Coal mining activities in South Sumatra are among others carried out by PT. Bukit Asam tbk, a coal company located in Tanjung Enim. The open pit/cast mining process has a negative impact on the environment, some of the impacts are land degradation, loss of vegetation, changes in microclimate and loss of biodiversity which includes diversity of flora and fauna, one of which is amphibians. One of the efforts to maintain and preserve environmental capabilities is to reclaim former mines. In accordance with Law No. 4 of 2009 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining requires mining companies to carry out reclamation and post-mining activities over the areas they cultivate. Reclamation-revegetation activities are efforts to improve microclimate conditions, improve soil fertility conditions. The recovery of environmental conditions is expected to bring back the wildlife that has been lost. The amphibian community is believed to be a bioindicator of the recovery of environmental conditions undergoing habitat changes. The research was carried out at the Bukit Asam coal mine reclamation area, Air laya site from February to March. The aim of the study was to see the types of amphibians found in the mine reclamation area. Sampling was carried out using the VES (Visual Enconter Survey) method. From the results obtained, there were 3 species from 2 members of the Order (Anura) and 2 members of the Family (Rinidae).

In Mohoni Village, East Petasia District, North Morowali Regency there are nickel mining activities that are carried out by PT. Asiamax Mining Indonesia. Several locations were mine out status. Hence, reclamation programs are made to improve environmental conditions before mining. One of these stages is water quality tests to ensure that the reclamation area is worthy to be a habitat for animals and plants. The purpose of this study is to find out the water quality in the reclamation area of the ex-nickel mining in Mohoni Village. The storet method is used to analyze water quality whose test parameters include pH, total suspanded solid (TSS), concentrations of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), chromium valence 6, iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and cobalt (Co) once every three months for a year. The quality water check results are compared with the environmental quality standards in accordance with law number 32 of 2009. Based on the average monitoring results show that the water quality is classified as moderately polluted. The conclusion from this study is that reclamation land might be not used as habitat for animals and plants because the availability of water is not suitable for consumption

Coal is one of the most mining commodities to date, especially to supply both national and international energy needs. Coal mining activities that are not well managed will have an impact on the occurrence of environmental damage. This research tried to utilize the multitemporal Landsat data to analyze the land damage caused by coal mining activities. The research took place at several coal mine sites in East Kalimantan Province. The method developed in this research is the method of change detection. The study tried to know the land damage caused by mining activities using NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), NDSI (Normalized Difference Soil Index), NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index) and GEMI (Global Environment Monitoring Index) parameter based change detection method. The results showed that coal mine area along with the damage that occurred in it can be detected from multitemporal Landsat data using NDSI value-based change detection method. The area damage due to coal mining activities  can be classified into high, moderate, and low classes based on the mean and standard deviation of NDSI changes (ΔNDSI). The results of this study are expected to be used to support government efforts and mining managers in post-mining land reclamation activities.

Coal mining is accompanied by the release of coal mine methane. Its emissions into the atmosphere within methane-air mixture have a negative impact on the ecological situation. The modern approach involves the use of methane-air-mixture for heat boilers or units to generate electricity. For the generation of heat and electrical energy the coal mine methane could be used in cogeneration gas turbine plants with an altered sequence of processes. Thermo — and gas dynamics studies were conducted in a wide range of parameters of gas turbine plants. For small power plants recommended are: 2.8 compression ratio, turbine inlet — 1173 K, gas cooler inlet temperature — 303 K, 0.8 regeneration ratio. In this case the electrical efficiency of gas turbine plant is 25–26% and even 63–64% if produced heat is counted. Cogeneration gas turbine plant with an altered sequence of process has smaller capital and operating costs compared to traditional gas turbine unit. The use of methane-air mixture as fuel in such gas turbine units increases the profitability of coal mining and improves the ecological situation in the region.
