Abstract Objective This study sought to investigate the toothbrush-dentifrice abrasion of dental sealants. Materials and Methods Weight loss (∆W) and depth loss (∆D) were used as abrasion indicators. Sealant samples from nine products were soaked in dentifrice slurry and abraded by using a toothbrushing machine with a brushing force of 300 g. The mean percentages of ∆W and mean values of ∆D after 24,000 and 48,000 strokes of brushing were compared by using paired t-test. A comparison of these mean values among sealant products was performed by using one-way ANOVA and multiple comparison analysis (Scheffe's test). Results Abrasive wear was observed in all sealants. Teethmate F-1 (Kuraray Noritake, Tokyo, Japan)—a fluoride-releasing unfilled sealant—exhibited the maximum abrasive wear, with ∆W and ∆D values of 1.14% ± 0.37% and 12.84 ± 4.28 µm, respectively. Delton (Dentsply Sirona, Charlotte, North Carolina, United States), a light-cured unfilled sealant, showed the minimum abrasive wear, with ∆W and ∆D values of 0.41% ± 0.09% and 2.93 ± 1.23 µm, respectively. No statistical differences were observed among unfilled sealants except when compared with Teethmate F-1. Similarly, no differences were observed when comparing among filled sealants and flowable composite. Conclusion Abrasive wear occurred in all sealants after brushing with dentifrice. Almost all unfilled sealants showed less wear compared with both filled sealants and flowable composite. However, the low abrasive values of all sealants after brushing with dentifrice implied that there is no clinical significance to this finding.

Background: Posts that have been properly fitted can withstand torsion forces and so provide better retention. The push-out bonding strength of glass fiber posts to the root canal was evaluated using resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) and flowable composite (FC). Method: Forty single-rooted maxillary central incisors were used in the study. The samples were randomly divided into two groups of 20 teeth each. The crown-down procedure was used to clean and shape the pulp area. A Tenax fiber trans Coltene whaletene post was used by both groups. The first group utilized FC (Filtek Z 350 3M ESPE) to coat the post, whereas the second group used RMGIC (Rely X 3M ESPE). The specimens were cross-sectioned after 24 h. Specimens were cross-sectioned four millimeters thick into coronal and middle parts using a sectioning machine, yielding 40 specimens per group. The strength of the bond between the luting cement and the posts was measured using push-out bond strength testing. We loaded the components at a cross speed of 0.5 mm/min on a universal testing machine until the bond failed. Results: The FC group had a 4.80 N push-out bond strength, whereas the RMGIC group had a 7.11 N push-out bond strength. Conclusion: FC’s mean push-out bond strength score is lower than RMGIC’s.

Abstract Objectives Removal of esthetic restorations leads to loss of tooth structure and the extent of the loss is difficult to estimate due to exact-shade matching. This randomized double-blinded in vitro study aimed examining the influence of a white-opaque flowable composite depth marker as an optical removal aid for tooth substance preservation and shortened restoration removal time. Materials and methods Class II cavities (n = 100) in extracted healthy mandibular molars (n = 50, two runs) were prepared, filled, and the restoration removed. Tooth weight and volume (before and after) and removal time were measured and remnants visually documented. An optimal tooth shade-matched flowable composite liner was used as control. Results Tooth structure loss was significantly lower using a white-opaque liner. Mean values for volume/weight loss were 0.037 ± 0.030 g and 0.016 ± 0.005 cm3 (p < 0.01) for white-opaque liner; 0.067 ± 0.000 g and 0.028 ± 0.003 cm3 (p < 0.01) for tooth-colored composite. Removal time and number of pulp chamber perforations showed no significant differences (p = 0.80). Conclusions Within the limitations of this randomized double-blinded in vitro study, the use of a white-opaque flowable liner as a depth marker may provide the practitioner a visual aid in the replacement of a composite restoration and may protect against tooth structure loss. Clinical relevance When restoration replacement is indicated, removal of esthetic restorations often causes tooth structure loss due to difficult optical color matching. Using a white-opaque flowable liner as a depth marker clinically aids in restoration removal and protects against tooth structure loss.

Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different types and restorative techniques of Class I composite restorations with a single loading force on stress distribution and cyclic loading force on microleakage formation. Materials and Methods Class I cavities were prepared in premolars with 4 mm depth and divided into six groups of different restorations with: (1) Filtek Z250; (2) a 3-mm-thick layer of Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable Restoration and covered with Z250; (3) a 1.5-mm-thick layer of flowable composite and covered with Z250; (4) lining all cavity with flowable composite and restored with Z250; (5) Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior Restoration; and (6) lining all cavity with flowable composite and restored with bulk-fill composite. The specimens with and without cyclic occlusal loading were subjected to microleakage observation. In addition, six different models of Class I restorations corresponding to the microleakage study were generated. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to identify the stress distribution under a single loading force. Statistical Analysis Data were statistically analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and multiple comparison. The significance level set at 0.05. Results Cavity lining or restoration with flowable composite underneath conventional composite reduced stress on composite resin based on FEA (groups 2 and 3). The cyclic stress on composite increased microleakage. Restoration with flowable composite underneath conventional composite reduced the microleakage in Class I restoration (groups 2, 3, and 4). Conclusion The most effective cavity lining with a flowable composite underneath conventional composite restoration was stress reduction under loading force resulting in microleakage reduction.

