Opening ParagraphThe Apostolic Church of John Maranke (Vapostori or Bapostolo), an indigenous Christian church founded in Umtali, Rhodesia, now has congregations across Central Africa. For the Church's central ritual event, the Sabbath kerek, and other occasions of worship, singing constitutes the core of ritual practice and is used to invoke the presence of the Holy Spirit. These songs combine traditional Bantu rhythmic patterns with a unique Apostolic form. Often drawn from biblical themes, the songs are composed by members as spiritually inspired pieces.

In 2014, Ray Yeo published a modified account of the Spirit’s indwelling in “Towards a Model of the Indwelling: A Conversation with Jonathan Edwards and William Alston.” Yeo utilizes a conglomerate of Two-Minds Christology and Spirit Christology to provide a metaphysical framework for his model which he believes offers a viable alternative to more traditional merger accounts like those of Edwards and Alston. After providing an overview of Yeo’s objections to the merger accounts of Alston and Edwards, I will summarize Yeo’s modified model. I will argue Yeo’s emphasis on the humanity of Christ in lieu of a literal, internal, and direct union of the Holy Spirit and the human person cannot alleviate the core metaphysical concerns which surface in all accounts of union between the divine and human.  Yeo’s misunderstanding of Two-Minds Christology leads him to deny the full humanity of Christ; a humanity upon which his entire account of the indwelling relies. Yeo’s modified model will be shown unsuccessful as an account of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit even if one accepts both his conception of Two-Minds Christology and his conditions for indwelling.

Daar word meestal aanvaar dat die woord διακρινόμενος in Handelinge 10:20 vir die betekenis ‘huiwer/twyfel’ gebruik word en dat Petrus volgens hierdie vers die opdrag kry om saam met Kornelius se mense te gaan ‘sonder om te huiwer’. In hierdie artikel word egter aangetoon dat die woord διακρινόμενος in die vers vir die betekenis ‘om onderskeid te tref’ gebruik word en dat die Heilige Gees met die woorde μηδὲν διακρινόμενος aan Petrus en die Christelike Kerk ’n entscheidenden Wendepunkt [belangrike keerpunt]-voorskrif gee. Dit is ’n voorskrif wat aandui dat ’n spesifieke bedeling tot ’n einde gekom het, naamlik die bedeling waarin Israel onderskeid ten opsigte van voedsel en van mense moes tref. Die voorskrif van die Gees μηδὲν διακρινόμενος gee ook ’n aanduiding van ’n nuwe bedeling wat aangebreek het. In die nuwe bedeling hoef mense nie eers deel van Israel te word voordat hulle vir God aanvaarbaar is nie. Hierdie nuwe bedeling het God deur Jesus Christus en sy versoeningswerk laat aanbreek. In die nuwe bedeling is God nie meer net die God van Israel nie, maar is sy Gesalfde Here van almal en Regter oor alle mense van alle tye. In hierdie bedeling ontvang elke mens van alle volke wat in Jesus Christus glo, vergifnis in sy Naam en is almal wat in Hom glo, één.It is generally accepted that the word διακρινόμενος in Acts 10:20 is used for the meaning ‘hesitate/doubt’ and therefore Peter is according to this verse, instructed to go with Cornelius’s people ‘without hesitation’. In this article, however, it is argued that the word διακρινόμενος is used for the meaning ‘to distinguish’ and that the Holy Spirit gives Peter and the Christian Church an entscheidenden Wendepunkt prescript with the words μηδὲν διακρινόμενος. It is a prescript which indicates that a particular epoch has come to an end, namely the epoch in which Israel had to distinguish with regard to food and people. The prescript of the Spirit μηδὲν διακρινόμενος also heralds a new epoch. In the new epoch, people do not need to become part of Israel before they can be accepted by God. This new epoch was brought about by God through Jesus Christ and his work of reconciliation. In the new epoch, God is no longer just the God of Israel; his Anointed is Lord and Judge of all people of all times. In this epoch all people from all nations who believe in Jesus Christ, receive forgiveness in his Name and all people who believe in him, are one.

Peter Wagner, as an expert on church growth, stated that the Apostolic church is a church that is experiencing rapid growth. This claim is made because many Apostolic churches have been built around the world. The church continued the spirit of the apostles at the time of the early church's birth. However, it is important to conduct an in-depth study regarding the realization in the field; whether a thriving Apostolic church is carrying out God's mission or the personal ambition of a charismatic church leader. This study analyzes how the church which is said to be an Apostolic church runs its organization so that it experiences significant growth. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The researcher tries to explore the phenomena and data obtained through respondents about the transformative apostolic church that was developed in the ministry of the Indonesian Bethel Church of Gatot Subroto. In conclusion, GBI Gatot Subroto is a transformative apostolic church, because of several things, such as a visionary church, senior pastors or mentor pastors as apostolic leaders, divine authority and the work of the Holy Spirit have an impact, the church as a center for leadership training and discipleship across generations implements apostolic ministry followed by other gifts/services, prioritizing mission, and focusing on the Kingdom of God.AbstrakPeter Wagner, sebagai salah satu ahli pertumbuhan gereja, menyatakan bahwa gereja Apostolik adalah gereja yang mengalami pertumbuhan secara pesat. Klaim ini disampaikan karena banyak-nya terbangun gereja-gereja beraliran Apostolik di seluruh dunia. Gereja tersebut melanjutkan semangat para rasul pada masa lahirnya gereja mula-mula. Namun, penting untuk dilakukan kajian mendalam terkait realisasi di lapangan; apakah gereja Apostolik yang berkembang menja-lankan misi Allah atau ambisi pribadi dari pemimpin gereja yang berkharismatik. Penelitian ini menganalisis bagaimana gereja yang dikatakan sebagai gereja Apostolik menjalankan organisa-sinya, sehingga mengalami pertumbuhan yang signifikan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif. Peneliti berusaha mengeksplorasi fenomena dan data-data yang diperoleh melalui responden tentang gereja apostolik transformatif yang dikembangkan dalam pelayanan Gereja Bethel Indonesia Gatot Subroto. Kesimpu-lannya, GBI Gatot Subroto adalah gereja apostolik transformatif, karena beberapa hal, seperti: gereja yang visioner, gembala senior atau gembala pembina sebagai pemimpin kerasulan, otoritas Ilahi dan pekerjaan Roh Kudus berdampak, gereja sebagai pusat pelatihan kepemimpinan dan pemuridan lintas generasi, menerap-kan jawatan rasuli diikuti karunia-karunia/jawatan lainnya, memprioritaskan misi, dan berfokus pada Kerajaan Allah.

