Corporate performance measurement is a key prerequisite for successful management, a process of guiding the enterprise from the existing to the particular, desired performance. Traditional performance measurement systems, based on the use of financial indicators, do not satisfy the needs of modern enterprises. They provide the measurement of the past results, but they do not provide enough quality information for improvement of performance in the future. Nowadays, a great number of different performance measurement systems have been developed. They have a more complex approach to performance analysis, using both financial and non financial indicators grouped in a certain number of performance perspectives. The disadvantages of this modern performance measurement systems can be diminished through their integration, which leads to creating new, integrated performance measurement systems.

Purpose The pivotal role of knowledge management (KM) and its extensive implications have been debated in the academic literature with insufficient focus on its link to particular organizational control mechanisms such as performance measurement systems (PMS). To bridge this gap and building on resource orchestration theory, this paper aims to investigate the relationships between KM factors, PMS and corporate performance. Design/methodology/approach Based on a survey data set of 92 listed companies in Iran, the framework and hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM) based on partial least squares (PLS). Findings The SEM-PLS results indicate that knowledge assets are significantly associated with both PMS and corporate performance while knowledge process capabilities (KPC) are not significantly associated with PMS and corporate performance. This study also shows that PMS mediates the relationship between knowledge assets and corporate performance. Practical implications The results suggest that the use of appropriate management control systems plays an effective role in synchronizing, aligning and orchestrating a company’s various knowledge resources, which, in turn, can lead to superior overall performance. Originality/value Building on a unique synthesis of resource orchestration theory and the knowledge-based view of the firm, the results of this study provide the first empirical evidence on how PMS intervenes in the relationship between knowledge resources (knowledge assets and KPC) and corporate performance.

Untuk menjamin kualitas pendidikan di Program Studi Teknik Industri Universitas PGRI Adi Buana surabaya, diperlukan sebuah rancangan sistem pengukuran kinerja (SPK) yang terintegrasi dengan metode IPMS (Integrated Performance Measurement Systems). Dengan metode IPMS, Key Performance Indicators (KPI) Program Studi Teknik Industri ditentukan berdasarkan stakeholder requirement melalui empat tahapan yaitu; identifikasi stakeholder requirement, external monitor, penetapan objectives, dan identifikasi KPIs. Hasil perancangan SPK di Program Studi Teknik Industri Universitas PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya, dapat mengidentifikasi 26 KPIs yang dikelompokkan dalam 9 kriteria kinerja Program Studi Teknik Industri, yaitu; kurikulum, mahasiswa, finansial, SDM, administrasi akademik, proses belajar mengajar, lulusan, evaluasi dan pengendalian, dan masyarakat

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0.5in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-themecolor: text1;" lang="EN-GB"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Performance management literature has been advocating the balanced use of non-financial measures alongside traditional financial measures, possibly within integrated performance measurement systems, since the early 1990&rsquo;s. The purpose of this paper is to explore how contextual factors (such as company size, industry, and market position), business objectives and knowledge about contemporary management tools influence the decision to implement Balanced Scorecard or similar integrated performance management systems. We tested our research propositions regarding the influence of these factors by using survey data and a logistic regression model. The study is based on a survey conducted in 2008 on a sample of 323 Slovenian companies. The sample consists of large, medium, and small firms from different industrial sectors, including manufacturing and service. Overall, our results confirm contextual factors, such as company size and industry, and knowledge about management tools as most important determinants of integrated performance measurement systems usage. Although market position and business objectives also receive some support for their influence, the results are generally weaker and more ambiguous.</span></span></p>

Purpose The temporality of performance measurement systems has been claimed to affect actors’ time orientation, such as that of listed company managers. The purpose of this paper is to explore this view. Design/methodology/approach The study uses constructivist data gathered from executives in one listed and one non-listed company. Findings The study shows that the research on performance measurement is based on a linear-quantitative view on time that assumes that humans orient towards the future from one point, the present; this view excludes other time-related constructs, particularly the past, and highlights a choice between the short term and the long term, idealising the long term. It is shown that the performance measurement of non-listed company executives is constructed through past-based, present-based and future-based rationalities: executives acknowledge the past as a basis for present and future performance, present actions as shaping future performance and future plans and performance targets as bases for present actions. Listed company executives’ performance measurement is constructed predominantly through the present-based time rationality. Research limitations/implications “The orientation from the present” and the “short” and “long terms” could be enhanced with time rationalities. Practical implications The evaluation periods within performance measurement systems do not determine the time orientations of the actors subjected to those systems; time rationalities could be considered when designing such systems. Originality/value The paper provides a novel view on performance measurement and time.

Purpose – For over 20 years, management control literature has indicated the importance of supporting the strategy development and implementation process with strategic performance measurement systems (SPMS) and integrating traditional financial indicators with a set of multidimensional forward-looking measures focusing on the long term and linked to cause-effect relationships. Nevertheless, knowledge on the specific SPMS models used in practice and their effectiveness in supporting the managerial decision-making process is still fragmented and ambiguous. The purpose of this paper is to first analyse the SPMS models used in practice, also considering the role of strategy and firm size as drivers of adoption, thereafter analysing the capability of SPMS models to provide managers with measures that are consistent with their strategic information needs. Design/methodology/approach – The research is based on a survey involving 88 Italian medium-large sized firms (or subsidiaries of multinational firms) operating on a global level. Findings – The cluster analysis identifies two very different SPMS models used in practice. The first is the Short-term Financial Model, and as its name indicates, is based on short-term, internally focused and unconnected financial indicators. The second is the Multidimensional Additive Model, which integrates financial and non-financial measures but without a fully developed fit with the strategy. The research primarily indicates unsatisfied information needs in both clusters, presenting a significant challenge to the further development of existing SPMS models and in defining new theoretical SPMS frameworks. Practical implications – The adoption of an incremental approach to SPMS, simply adding new operational and strategic non-financial measures without a real fit with the strategy does not increase the information effectiveness of the system. Originality/value – The paper analyses the characteristics and use of SPMS models in practice from an exploratory perspective, defining and applying a model to evaluate the information effectiveness of SPMS.

P2KP adalah Program penanggulangan Kemiskinan di Perkotaan atas prakarsa Departemen Pekerjaan Umum yang kemudian berganti nama menjadi PNPM Mandiri Perkotaan dimana program ini meliputi tingkat kelurahan, kecamatan, kabupaten dan propinsi. Dalam prakteknya, pelaporan kinerja PNPM Mandiri ini masih didasarkan pada laporan review Partisipatif dari masyarakat sebagai bentuk pertanggungjawabannya dimana harus dituntut transparan dan akuntabilitas. Sistem pengukuran kinerja sepeti itu tidak bisa mengukur kinerja organisasi secara pasti dan terukur nilainya. Oleh sebab itu dibuatlah rancangan sistem pengukuran kinerja organisasi dengan pendekatan Integrated Performance Measurement Systems yang mengintegrasikan semua elemen yang terlibat didalam organisasi. Berdasarkan rancangan pengukuran kinerja tersebut dan disimulasikan didapatkan hasil kinerja organisasi dan hasilnya berupa nilai pencapaian yang dapat terukur.