BACKGROUND: One of the important parameters in assessing the definitive physical, mechanical, and biological characteristics of resin composites is the degree of conversion (DC), as composite qualities have been proven to improve with increasing the DC after photo-polymerization. Besides, fracture or secondary caries are the most common causes of composite resin failure. Accordingly, this reflects the need of formulating dental restorative materials possessing antibacterial activity. AIM: This study was designed to incorporate different concentrations of a new antibacterial agent (Octenidine dihydrochloride [OCT]) into an experimentally formulated flowable resin composite and evaluate its DC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four groups were tested in this study; group I was used as the control group, it’s a commercially available flowable composite “Herculite Ultra Flowable”. Group II was an experimental flowable composite with no antibacterial agent. During the preparation of the experimental flowable resin composite material, OCT antibacterial agent was added to the filler in special dark containers at a concentration of 1% wt. and 1.5% wt. respectively, in groups III and IV. The DC was measured and compared to the commercially available resin composite using the Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy method. RESULTS: Results of the current study showed that the mean values of DC ranged between (70.37 and 48.7), where Group1 showed the highest mean value, followed by Group 2 than Group 3, Group 4 specimens had the lowest mean value. The data showed that there is a statistically significant difference between all the tested groups. However, the DC was still within the accepted ranges for dental use. CONCLUSION: Based on the results obtained within the experimental conditions of this study it may be stated that the inclusion of the antibacterial OCT 1% and 1.5% wt., into the flowable resin composite showed satisfactory results for the DC as it met the ADA requirements for clinical use.

Objective: This prospective in vivo study aimed to compare the clinical behavior of a flowable composite resin (Genial Universal Flo, GC) and a nanohybrid universal composite resin (Tetric Evo Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent) used in Class I and II direct esthetic restorations in posterior teeth. Methods: A total of 108 Class I and II direct restorations were performed in patients aged between 20 and 60 years. The originality of this study lies in the fact that both materials were placed in pairs, in the same clinical environment (i.e., the same patient and the same type of tooth). The evaluations were performed now of restoration and after 2-weeks, 6-, 12-, and 24-months intervals using clinical examination, clinical photographs, and radiological examination, according to modified USPHS criteria. Statistical analysis was performed using the Fisher exact test and chi-square analysis. Results: At baseline, the universal composite resin showed better esthetic properties such as surface luster, surface staining marginal staining. Both materials regressed significantly over time with no significant difference between groups. Conclusions: Both flowable and nanohybrid composite resins exhibit acceptable clinical performance. The present 24 months of evaluation of different composites showed that the G-ænial Universal Flo could be an effective esthetic material for posterior restoration. No significant difference between both materials over time concerning surface luster, surface staining, and marginal staining.

To evaluate the flexural and bonding properties, marginal adaptation, and polymerization shrinkage in flowable composite restorations and their relationships, four new generation flowable composites, one conventional, and one bulk-fill flowable composite were used in this study. Flexural properties of the composites and shear bond strength to enamel and dentin for flowable restorations were measured immediately and 24 h after polymerization. Marginal adaptation, polymerization shrinkage, and stress were also investigated immediately after polymerization. The flexural properties, and bond strength of the flowable composites to enamel and dentin were much lower immediately after polymerization than at 24 h, regardless of the type of the composite. Polymerization shrinkage and stress varied depending on the material, and bulk-fill flowable composite showed much lower values than the others. The marginal adaptation and polymerization shrinkage of the composites appeared to have a much stronger correlation with a shear bond strength to dentin than to enamel. The weak mechanical properties and bond strengths of flowable composites in the early stage after polymerization must be taken into account when using them in the clinic. In addition, clinicians should be aware that polymerization shrinkage of flowable composites can still lead to the formation of gaps and failure of adaptation to the cavity regardless of the type of composite.

This study evaluated the 3-year clinical performance of four different flowable composite materials used in Small Class I restorations in permanent molars. This double-blinded, clinical study analyzed 229 Small Class I restorations/103 children at baseline, 12, 24, and 36 months with modified United States Public Health Services (USPHS) criteria. The tested flowable materials were Voco Grandio Flow + Voco Solobond M, Vivadent Tetric EvoFlow + Vivadent Excite, Dentsply X-Flow + Dentsply Prime&Bond NT, and 3M ESPE Filtek Supreme XT Flow + 3M ESPE Scotchbond Universal. The retention and marginal adaptation rates were highest for Grandio Flow and X Flow materials after 36 months, resulting in the highest score of clinical acceptability at 95.3% and 97.6%, respectively. The Tetric EvoFlow and Filtek Supreme XT Flow had the same retention rate after 36 months at 88.1%. Statistical significance was found in Grandio flow material in postoperative sensitivity criteria (p = 0.021). Tetric EvoFlow showed statistical differences in retention (p = 0.01), color match (p = 0.004), and marginal adaptation (p = 0.042). Filtek Supreme showed statistical differences in retention (p = 0.01) and marginal adaptation (p < 0.001). The flowable composite materials showed excellent clinical efficacy after 36 months of their clinical usage. There was no difference among the tested flowable composite materials quality in Small Class I restorations over time.
