Abstract The primary object of study is the “cosine-sine” functional equation f(xy) = f(x)g(y)+g(x)f(y)+h(x)h(y) for unknown functions f, g, h : S → ℂ, where S is a semigroup. The name refers to the fact that it contains both the sine and cosine addition laws. This equation has been solved on groups and on semigroups generated by their squares. Here we find the solutions on a larger class of semigroups and discuss the obstacles to finding a general solution for all semigroups. Examples are given to illustrate both the results and the obstacles. We also discuss the special case f(xy) = f(x)g(y) + g(x)f(y) − g(x)g(y) separately, since it has an independent direct solution on a general semigroup. We give the continuous solutions on topological semigroups for both equations.

AbstractIn this paper, a special case of Schröder's functional equation is solved. Then, the general solution of the equation is utilized to determine the class of distributions by their α-quantile past lifetime function.

The object of this paper is to determine the general solution of the functional equationFEwhere α is multiplicative. It turns out that non-trivial embeddings of the reals in the complex generate some interesting solutions. In many applications, various special cases of (FE) have occurred ([1,3, 4, 6, 10, 11, 14]). The special case where f = g = h = k and α = the identity map is known as the fundamental equation of information, and has been extensively investigated by many authors ([5]). The case where f = g = h = k and α is multiplicative was treated in [13, 14]. The general solution of (FE) when α(1 – x) = (1 – x)β has been obtained in [9], except when β = 2.

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the general solution and the generalized stability for the quartic, cubic and additive functional equation (briefly, QCA-functional equation) for any k∈ℤ-{0,±1} in Menger probabilistic normed spaces.

We obtain a general solution of the sextic functional equation f (ax+by)+ f (ax-by)+ f (bx+ay)+ f (bx-ay) = (ab)2(a2 + b2)[f(x+y)+f(x-y)] + 2(a2-b2)(a4-b4)[f(x)+f(y)] and investigate the stability of sextic Lie *-derivations associated with the given functional equation via fixed point method. Also, we present a counterexample for a single case.

Abstract  We deal with an alienation problem for an Euler–Lagrange type functional equation $$\begin{aligned} f(\alpha x + \beta y) + f(\alpha x - \beta y) = 2\alpha ^2f(x) + 2\beta ^2f(y) \end{aligned}$$ f ( α x + β y ) + f ( α x - β y ) = 2 α 2 f ( x ) + 2 β 2 f ( y ) assumed for fixed nonzero real numbers $$\alpha ,\beta ,\, 1 \ne \alpha ^2 \ne \beta ^2$$ α , β , 1 ≠ α 2 ≠ β 2 , and the classic quadratic functional equation $$\begin{aligned} g(x+y) + g(x-y) = 2g(x) + 2g(y). \end{aligned}$$ g ( x + y ) + g ( x - y ) = 2 g ( x ) + 2 g ( y ) . We were inspired by papers of Kim et al. (Abstract and applied analysis, vol. 2013, Hindawi Publishing Corporation, 2013) and Gordji and Khodaei (Abstract and applied analysis, vol. 2009, Hindawi Publishing Corporation, 2009), where the special case $$g = \gamma f$$ g = γ f was examined.

AbstractThe quadratic functional equation f(f(x)) *–Tf(x) + Dx = 0 is equivalent to the requirement that the graph be invariant under a certain linear map The induced projective map is used to show that the equation admits a rich supply of continuous solutions only when L is hyperbolic (T2 > 4D), and then only when T and D satisfy certain further conditions. The general continuous solution of the equation is given explicitly in terms of either (a) an expression involving an arbitrary periodic function, function additions, inverses and composites, or(b) suitable limits of such solutions.

In this paper we discuss the flexure of an incomplete tore in the plane of its circular centre-line. We reduce the problem to the determination of two harmonic functions, subject to boundary conditions on the surface of the tore which involve the first two derivatives of the functions. We point out the relation of this solution to the general solution of three-dimensional elasticity problems. The special case of a narrow rectangular cross-section is solved exactly in Appendix II.

A general similarity solution for water-entry problems of a wedge with its inner angle fixed and its sides in expansion is obtained with flow detachment, in which the speed of expansion is a free parameter. The known solutions for a wedge of a fixed length at the initial stage of water entry without flow detachment and at the final stage corresponding to Helmholtz flow are obtained as two special cases, at some finite and zero expansion speeds, respectively. An expanding horizontal plate impacting a flat free surface is considered as the special case of the general solution for a wedge inner angle equal to ${\rm\pi}$. An initial impulse solution for a plate of a fixed length is obtained as the special case of the present formulation. The general solution is obtained in the form of integral equations using the integral hodograph method. The results are presented in terms of free-surface shapes, streamlines and pressure distributions.
