the use of the framework for research governance in universities in the United Kingdom are characterized, a list of key documents and key actors (participants) of research governance is given.

More educators use serious games (e.g., games where the primary objective is learning rather than enjoyment) to enhance learning due to benefits such as improved understanding and engagement. However, using serious games within project management education is not well understood. The aim of this research is to investigate project management serious games in higher education: i) determine the extent of gamification in PMI-accredited project management programs, and ii) survey university students about their experiences playing project management serious games. Two separate mixed-method studies reveal insights about serious games in higher education and where innovations may be leveraged. Traditional statistics were used to analyze quantitative data, and coding was used to analyze the qualitative data. The results from a global survey of ten PMI-accredited university programs suggest that serious games are embryonic but promising. A case study at one university reveals that students enjoy learning through games but caution against using games to formally assess students’ learning. The paper concludes with recommendations for further research and development.

One of the challenges faced by the domestic universities is to increase their competitiveness in the European and global space of higher education. In view of the fact that the results of scientific work are a key indicator for the entry of universities into the world rankings, the urgent task in the system of higher education in Ukraine is to create conditions for high-quality research in universities. The solution of the problem of improving the quality of research in domestic universities is actualizing the problem of developing and using new research management mechanisms, which includes, inter alia, an analysis of the best practices of leading European and world universities. Taking into consideration the sustained leadership of the UK universities in the European and world higher education spaces, it is worth noticing an analysis of the country's experience in implementing research governance in universities, in particular, the analysis of key documents used by universities for effective research management. The purpose of the article is to analyze the experience of research governance in universities in the UK for the implementation of best practices in the higher education system of Ukraine. To achieve the goal, methods of analyzing, synthesizing, comparing, systematizing scientific and Internet sources, which enabled them to consider key documents for the implementation of research governance in universities in the UK, were used. The application of the generalization method made it possible to draw conclusions about the results of the study. The article substantiates the relevance of the analysis of Britain's experience in providing research governance conditions conducive to perfect research. The key documents of the European and national levels used in the development of the University Research Framework Frameworks have been analyzed, and their main points are outlined: criteria for assessing the excellence of research, the principles and standards of research, and the requirements for researchers at the universities.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) in South Africa are facing challenges arising as a result of the shift from traditional teaching activities to a combination of research and teaching. Increasing emphasis on research, an integral part of this transformation of higher education, has required HEIs to develop and implement capacity development strategies to enable those new to research to engage in research output; and mentorship is a strategy that is enjoying increasing popularity. This article explores the challenges faced in the implementation of a formal research mentorship programme (REMP), using the University of Johannesburg as a case study. A quantitative approach was adopted to obtain the perceptions of academic staff of REMP as a strategy for building research capacity. The findings reveal that whilst the REMP is strongly favoured by academics as a means of guiding novice researchers, key factors need to be addressed to ensure its success. This article examines the challenges for both mentors and mentees and suggests actions to help mentorship programmes make sustainable contributions to the development of research capacity.

Ukraine's accession to the Bologna Process and accession to the European Higher Education Area and the European Research Area leads to an increase in the institutional capacity of domestic higher education institutions, which implies, in particular, improved quality of research. This, in turn, actualizes the change in the paradigm of university research management. Following the recommendations of the Lisbon Summit (2000), universities need to move from traditional governance to a governance model that avoids excessive government regulation and micro-governance. Research governance involves, in particular, the implementation of an institutional policy to create an environment in which high scientific and ethical standards are met when conducting research. The purpose of the article is to perform a comparative analysis of the specificities of implementing institutional policies on research virtue at British and Ukrainian universities. It has been established that in higher education institutions of both countries ensuring research integrity is one of the main directions of institutional policies; adherence to ethical principles in conducting research is mandatory for members of the university community. At the same time, unlike domestic universities in British higher education institutions, institutional policies on research integrity are more clearly defined, open and transparent. To achieve this goal, methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, systematization of scientific and internet sources were used, which revealed the peculiarities of supporting/developing a culture of research virtue in the system of research governance in the leading universities in the UK. The comparative analysis made it possible to offer recommendations for domestic higher education institutions to overcome the crisis of academic, in particular, research integrity. The use of the method of generalization made it possible to draw conclusions about the results of the study.
