Background and Objectives: Multilevel factors drive health disparities experienced by sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations. We developed a 3-hour symposium focusing on care for SGM youth to address this. The symposium was a free, extracurricular event open to the public, with an emphasis on health professional students and providers from all disciplines and involved interprofessional didactic and interactive components. Methods: Participants completed optional retrospective pre/postsurveys immediately and 10 months postsymposium. Surveys contained Likert-scale questions addressing five indicators of symposium effectiveness related to knowledge, confidence, and comfort in providing care for SGM populations. We used 1-tailed paired t tests to evaluate the effectiveness of the symposium, and analysis of variance tests to compare differences by professional role. Results: Of 208 individuals who attended the symposium, 67 completed the initial survey, and 23 completed the 10-months postsymposium survey. Participants reported significantly higher (P<.001) scores across all five measures of effectiveness from pre- to immediately postsymposium, and remained at significantly higher (P<.05) scores across all measures from presymposium to 10 months postsymposium, except for comfort recommending care for SGM pediatric patients or clients. Conclusion: Results suggest that the symposium improved participants’ perceived effectiveness in serving SGM pediatric patients, although selection bias is a concern. Dissemination of educational approaches that incorporate interprofessional didactic and active learning components may help improve workforce capacity to improve SGM health.

Abstract Background: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people comprise approximately 5% of the U.S. population, yet health care professional student education on sexual and gender minority (SGM) health is sparse. This study explored the degree to which sociodemographic factors and student affiliation with SGM people explained self-reported competence in caring for SGM patients. Methods: This study sought to define Reduced Models from an eight-variable Full Model that explained a meaningful amount (≥ 0.15) of total variance across a sample of health care professional students in terms of six criterion variables: Basic Knowledge, Attitudinal Awareness and Clinical Preparedness (subscales of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Development of Clinical Skills Scale); Attitudes Toward LGBT People Scale (ATLPS); and Beliefs and Behaviors (subscales of the Gay Affirming Practice Scale). Results: Political affiliation, religiosity, and SGM affiliation were predictor variables in half of the Reduced Models. SGM-specific health training hours were included in Reduced Models for Clinical Preparedness and affirming Behaviors. Conclusion: Sociodemographic factors, lived experiences, and amount of training in SGM-specific health matter when it comes to health care professional students’ sense of preparedness in caring for SGM patients.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) young people are coming of age at a time of dynamic social and political changes with regard to LGBTQ rights and visibility around the world. And yet, contemporary cohorts of SGM youth continue to evidence the same degree of compromised mental health demonstrated by SGM youth of past decades. The authors review the current research on SGM youth mental health, with careful attention to the developmental and contextual characteristics that complicate, support, and thwart mental health for SGM young people. Given a large and rapidly growing body of science in this area, the authors strategically review research that reflects the prevalence of these issues in countries around the world but also concentrate on how mental health concerns among SGM children and youth are shaped by experiences with schools, families, and communities. Promising mental health treatment strategies for this population are reviewed. The chapter ends with a focus on understudied areas in the SGM youth mental health literature, which may offer promising solutions to combat SGM population health disparities and promote mental health among SGM young people during adolescence and as they age across the life course.
