Sport of the disabled has been becoming more and more popular for several years, and wheelchair basketball is one of the most popular disciplines among the disabled. However, playing sports is connected with the possibility of injuries and pain in people training a given discipline. The aim of this study is to determine the occurrence of injuries and to identify most commonly injuries in athletes practicing basketball in wheelchairs. A literature review was conducted in Embase and Medline PubMed databases. Basic search terms are: shoulder injury OR shoulder pain OR upper limb disease OR upper limb disorders OR upper limb pain AND basketball OR basketball player OR wheelchair sport OR wheelchair user OR wheelchair athlete OR wheelchair basketball OR disabled sport OR disabled persons.Results: 511 non-duplicate results were found. At the stage of the analysis of titles and abstracts, 483 were rejected and 28 were qualified for the analysis of full texts. The review included 2 that met all the criteria. The topic is not discussed in large numbers in the literature and requires further research specifically focused on the prevention of shoulder injury as well as assessment of the risk of damage to individual elements that make up the shoulder joint and surrounding structures.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate shoulder pain in a sample of elite wheelchair basketball players during their preparation for a major competition. Method: Seventeen male wheelchair basketball players, between 16 and 43 years of age, were studied during their athletic preparation for a wheelchair basketball championship. The shoulder pain questionnaire, impingement tests and shoulder range of motion were evaluated during a training camp. Spearman´s rank correlation coefficient was used to analyze the relationship between shoulder pain and range of motion indicating the value of the effect size. Results: Shoulder pain was evident in 52.9% of the sample and was significant and negatively correlated with range of motion, while 35.3% related to impingement tests player’s reported pain. The correlation was moderate to high. Conclusions: In conclusion, the use of shoulder pain questionnaire, goniometric measurements and clinical test could be a useful approach for monitoring the shoulder injuries of wheelchair basketball players to explore the possible consequences of performing repetitive movements. Resumen Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el dolor de hombro en jugadores de baloncesto en silla de ruedas de élite durante su preparación para una competencia de alto nivel. Método: Diecisiete jugadores masculinos de baloncesto en silla de ruedas, entre 16 y 43 años, fueron evaluados con el cuestionario para el dolor de hombro en jugadores de baloncesto en silla de ruedas, las pruebas clínicas y el rango de movimiento del hombro durante la preparación para un campeonato. El coeficiente de correlación de Spearman se utilizó para analizar la correlación entre el dolor de hombro y el rango de movimiento, indicando el valor del tamaño del efecto. Resultados: El dolor de hombro fue evidente en el 52.9% de la muestra, siendo significativo. En tanto que, hubo una correlación negativa entre el dolor de hombro y el rango de movimiento, mientras que el 35.3% reportó dolor de acuerdo con las pruebas clínicas. La correlación fue de moderada a alta. Conclusiones: La utilización del cuestionario, las mediciones goniométricas y las pruebas clínicas podrían ser herramientas adecuadas para monitorear la condición del hombro en los jugadores de baloncesto en silla de ruedas, y así explorar las posibles consecuencias de los movimientos repetitivos. Resumo Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a dor no ombro em uma amostra de jogadores de elite de basquete em cadeira de rodas durante sua preparação para uma competição de alto nível. Método: Dezessete jogadores de basquete em cadeira de rodas do sexo masculino, entre 16 e 43 anos de idade, foram avaliados com o questionário de dor no ombro, testes clínicos de impacto e amplitude articular durante o treinamento para um campeonato. O coeficiente de correlação de Spearman foi utilizado para analisar a relação entre dor no ombro e amplitude de movimento que indica o valor do tamanho do efeito. Resultados: A dor no ombro foi evidente em 52,9% da amostra e foi significativa e negativamente correlacionada com a amplitude de movimento, enquanto 35,3% teve uma correlação de moderada a alta em relação à dor durante os testes de impacto. Conclusões: Em conclusão, o uso de questionário de dor no ombro, medições goniométricas e teste clínico poderia ser uma abordagem útil para monitorar as lesões no ombro de jogadores de basquete em cadeira de rodas para explorar as possíveis consequências da realização de movimentos repetitivos.

