Short-term moderate intensive high volume training program provides aerobic endurance benefit in wheelchair basketball players

As participation in wheelchair sports increases, the need of quantitative assessment of biomechanical performance indicators and of sports- and population-specific training protocols has become central. The present study focuses on junior wheelchair basketball and aims at (i) proposing a method to identify biomechanical performance indicators of wheelchair propulsion using an instrumented in-field test and (ii) developing a training program specific for the considered population and assessing its efficacy using the proposed method. Twelve athletes (10 M, 2 F, age = 17.1 ± 2.7 years, years of practice = 4.5 ± 1.8) equipped with wheelchair- and wrist-mounted inertial sensors performed a 20-metre sprint test. Biomechanical parameters related to propulsion timing, progression force, and coordination were estimated from the measured accelerations and used in a regression model where the time to complete the test was set as dependent variable. Force- and coordination-related parameters accounted for 80% of the dependent variable variance. Based on these results, a training program was designed and administered for three months to six of the athletes (the others acting as control group). The biomechanical indicators proved to be effective in providing additional information about the wheelchair propulsion technique with respect to the final test outcome and demonstrated the efficacy of the developed program.

Performance in wheelchair basketball is determined by capabilities, such as strength and power. The study has two aims: first, to analyze the association between speed and acceleration variables (collected in the bench press (BP) exercise) and the distinct percentages of one-repetition maximum (1RM); second, to analyze the effect of a strength training protocol on wheelchair basketball (WB) players according to their functional impairments. Ten Spanish male WB players volunteered to participate in the study. The players did a pretest and posttest (1RM in bench press) with 6-week muscle strength intervention program. The results showed a high association between the %1RM and the mean propulsive velocity (MPV) and the maximum velocity (Vmax), both in the total of the participants, and in each separate group of athletes. After implementing the strength training program, both the players of the IWBF (International Wheelchair Basketball Federation) < 2.5 group and those of IWBF > 2.5 group improved their 1RM (p < 0.01, ES = 0.20 to 0.23). However, the program produced positive effects at submaximal intensities in the MPV reached with 30, 40, 70, and 80 kg and in time to maximum velocity (TVmax) with 30, 40, and 70 kg (ES = −3.24 to 1.32) only in players with greater functional impairments. The high association between %1RM and MPV and Vmax can allow for determination the %1RM of the WB players in the BP using the MPV and the Vmax. The training program was effective in improving 1RM in both groups, while improvements in submaximal values only occurred in the IWBF < 2.5 group.

Sport of the disabled has been becoming more and more popular for several years, and wheelchair basketball is one of the most popular disciplines among the disabled. However, playing sports is connected with the possibility of injuries and pain in people training a given discipline. The aim of this study is to determine the occurrence of injuries and to identify most commonly injuries in athletes practicing basketball in wheelchairs. A literature review was conducted in Embase and Medline PubMed databases. Basic search terms are: shoulder injury OR shoulder pain OR upper limb disease OR upper limb disorders OR upper limb pain AND basketball OR basketball player OR wheelchair sport OR wheelchair user OR wheelchair athlete OR wheelchair basketball OR disabled sport OR disabled persons.Results: 511 non-duplicate results were found. At the stage of the analysis of titles and abstracts, 483 were rejected and 28 were qualified for the analysis of full texts. The review included 2 that met all the criteria. The topic is not discussed in large numbers in the literature and requires further research specifically focused on the prevention of shoulder injury as well as assessment of the risk of damage to individual elements that make up the shoulder joint and surrounding structures.
