The issue of cordierite-mullite refractories protection from the influence of aggressive factors is considered. The interaction between the components of protective coatings has been studied. It has been investigated that in the systems based on poly(methylphenylsiloxane) filled with magnesium oxide, alumina and quartz sand, the synthesis of cordierite (2MgO•2Al2O3•5SiO2), mullite (3Al2O3•2SiO2) or magnesium aluminate spinel (MgO•Al2O3) is possible. The basic composition of the protective coating, which can be recommended for the protection of cordierite-mullite refractory, is proposed.

The conservation of historic stone buildings and sculptures is receiving growing attention because of weathering. Now, the techniques for stone conservation are primarily achieved through the use of organic coating treatments. Although some defects of organic protective materials have been recognized, the further shortcoming is still short of awareness. Here we show our investigations of the side effect of organic coating treatments. Some kinds of common stones, including sandstone, tuff, granite, dolomite and marble, were selected as protected objects. Organic silicon compounds were used as protective coatings. The artificial weathering, including salting, freezing and heating, was designed. The treated stones’ decaying was investigated. The results reveal that the treated stone decaying is aggravated. Moreover, the destruction mechanism has been discussed.

Specimens were prepared using iron-rich magnesia (3~1 mm、≤1 mm) and high purity magnesia (≤0.088 mm) as the main starting materials, adding tabular alumina at different size (3~2、2~1、≤1 mm) and content:3%、6%、9%、12%、15% to discover the influence of tabular alumina on sample performance. Phase composition and microstructure were also analyzed. The results show that specimen with content of 6% of corundum possessed the best comprehensive performance:apparent porosity 17%, bulk density 2.95 g·cm-3, cold crushing strength 74 MPa, refractoriness under load 1700 °C, heat shock resistance of up to 18 times. The formations of magnesium aluminate spinel and hercynite solid solution were enhanced by Fe ion at high temperatures in the iron-rich magnesia-corundum system at the presence of iron oxides, which are able to largely dissolved in periclase.
