This paper examines the effects of regional economic integration in Europe, especially the North-North and North-South integration patterns, and how the benefits and costs of integration are divided between countries. Outcomes depend on: comparative advantages, factor endowments, factor intensities, competitive advantages, FDI flows, transfers of technology, knowledge spillovers, economies of scale, transport costs, industry/GDP ratios, and agglomeration forces. The North-North integration between high income countries tends to lead to convergence of country incomes. Contrary, the South-South integration between low income countries causes divergence. Low income countries are likely to be better served by the North-South integration.

Subject Customs union. Significance On June 26, Presidents Jimmy Morales of Guatemala and Juan Orlando Hernandez of Honduras formally launched a customs union between their countries, in an effort to boost trade by reducing or eliminating tariffs. The arrangement is the first of its type in Central America and may prove a step towards greater regional economic integration. Impacts The union may attract greater foreign investment, by allowing potential investors to spread operations across two countries. Bilateral moves may allow integration to advance in easily negotiable areas, while problematic issues such as border disputes are deferred. Washington’s recently stated intention to maintain tariff-free trade within NAFTA should ease concerns regarding the future of DR-CAFTA. Increased US deportations will further discourage moves towards more open borders, particularly between the north and south of the Isthmus.

Nigeria's leadership role in inter-African relations remains a myth despite the country's assertiveness in the areas of liberation, conflict mediation and regional economic integration. Rhetoric and posturing in inter-African diplomacy have become a substitute for reality. Furthermore, the weakness of the Nigerian domestic structure and the effects of the structural adjustment programme negate Nigerians capabilities to exert a leadership in inter-African diplomacy.
