Four major crops rice, maize, wheat and tomato were examined in the Kano River Irrigation Project. The project was divided into 3 sections; the head, middle and tail ends. One hundred farmers were randomly selected from each sections making a total of 300 hundred farmers. Net farm income, and profitability index were used to assess the profitability of the enterprises. It was concluded Rice, maize, and wheat were profitable while tomato was unprofitable that year attributable to market glut and perishability of the crop. It was recommended that storage facilities be provided by both private and government agencies to curtail the losses incurred by the farmers.

The study was conducted at Ashuganj-Polash agro-irrigation project (APAIP), Brahmanbaria,aim to determine the chemical properties of power plant disposal water and to assess its suitability for irrigation. Initial soil samples (before irrigating crop field) and final soil samples (after crop harvesting) were collected. During irrigation ten water samples (six from crop field and four from irrigation canals) were collected for analysis. All soil samples were analyzed in Humboldt soil testing laboratory and water samples in bio-chemistry laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University and compared to FAO irrigation standard. Results show thatthe sodium absorption ratio (SAR) (0.53 to 0.88), residual sodium bi-carbonate (0.8 to 1.3meq L-1), Kelly’s ratio (0.31 to 0.6) and total hardness (85 to 150) found in normal range and largely suitable for irrigation. Soluble sodium percentage values found in satisfactory (20.26 to 41.1) level and magnesium absorption (57.1 to 76.4) found unsuitable for irrigation. Statistically similar value of pH, EC, total nitrogen, organic carbon, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in initial and final soil sample were observed. But potassium and sulfur value reduced in final soil sample from initial soil. The water samples fall within the permissible limit and found suitable for crop production

Present paper has been focused on the changing aspects of paddy cultivation of Chakratir the VDC, Lamjung district after the implementation of Rain star Irrigation Project (RIP). The RIP is confined in 7 wards of the VDC, where only 3 and 4 wards are not covered. The study of changing scenario of paddy cultivation after the completion of RIP has been mainly based on the primary data. The study has found that various crops such as paddy, maize and millet were grown almost equally in the study area before the availability of irrigation facility. Due to the availability of irrigation facility, the crop production has been moved towards paddy cultivation. Paddy has become the most important crop for consumption and income. AbstractThe most useful and practical strategy available for reducing variability of net farm income is ascertained. Of the many risk management tools presently available, five of the most commonly used are simultaneously incorporated in an empirically tested model. Quadratic programming provides the basis for decisionmaking in risk management wherein expected utility is assumed to be a function of the mean and variance of net income. Results demonstrate that farmers can reduce production and price risks when a combination strategy including a diversified crop production plan and participation in the futures market and the Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP) is implemented.

Poor rainfall in 1972 and 1973 led to much of the area in the Sudan Savanna zone of Nigeria being declared a disaster area due to the widespread failures of major food crops under indigenous practices. However, in the same circumstances, a group of farmers using improved seed, fertilizer and better methods, obtained yields which were satisfactory. Crop losses from “drought” are a strong function of the cultivars grown and of the level of crop husbandry.

A case study is presented on labour productivity of 30 farmers living in a village in Northern Nigeria, a region with a relatively high population density of 500-600 persons per square mile. An adult male worker can provide the labour needs of about 4.5 acres of farm land during the growing season, but in this village only 1.5 acres per worker was available. An initial estimation of labour productivity, based on a general survey, led to the conclusion that marginal productivity approached zero. However, this conclusion appears to be erroneous, as a consequence of incorrect assessment of time spent on actual crop production by farmers. According to a detailed investigation on five farms, the number of man days per acre spent on crop production was remarkably uniform - about 19 man days per acre regardless of size of holding. This, in connection with other evidence, suggests that the marginal productivity of labour in this village is not zero and does not even approach zero. Descriptive Statistics and Net Farm Income model was used to analyze data collected from 120 Arable Farmers who adopted various cropping patterns in Niger State, Nigeria. The study specifically examined the socio-economic characteristics of arable farmers, profile the cropping patterns adopted, examined the profitability and highlighted the constraints to crop production among arable farmers in the study area. Results obtained from the study show that crop farming in the area is a male dominated. The mean age of farmers was 33years, 98.3% were married, 80.8% had one form of education or the other and 68.4% adopted a three-crop mix pattern in their crop production. Two and three crop mixes enterprise were profitable than sole cropping when gross income per ha was used as an index of profitability. Profitability was higher in single crop enterprise when returns/man day was used as an index but was higher in a two and three crop mix enterprise when net returns per ha was used as a measure of profitability. Bad roads, drought, theft of farm produce, poor extension per farm advisory services and lack of credit facilities respectively were the constraint to crop production. The study concludes that mixed cropping enterprises was more profitable than sole cropping. We recommend the promotion of mixed cropping among arable farmers for increased profitability and income to farm households, that the constraints identified be addressed by all concerned authorities so as to sustain crop production, reduce food insecurity and eradicate hunger and poverty among arable farmers in the area and Nigeria as a whole.

"The objectives are to determine adequacy of present storage facilities by Crop Reporting Districts and to provide information for decisions relative to location, capacity, type, remodeling, and rebuilding of country elevator storage facilities in conjunction with the present trends in marketing techniques. The data collected pertain to the nine Crop Reporting Districts of the state and the country elevators within those districts. See Figure 1 for the location of the nine districts. Decisions relative to location, capacity, type of new storage, and marketing facilities are being made currently and likely will continue to be made over the next ten year. The need to increase arable crop production to keep pace with food demands for a growing population without degrading ecosystems can only be achieved through adoption of agroforestry. Agroforestry practices help to achieve food security, biodiversity, conservation and land sustainability. The 94 famers were chosen using a multistage sampling process. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Most (74%) of respondents practiced home gardening. The significant benefits derived from agroforestry were; food/fruits (97%) and soil improvement/conservation (88%). The mean adoption index was 0.27. The log-likelihood obtained from Tobit was 67.92 indicating that the independent variables significantly explained the variation in the farmer’s adoption decision. Educational level (β=0.426) and farm experience (β=0.597) were both positive and statistically significant at ρ˂0.05; farm income (β=0.568) was significant at ρ˂0.01, and extension contact (β=-0.887, ρ˂0.01) was negative and had a negative impact on agroforestry adoption. The constraints affecting the practice of agroforestry among arable farmers were; poor policies, inadequate extension services, insufficient improved tree species among others. The study recommends intensification of extension services and provision of incentives to farmers to promote agroforestry adoption to achieve increased food production and sustainable land-use systems.
