In this paper, the performances of all the three kinds of Axial type Multi-Pole Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSG) namely Three-phase, Multi-phase or Five Phase and Double Stator fixed in Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) were investigated and compared in order to get an optimal system. MATLAB/Simulink had been used to model and simulate the wind turbine system together with all the three types Permanent Magnet Generators. It was observed from the result that with the increasing number of pole in both low and high wind speed, the five phase generator produced more power than the other two generators. In general, it was observed that the responses of the Multi-phase generator at both high and low speed wind showed promising aspect towards the system followed by Dual Stator. But with the change of the variables such as wind velocity, turbine height, radius, area together with the generator pole pairs and stator resistance, the optimum system should be chosen by considering the trade-off between different configurations which were firmly analyzed and described in this paper.

The future trend of wind energy conversion systems is to draw the maximum power from the available wind. Unfortunately this is not possible with high capacity wind turbine, as they can be rotated only for a particular speed. The wind turbine system stated here is a 3.2 KW wind turbine which is allowed to rotate at any speed to grab the maximum power from the available wind. The size of the wind turbine system is small, as a result they can be placed on the roof tops and de-regulation of power can be done. This wind turbine system provides a three phase variable frequency AC voltage and this variable frequency AC is converted into constant three phase 230V AC by using the converter and inverter systems.

This paper presents a 300W AC/DC/AC power converter for wind energy system. Magnetic Levitation Vertical Axis Wind Turbine is used to harness energy at low wind speed of less than 3 m/s which is suitable for residential area in Malaysia. Three phase voltage produces by wind turbine is rectified using three phase rectifier. A boost converter is employed to convert the rectified DC voltage to a higher level. The output stage consists of full bridge circuit that produces a sinusoidal AC voltage using SPWM switching technique for common AC loads. When operating in rated condition, this system reduces 300W of energy consumption from utility.
