MgAl2O4-SiC Composites were prepared by using magnesium aluminate spinel and silicon carbide powder as starting materials and the sintering mechanism was investigated at 1600°C in reduction atmosphere. Sintered samples were analyzed using XRD, SEM and EDS. The results show that Alumina-rich spinel and SiCN are formed due to the reactions between spinel and SiC. Weight loss of samples was detected due to SiO formation and volatilization. The bulk density of samples decreases and apparent porosity increases as increasing the content of SiC.

The effects of varying the additions of magnesium aluminate spinel (0, 3, 6, 9, 12 wt. %) on the physical properties and slag resistance of Al2O3-SiC-C based castables were investigated. The composition of the specimens was determined by X-Ray diffraction (XRD). The results revealed that the incorporation of appropriate amount of MgAl2O4 in Al2O3-SiC-C based castables could promote the sintering of the specimens, decrease apparent porosity, and improve bulk density and strength. The slag resistance of the castables was improved due to an increase in the viscosity of molten slag, caused by the solid solution of Fe2+ or Fe3+ ions from the molten slag in MgAl2O4. However, further addition would led to a decrease in slag resistance because much Mg2SiO4 was produced.

The issue of cordierite-mullite refractories protection from the influence of aggressive factors is considered. The interaction between the components of protective coatings has been studied. It has been investigated that in the systems based on poly(methylphenylsiloxane) filled with magnesium oxide, alumina and quartz sand, the synthesis of cordierite (2MgO•2Al2O3•5SiO2), mullite (3Al2O3•2SiO2) or magnesium aluminate spinel (MgO•Al2O3) is possible. The basic composition of the protective coating, which can be recommended for the protection of cordierite-mullite refractory, is proposed.

Magnesium aluminate (MA) spinel is synthesized by reaction sintering from alumina and magnesia. The effects of mechanical activation of Al2O3 on reaction sintering were investigated. Non-milled a - Al2O3 and a - Al2O3 high-energy ball milled for 12h, 24h and 36h were mixed with a MgO analytical reagent according to the stoichiometric MA ratio, respectively and pressed into billets with diameters of 20mm and height of 15mm. The green-body billets were then sintered at high temperature in an air atmosphere. The results show that bulk density, relative content of MA and grain size of MA increase with increasing high-energy ball milling time of Al2O3. However prolonged milling time over 24h has a small beneficial effect on the densification of MA. Bulk density and grain size of a sample of a- Al2O3 milled for 24h are 3.30g/cm3 and 4-5 mm, respectively.