Ecclesiastical exclusiveness has been among the persistent historical characteristics of the Christian church as, in its various forms and by varying degreees, it has insisted on monopoly in the mediation of salvation. The Cyprianic theme of extra ecclesiam nulla salus has not lacked occasion for re-utterance throughout the centuries, whether by the pen of Augustine, Boniface VIII, Luther or Calvin, though meanings, of course, have changed in differing theological and ecclesiastical circumstances. The church as custodian of the sacraments and chief locus of the work of the Holy Spirit, the church as supreme, universal institutional authority under the rulership of the vicar of Christ, the church as proclaimer of the Word and its promises and thus the home of saving faith—these are among the designations historically utilized to support the exclusivistic affirmations.

Pentecostals share an interest in the work and person of the Holy Spirit although not at the cost of a well-developed Christology. The term Paraclete (παράκλητος) appears four times in the Gospel according to John in reference to the Holy Spirit (Jn 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7), and once in 1 John 2:1 in reference to Jesus. The question the article asks is: What is meant by the notion of the Spirit as Paraclete from a primarily Pentecostal perspective? To answer the question it is necessary to ask where John’s Paraclete fits into the pneumatology of the early Christian Church before investigating the different contexts in the Johannine literature and what they suggest about the Spirit (and Jesus) as Paraclete. Lastly the meaning of the term in the Graeco-Roman world of the 1st century CE is observed before some suggestions are made for interpreting Paraclete, specifically in forensic terms.

‘The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life ... the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them.’ This passage from the teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) (234) on the profession of faith identifies the core principles and underlying recognition of Catholics regarding belief in a triune God – one God existent in three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In addressing the people of Ephesus, St. Ignatius of Antioch (also known as Theophorus) said, faithful Christians were ‘being stones of the temple of the Father, prepared for the building of God the Father, and drawn up on high by the instrument of Jesus Christ, which is the cross, making use of the Holy Spirit as a rope, while your faith was the means by which you ascended, and your love the way which led up to God.’ (Ignatius of Antioch, 2014, loc. 4027.) St. Ignatius goes on to say, ‘the Holy Spirit does not speak His own things, but those of Christ, and that not from himself, but from the Lord’. The point St. Ignatius was making is that the three Persons of the triune God are integrally connected, and it is through the grace of the three-in-One that salvation is gained. Hence, the Trinity is the core of the Christian faith, but from the very beginning the faithful relied on metaphor to explain and help others understand how Three could be One

Abstract In the long course of Christian history there have been many expressions of the action of the Holy Spirit in renewing the Christian Church through a variety of renewal movements. Two such movements are the twentieth-century Pentecostal movement and the thirteenth-century Franciscan movement. While there is no specific historical link one with the other, there are resources in the older movement, with its concern for direct human experience of Christ, its return to biblical poverty, a hope of renewing the church by a restoration of biblical holiness, its experience of gradually integrating its radical view of the end of time with the institutional church, and its impulsive missionary outreach, that offer many lessons for the newer movement as it serves worldwide Christianity.

The exceptional value of the Psalms in the Christian churchThe Psalms have a special place in the Bible as God's great prayer and hymn book. It is the work of various people, under the most representative situations, but it is also the work of the Holy Spirit. The Psalms express the lives, struggles, joy and praise of people before God with great clarity and true compassion. Their experiences of life, seen in the light of the living God, are vivid and real. The Christian Church took over the Psalms as their own, after the example of Jesus, whose life and work was seen as pictured in them. It became their prayer and hymn book - their life guide. The message of the Psalms is of such exceptional spiritual depth, expressing in great clarity every human need and emotion before God, that the Christian Church could find and understand itself in those situations and could associate itself with it.

The Christian church has believed that the work of the Holy Spirit is essential in the ministry of preaching. In the development of contemporary homiletics, namely the New Homiletic, however, the work of the Holy Spirit is often found missing and minimized. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the neglected role of the Holy Spirit in preaching within the New Homiletic is not a mere coincidence, but a necessary consequence of the eventfulness of preaching that the New Homiletic has been engaged in. This is to be proven by examining (i) the demythologization program of Rudolf Bultmann and (ii) the concept of “language-event” or “word-event” of the new hermeneutic, which was appropriated to the eventfulness of preaching by the New Homiletic.

Opening ParagraphThis article deals with the system of beliefs of an Independent African Church, the Apostles, founded in 1932 in the eastern province of Rhodesia by John Maranke. It seeks to define the Apostles' concept of ‘the Holy Spirit’, around which their whole religion centres. An analysis of this concept will make it clear that it has arisen out of a synthesis of elements from two older religions, namely traditional Karanga religion and Christianity as it has been presented to Rhodesian Africans by Catholic and Protestant missionaries.
