ABSTRACT Maintaining proper tire inflation is the number one issue facing commercial fleets today. Common, slow-leaking tread area punctures along with leaking valve stems and osmosis through the tire casing lead to tire underinflation with a subsequent loss in fuel economy, reduction in retreadability, tread wear loss, irregular wear, and increase in tire-related roadside service calls. Commercial truck tires are the highest maintenance cost for fleets second only to fuel. This article will examine tire footprint analysis, rolling resistance data, and the effect on vehicle fuel economy from tires run at a variety of underinflated, overinflated, and recommended tire pressures. This analysis will also include the tire footprint impact by running tires on both fully loaded and unloaded trailers. The footprint analysis addresses both standard dual tires (295/75R22.5) along with the newer increasingly popular wide-base tire size 445/50R22.5.

Background and Aim: With an increase in demands about reliability of industrial machines following continuous or discrete distribution, the important thing to be noticed is that in all previous researches where systems are having more than one failure no iteration technique has been studied to separate the failed unit on basis of its failure. Therefore, aim of our paper is to analyze the real industrial discrete problem following cold standby units arranged in parallel manner with newly concept of inspection procedure for failed units to inspect the exact failure and being communicator to the repairman for repairing exact failed part of unit for saving time and maintenance cost. Methods: The geometric distribution and regenerative techniques had been applied for calculating different reliability measures like mean time to system failure, availability of a system, inspection, repair and failed time of unit. Results: Graphical and analytical study had also been done to analyze the increasing/decreasing behavior of profit function w.r.t repair and failure rate. The system responded properly in fulfilling his basic needs. Conclusion: The calculated value of all reliability parameter is helpful for studying any other models following same concept under different environmental conditions. Thus, it concluded that, reliability increases/decreases with increase in repair/failure rate. Also, the evaluated results by this paper provides the better reliability testing strategies that helps to develop new techniques which leads to increase the effectiveness of system.

In recent years, Nigeria’s power generation output from all the available energy sources such as coal, natural gas, and water, is far from the expected number required to meet the energy demand of her teeming populace. This culminates in long hours of power outages frequently experienced in many parts of the country. However, there appears to be no end in sight to the problem. Alternatively, few citizens who can afford generator have wittingly resulted to the use of this device to supply power. Generator set has unavoidable disadvantages of high maintenance or running cost, noise pollution, and release of dangerous gases that pose danger to human lives. Evidently, that solution is risky and inadequate. Power inverter is an alternative and better means of generating electricity with little or no maintenance cost, environment or eco- friendly and poses no risk to human health. It is in that connection that we develop in this work 2KVA sine wave inversion system which produces sinusoidal A.C. signal required in homes for lightning and powering electronic gadgets like television, radio, refrigerator, Air conditioner etc. It is an improvement over square wave and modified sine wave inversion systems that generate digital approximations of A.C. signal. An interesting but new addition is the use of LCD display, interfaced with PIC16F688 microcontroller for showing the design specifications of the inverter.

Purpose The maintenance department of today, like many other departments, is under sustained pressure to slash costs, show outcome and support the assignment of the organization, as it is a commonsensical prospect from the business perspective. The purpose of this paper is to examine expected maintenance waste reduction benefits in the maintenance of organizations after the implementation of just-in-time (JIT) managerial philosophy. For this, a structured questionnaire was designed and sent to the 421 industries in India. Design/methodology/approach The designed questionnaire was divided into two sections A and B to assist data interpretation. The aim of the section A was to build general information of participants, type of organization, number of employees, annual turnover of the organization, etc. Section B was also a structured questionnaire developed based on a five-point Likert scale. The identified critical elements of the JIT were included in the questionnaire to identify the maintenance waste reduction benefits in the maintenance of organizations. Findings On the basis of the 133 responses, hypothesis testing was done with the help of Z-test, and it was found out that in maintenance, we can reduce a large inventory of spare parts and also shorten the excessive maintenance activities due to the implementation of JIT philosophy. All the four wastes: waste of processing; waste of rejects/rework/scrap in case of poor maintenance; waste of the transport of spares, and waste of motion, have approximately equal weightage in their reduction. Waste of waiting for spares got the last rank, which showed that there are little bit chances in the reduction of waiting for spares after the implementation of JIT philosophy in maintenance. Practical implications The implication of the research findings for maintenance of organizations is that if maintenance practitioners implement elements of JIT philosophy in maintenance then there will be a great reduction in the maintenance wastes. Originality/value This paper will be abundantly useful for the maintenance professionals, researchers and others concerned with maintenance to understand the significance of JIT philosophy implementation to get the expected reduction benefits in maintenance wastes of organizations which will be helpful in the great saving of maintenance cost and time side by side great increment in the availability of machines.

This paper studies the availability and optimal maintenance policies for systems subject to competing failure modes under continuous and periodic inspections. The repair time distribution and maintenance cost are both dependent on the failure modes. We investigate the instantaneous availability and the steady state availability of the system maintained through several imperfect repairs before a replacement is allowed. Analytical expressions for system availability under continuous and periodic inspections are derived respectively. The availability models are then utilized to obtain the optimal inspection and imperfect maintenance policy that minimizes the average long-run cost rate. A numerical example for Remote Power Feeding System is presented to demonstrate the application of the developed approach.

Adequate provision of affordable human settlements is a huge challenge in South Africa since its independence. This paper investigates the effects of the cost increase of building materials on affordable housing delivery in South Africa. With potential solutions for cost minimisation of building materials, with the aim of achieving affordable housing delivery in South Africa are provided. This study uses a sequential mixed methods approach, wherein surveys were conducted among the construction professionals (project managers, site managers architects, site engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors, building materials suppliers, and government workers) in the construction industry within Cape Town, South Africa, who were considered as the research participants. The qualitative data obtained from the survey exercise were analysed using content analysis, while the quantitative data were analysed using a descriptive statistical technique on SPSS. The findings attained show fluctuation in construction cost and a rise in maintenance cost (caused by poor workmanship) as significant effects in the cost increase of building materials for affordable housing delivery. Adequate application of the recommendations given in this study will minimise the effects of high cost of building materials and enhance affordable housing delivery. Appropriate handling of the findings given in this study will reduce the effects of the high cost of building materials and augment timely delivery of affordable housing and stakeholders’ satisfaction.