Wheelchair basketball at the turn of the centuryWheelchair basketball was the first discipline, which was used in the rehabilitation process.Most hospitals and rehabilitation very quickly introduce this discipline. At the beginning was this game mainly for people with spinal cord injury designed. However, thanks to its attractiveness and modifications has become the most recognizable and most popular discipline of sport for the disabled. Evolution of wheelchair basketball began after popularizing it in the United States and still continues bringing together a huge number of players, coaches and officials. It is the only sports discipline fully professionalised.Wheelchair basketball players are professionals, and the final tournaments of the Olympic Games, World and European Championships, as well as the finals of the Champions League is watched by crowds of supporters.An example may be a match during the Paralympic Games in Sydney 2000, where the average number of viewers was 17.5 thousand. Currently, the European Wheelchair basketball Federation brings together more than 80 countries and this number is constantly growing.The article shows the dynamic growth of interest in wheelchair basketball last years. The development of this sport in Poland and abroad is growing, as well as a number of interested her disabledThe authors analyzed the collected material in the form Polish and foreign literature.

Occupational pain is pain caused by occupational activities. Most pain that is labelled occupational originates in the musculoskeletal system, for instance occupational back pain and upper limb pain. The additional diagnosis ‘occupational’ is important for treatment, prevention, and compensation. Workplace interventions such as ergonomic improvements can resolve pain or prevent pain in workers. However, studies of prevention of back pain and prevention of upper limb pain do not show major effects. Changes in working life such as the advent of computers have led to an increase in occupational pain. Preventive ergonomic improvements probably have effectively reduced these increases since then. Better evaluation of ergonomic intervention as part of treatment is needed. For prevention, studies with large numbers of participants are needed. Regulation should be more flexible and be adaptive to progress in science.

Background.  Disabled  persons  do  not  consider  and  use  a  single  identity  to  represent  themselves. Athletic identity as a wheelchair basketball player can help the process of acceptance and support psychological adjustment. Thus, there is a need to research the association between and the influence of the wheelchair basketball player’s qualification and a strong athletic identity on a person’s self-esteem (Hawkins, Coffee, & Soundy, 2014; Martin, Adams-Mushett, & Smith, 1995). Methods. The multidimensional Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (Brewer & Cornelius, 2002) was used to assess self-identity, social identity, exclusivity and negative affectivity of 36 wheelchair basketball players. Self-esteem was evaluated by the adapted V. Stolin’s (Столин, 1983) test including nine self-evaluation scales: internal integrity,  self-confidence,  self-direction,  self-image,  self-interest,  self-content,  self-orientation,  self-contradiction and self-accusation. Results.  It  was  found  out  that  the  athletic  identity  value  of  the  players  participating  in  international  level competitions (30 points) is statistically significantly higher compared to that of participating in national level events (18 points, p < .05). Conclusions. Disabled persons of the competition group with better athletic identity represented stronger self-integrity and were less self-accusative, more self-content, their self-confidence grew and they had a better self-image in comparison with the national level group.Keywords: self-confdence, self-image, persons with physical disability.

Computer vision-based action recognition of basketball players in basketball training and competition has gradually become a research hotspot. However, owing to the complex technical action, diverse background, and limb occlusion, it remains a challenging task without effective solutions or public dataset benchmarks. In this study, we defined 32 kinds of atomic actions covering most of the complex actions for basketball players and built the dataset NPU RGB+D (a large scale dataset of basketball action recognition with RGB image data and Depth data captured in Northwestern Polytechnical University) for 12 kinds of actions of 10 professional basketball players with 2169 RGB+D videos and 75 thousand frames, including RGB frame sequences, depth maps, and skeleton coordinates. Through extracting the spatial features of the distances and angles between the joint points of basketball players, we created a new feature-enhanced skeleton-based method called LSTM-DGCN for basketball player action recognition based on the deep graph convolutional network (DGCN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) methods. Many advanced action recognition methods were evaluated on our dataset and compared with our proposed method. The experimental results show that the NPU RGB+D dataset is very competitive with the current action recognition algorithms and that our LSTM-DGCN outperforms the state-of-the-art action recognition methods in various evaluation criteria on our dataset. Our action classifications and this NPU RGB+D dataset are valuable for basketball player action recognition techniques. The feature-enhanced LSTM-DGCN has a more accurate action recognition effect, which improves the motion expression ability of the skeleton data.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been used to treat sustained pain that is intractable despite various types of treatment. However, conventional tonic waveform SCS has not shown promising outcomes for spinal cord injury (SCI) or postamputation pain. The pain signal mechanisms of burst waveforms are different to those of conventional tonic waveforms, but few reports have presented the therapeutic potential of burst waveforms for the abovementioned indications. This current case report describes two patients with refractory upper limb pain after SCI and upper limb amputation that were treated with burst waveform SCS. While the patients could not obtain sufficient therapeutic effect with conventional tonic waveforms, the burst waveforms provided better pain reduction with less discomfort. However, further studies are necessary to better clarify the mechanisms and efficacy of burst waveform SCS in patients with intractable pain.
