The study is concerned with Al-Aswany’s political opinion articles that have been published since 2011 until 2014. The study is concerned with argumentative persuasion. It aims at examining how the use of argumentative strategies, presuppositions and directives persuade the reader into accepting the proposed arguments and analyzing the degree of persuasion present in the text. Moreover, the study aims at examining whether there is an attempt to manipulate the reader. The data used, in this study, are drawn from Al-Aswany’s opinion articles that have been published in Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper. The researcher has selected two articles from each year: 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. All in all, eight selected articles are gathered for a qualitative analysis. The findings of the study show that his articles are highly persuasive as he, extensively, uses cognitive directives, establishes a common ground through the use of topos of reality and presuppositions, evokes empathy towards the protesters and the revolutions through humanitarianism and justice while raising a feeling of threat/danger from Mubarak’s old regime. Furthermore, even though the texts are highly persuasive, to claim that there is a manipulation from Al-Aswany’s part , using these linguistic tools and models, can not be strongly suggested.

However, further studies using different linguistic instruments might yield more accurate results.

The chapter discusses, comparatively, funding mechanisms for universities in Europe and advances potential ways for their harmonization in the framework of their Bologna convergence. The findings of the research suggest that, while there is a European-level shift to performance-based funding and quantitative indicators tend to say that European HE funding systems are to a certain degree convergent, qualitative analysis indicates that the outcomes are still divergent and more efforts have to be put into really bringing these systems to a common ground.

ABSTRACT: In this work, we have, as a theoretical framework, studies from the scope of linguistics, specifically in the areas of Rhetoric and Argumentation. From these areas, we will have the concepts of ethos, of presence and repetition figures, and of the rhetorical figures such as metaphor and personification. The analysis, whose corpus is the tale “The fortune teller”, from the writer Machado de Assis, aims to investigate the constitution of the ethos of the storyteller in the selected corpus. In addition, it also seeks to observe the argumentative strategies used by the speaker, in order to get the auditorium’s/reader’s adhesion. Therefore, we made a qualitative analysis of the tale, to grasp the evidenced ethe. With this analysis, we hope to contribute to the expansion of the study about the constitution of rhetorical ethos in the tale “The fortune teller”.   KEYWORDS: rhetoric; ethos; tale; Machado de Assis.

The study is concerned with Al-Aswany’s political opinion articles that have been published since 2011 until 2014. The study investigates whether Al-Aswany persuades or manipulates the reader. Using VanDijk’s model, presuppositions as well as the directives in Hyland’s model of interaction, the study aims at analyzing how Al-Aswany manipulates the reader. Moreover, the study is set to find out whether a correlation between the use of directives and manipulation exists.

Formative intervention is a participatory methodology that supports organizational change by means of an interactive and systematic dialogue carried out by researchers and participants. In this process, the researchers contribute to expanding the conversational space in the organization by supporting participants in examining and reflecting on their own work practices, as well as in modeling, shaping, and experimenting with innovations. Drawing on transcripts of videotaped sessions, this study analyzes how change is discursively sustained by the researchers who conduct the meetings within a formative intervention in a Mexican hospital. The quantitative and qualitative analysis focuses on the collective pronoun “we” as a membership categorization device deployed by the researchers for rhetorical and pragmatical aims, such as questioning about the state of necessity for the intervention, engaging the participants, or introducing a proposal of innovation with the participants. Results show how group membership and social identity markers are used by researchers to support emerging forms of collaboration, involvement of participants and the creation of common ground during the intervention process. In terms of the practical implications of the study, an informed and strategic use of membership categorization devices used by the researcher can increase the effectiveness of their formative and expansive role.

Abstract In this paper, argumentation practices will be discussed in view of their potential for favoring effective information sharing and the creation of ‘emergent common ground’, i.e. the common ground that is sought, created and co-constructed in the process of communication. Argumentation is usually tightly knit with information sharing: if the parties have not previously shared a sufficient amount of relevant knowledge, it is difficult for them to produce effective argumentation. Based on these premises, in this paper the argumentation stages of medical encounters will be viewed as opportunities to reveal and integrate insufficient common ground between clinicians and patients. By relying on the analysis of a corpus of real life encounters in a chronic care setting, the interaction between information sharing and argumentation will be shown, along with problematic cases of misunderstandings or ineffective argumentation due to lack of common ground. Implications for the clinical practice will be discussed.

Abstract In this paper, we explore cultural values and expectations that might vary among different groups. Using the collectivist-individualist framework, we discuss differences in beliefs about the caregiver role in teaching and interacting with young children. Differences in these beliefs can lead to dissatisfaction with services on the part of caregivers and with frustration in service delivery on the part of service providers. We propose that variation in caregiver and service provider perspectives arise from cultural values, some of which are instilled through our own training as speech-language pathologists. Understanding where these differences in cultural orientation originate can help to bridge these differences. These can lead to positive adaptations in the ways that speech-language pathology services are provided within an early intervention setting that will contribute to effective intervention.
