Abstract The study of boundaries is a recurring theme in ecology. However, boundaries have been examined mainly on fine scales (between communities) and on coarse scales (between biomes), while boundaries of intermediate scales (e.g. between community complexes) are quite neglected. In this study, we analysed boundaries between mesic and xeric community complexes in a sub-Mediterranean karst area of South Hungary. We applied the moving split window (MSW) technique for boundary analysis. First, since the behaviour ofMSWconcerning complex vegetation patterns is not fully understood, we prepared artificial datasets (simulated communities) to test its capacities. Second, we established north-south oriented belt transects across mountain ridges of the Villány Mts, and investigated the transition between the community complexes of differently exposed slopes. UsingMSW, we were able clearly to distinguish between transitional zones and zones that do not represent real transitions: peaks in the Z-score profile of MSW merge only in the case of transitional zones. Moreover, we found that peaks merge depending on the independence (distinctness) of the transitional zone: when it is distinct, peaks merge only at the largest window widths. In the Villány Mts, transitions seem to occur mostly in the grasslands north of the ridges. We demonstrated that these grasslands can be regarded as boundaries between mesic and xeric complexes or as zones in their own right, with their own two boundaries. Interpretation depends upon the scale of observation.

This article discusses the urban spaces of the pseudo-colonial city via the urban transformation in the eastern area of Bangkok between 1855 and 1932. During this period, the Thai royal government was under pressure from colonialism in the Southeast Asian region. To prevent colonization of the country, the kings aimed to strengthen their economic and political powers through administrative reform, educational development, infrastructure construction, and land commodification Thus, the urban spaces in Bangkok were significantly transformed. The eastern area became a transitional zone between the administrative center of the royal government and the commercial center where foreign traders resided. Furthermore, this transitional zone continued expanding into the area of rural communities, and, consequently, the traditional settlements of the local people gradually lost population.

Background. Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) has been extensively used to classify pediatric malnutrition. Recently, MUAC z score was recommended; however, the logistics of implementation were not addressed. This study examines the usability of a device that provides MUAC and corresponding z score range in a single device. Methods. This was a single-center study of nutrition services providers. The device was applied to children aged 2 months to 18 years admitted as inpatients or seen as outpatients. Surveys incorporated benchmarking questions, assessed the ease with which respondents could perform 6 critical tasks, and provided an open-ended question to elicit feedback. Users were surveyed monthly until saturation was reached. Survey data were analyzed in aggregate and cross-tabulated by the respondents’ experience with the device. Thematic analysis of the open-ended responses followed a structured approach. Results. Sixty device users responded to the survey 280 times. Respondents were female (100%) with a mean age of 45.2 ± 13.2 years and 9.6 ± 8.0 years in practice. Increasing device use was accompanied by significantly shortened measuring times ( P < .001) and shifts in ease of performance for 5 of 6 critical tasks ( P < .05). Open-ended response themes related largely to design and materials. These were used to iteratively refine the device. Conclusions. The active engagement of end users in the real-world testing of our nutritional assessment device allowed us to refine the innovation with special attention paid to the needs of dietitians. The result is a device the majority of dietitians found easy to use, efficient, convenient, and preferable to alternative measurement options.
