Clinical Relevance Storage temperature affects the alteration rate of one-step adhesives for all-in-one adhesive systems and self-etching primer for two-step adhesive systems. Their shelf life is strongly dependent on the storage temperature and time period. Storage under 20°C extends their shelf life.

Clinical Relevance Etch & rinse systems showed better initial interfacial adaptation than self-etch systems. The differences disappeared after 6-months water storage. The thicker the hybrid layer formed by self-etching adhesives, the lower the immediate gap formation.

Clinical Relevance The improvement of resin-enamel bond strengths after using Si-C paper and diamond burs for enamel preparation is material dependent. No degradation of enamel bond strength could be observed for any one-step self-etch adhesive system after 12 months of water storage.

Clinical Relevance Decreased leakage was associated with Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (total etch) and iBond (self-etch) systems in Class V resin composite restorations. All adhesive systems performed best when bonded to enamel compared to dentin surface anatomy. Clinicians should be aware that strict adherence to manufacturer instructions, when using these materials, is of primary importance.

Clinical Relevance Resin-dentin bonds, which may have an influence on the long-term success of restorations, are prone to deterioration after cyclic loading. The tested one-step self-etching system (Etch&Prime 3.0) provided the least reliable dentin adhesion. After acid etching of dentin, alcohol/based adhesives performed better than those containing acetone as solvent.

Clinical Relevance The delay in placement of composite over single-application self-etching adhesive systems was a crucial factor influencing dentin bond strength compared to a composite placed immediately after the polymerization of adhesives.

Clinical Relevance To achieve optimum bond strengths, acid etching of dentin prior to the application of single-step self-etch adhesive systems should be avoided.
