Clinical Relevance Decreased leakage was associated with Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (total etch) and iBond (self-etch) systems in Class V resin composite restorations. All adhesive systems performed best when bonded to enamel compared to dentin surface anatomy. Clinicians should be aware that strict adherence to manufacturer instructions, when using these materials, is of primary importance.

Clinical Relevance Carbamide peroxide treatment increased the microleakage of Class V conventional glass-ionomer cement and resin modified glass-ionomer cement restorations. The resin coating is an effective method to avoid bleaching-induced microleakage without affecting the bleaching outcome.

Clinical Relevance The bond strength of resin composite to glass-ionomer cement can be enhanced when a self-etching primer is employed over unset GIC or when a glass-ionomer based adhesive is employed over set GIC when compared to using a total-etch adhesive.

Clinical Relevance Class V restorations are a common challenge to clinicians. These restorations involve problems, including isolation, adhesion, insertion technique, finishing and polishing. In order to solve these problems, several techniques have been developed. This article describes a new technique for the restoration of Class V cavities, one that eliminates rubber dam isolation and avoids any contamination. If used properly, this technique also provides good cervical contour, reducing or eliminating finishing and polishing procedures.

The use of a protective cervical barrier (PCB) is very well established to perform a safe internal bleaching; however, there is still no consensus on which material has the best sealing ability. Objective: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the apical and linear sealing of different PCB materials placed during internal bleaching. Material and methods: This study had two study factors: PCB positioning, divided at two levels (cement-enamel junction [CEJ] and 1mm above the cement enamel junction [CEJ+1]); and PCB material, divided at eight levels (resin composite [RC], glass ionomer cement [GIC], resin-modified glass ionomer cement liner [LRGIC], restorative resin-modified glass ionomer cement [RRGIC], zinc phosphate cement [ZPC], eugenol-free zinc oxide cement [ZOC], provisional filling resin [PFR] and gutta-percha as control [GUT]). Response variables were apical and linear sealing obtained through dye penetration and analyzed with a digital microscope. Data were subjected to two-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey test (p<0.05). Results: The main factor for both apical and linear sealing was the type of material (p<0.01) regardless of their position. RC and ZPC presented the worst sealing values (p<0.05). The Spearman rank correlation coefficient revealed a positive correlation between the apical and linear leakage. Conclusion: The results suggest that RC and ZPC must be avoided as a PCB during internal bleaching procedures.

Purpose of the Investigation To investigate, by questionnaire, the direct restorative materials used by a sample of practitioners from the Unite d Kingdom. Basic Procedures A postal questionnaire was distributed to a group of self-selected practitioners, who volunteered to participate in the study. In all 110 practitioners participated in the study. Main Findings The most used material for the restoration of occlusal (Class I) and approximal (Class II) lesions was amalgam with 61% and 73% of practitioners indicating that they used amalgam in this situation. Adhesive tooth-coloured materials, specifically composites and compomers, were preferred by the majority of practitioners for anterior approximal (Class III) and incisal (Class IV) restorations with compomer preferred for Class V restorations including non-carious cervical lesions and for the restoration of primary teeth. Principal Conclusions It is concluded that the general practitioners surveyed in this study tend to use amalgam for the restoration of Class I and II lesions as opposed to resin composite. The majority of practitioners in this study used compomers, a relatively new group of restorative materials, with little evidence of traditional glass-ionomer cements being used routinely.
