To investigate the internal consistency reliability and three types of validity of the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE), a survey was conducted among 209 English schoolteachers in Japan. The Japanese version of the COPE Inventory was developed through a back-translation process. Cronbach coefficients alpha for the Japanese version were above .70 for all subscalcs except five, including Acceptance and Restraint, so internal consistencies for these five were insufficient. Goodness of fit indexes for a confirmatory factor analysis were acceptable except for the Comparative Fit Index. Scores on COPE subscales were significantly correlated with scores on other tests (29 of 75 correlations were in the expected directions). Further exploration is required for several subscales and for generalization to Japanese-speaking populations in careers other than teaching to ensure the Japanese version of the COPE will be useful in assessing coping strategics. Given the limitations, present data for Japanese teachers are encouraging.

Purpose: Self-transcendence, the ability to expand personal boundaries in multiple ways, has been found to provide well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine the dimensionality of the Norwegian version of the Self-Transcendence Scale, which comprises 15 items. Background: Reed’s empirical nursing theory of self-transcendence provided the theoretical framework; self-transcendence includes an interpersonal, intrapersonal, transpersonal, and temporal dimension. Design: Cross-sectional data were obtained from a sample of 202 cognitively intact elderly patients in 44 Norwegian nursing homes. Results: Exploratory factor analysis revealed two and four internally consistent dimensions of self-transcendence, explaining 35.3% (two factors) and 50.7% (four factors) of the variance, respectively. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the hypothesized two- and four-factor models fitted better than the one-factor model (c x2, root mean square error of approximation, standardized root mean square residual, normed fit index, nonnormed fit index, comparative fit index, goodness-of-fit index, and adjusted goodness-of-fit index). Conclusions: The findings indicate self-transcendence as a multifactorial construct; at present, we conclude that the two-factor model might be the most accurate and reasonable measure of self-transcendence. Implications: This research generates insights in the application of the widely used Self-Transcendence Scale by investigating its psychometric properties by applying a confirmatory factor analysis. It also generates new research-questions on the associations between self-transcendence and well-being.

The purpose of this article is to adapt and validate the short form of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI-SF) in Spanish. The scale consists of 10 items distributed in 5 posttraumatic growth dimensions measured in the original instrument. The psychometric properties and dimensionality of the scale are examined in a sample of college students (N = 681). Results lend support to the validity and reliability (α = .83) of the PTGI-SF. The dimensions of PTGI-SF show correlations ranging between .29 and .52. In addition, the inventory correlates significantly with deliberate rumination (r = .39) and the search for meaning in life (r = .32). The factor loadings of the items in the confirmatory factor analysis varied between .52 and .87, showing good fit indexes (comparative fit index = .97, Tucker-Lewis index = .93, relative fit index = .90, incremental fit index = .97, normed fit index = .96, and root mean square error of approximation = .05). Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis supported invariance of the PTGI-SF across the 2 groups. Finally, significantly higher PTGI-SF scores were observed in subjects who were actively looking for meaning in life, or had found it after a seeking process, than in subjects who had not looked for meaning in life or had given up because they had not been successful.

Background: This study aims to develop a valid measurement of the Frommel Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying (FATCOD) scale to address some of the gaps in the existing knowledge of this field in Vietnam. Methods: The FATCOD scale was translated and culturally adapted to make it suitable for use in Vietnam. Following this, the FATCOD_VN scale was assessed for content validity. The construct validity of the instrument was then determined by exploratory factor analysis (n=237), and confirmatory factor analysis (n=245), based on the combined data from two cross-sectional studies. The internal consistency reliability and background factors associated with the FATCOD_VN were examined to further support the validity of the Vietnamese version. Results: The exploratory factor analysis of the FATCOD_VN yielded a three-factor structure that presents the most plausible goodness of fit, supported by confirmatory factor analysis. The Cronbach's alpha of the FATCOD_VN was 0.74 for overall scale and ranges from 0.56 to 0.81 for each sub-scale. Conclusions: The study results indicate that the FATCOD_VN is acceptable and appropriate to use in the Vietnamese context.

Background and Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze the factor structure and the reliability of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the Burn Specific Health Scale—Revised (BSHS-R) in a sample of Brazilian burned adults. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study. The internal consistency was analyzed using Cronbach’s α, considering coefficients ≥.70 as appropriate. We conducted confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to test the hypothesis that the BSHS-R Brazilian-Portuguese version has a factor structure similar to the original. We assessed the factor structure of the BSHS-R Brazilian-Portuguese version by CFA, examining three models: three-factor, six-factor, and seven-factor structure. Results: The participants were 299 burned adults. The CFA indicated good model fit indices for the seven-factor model (root mean square error of approximation = .062; goodness-of-fit index = .844; adjusted goodness-of-fit index = .809; Akaike information criterion = 1,054.06). The seven-factor BSHS-R Brazilian-Portuguese version showed Cronbach’s α of .93. Conclusions: The BSHS-R Brazilian-Portuguese version with seven factors is reliable and valid and measures the perceived health status construct.
