Abstract A ship’s wind energy utilization device with multi-mode arc-shaped sails is designed, which have different working modes for sail-assisting or wind power generation according to the ship’s navigation. The structural characteristics and working principles of this device are firstly described in this paper. Three sets of arc-shaped sails with different thickness (4.5 cm, 11.3 cm, 21.7 cm) were designed. Wind tunnel experiments were carried out in the respects of sail-assisting performance and wind-power generation to determine the best sail blade shape and to verify the energy-saving effect of this device. Experiments show that the sail with the smallest thickness (4.5 cm) has a better boosting effect than others, and the sail with the largest thickness (21.7 cm) has the best wind power generation performance. Considering the lateral force and the structural strength of the support, in the case of the comprehensive evaluation for the boosting and power generation performance, it is considered that the intermediate thickness (11.3 cm) is the best choice. The device has a good comprehensive energy utilization effect and has development and application value.

For the incompletion problem of sensors’ collected data in fault diagnosis of the wind power system, this article puts forward a kind of multiple level rules set based on rough set. First, let the sensors’ collected data go through Fourier transform and extract its feature attributes as well as discrete them. Establish the decision table of fault diagnosis according to attribute values. Then set out from the decision table to establish a multiple level set of nodes with diverse reduced levels and deduce the rules of each node, which has a corresponding belief level. When in reasoning and decision-making of the new data using the multiple level rules set, match the information of the new data with the rule of its corresponding node. Finally, achieve the fault diagnosis of wind power generation system by choosing comprehensive evaluation algorithm. The result of the diagnosis example shows the reliability and accuracy of this method in the diagnosis of fault types for wind power generation system.

A solar updraft tower is one of the wind power generation plants which utilizes solar energy. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the tower was also able to utilize crosswind energy. Wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations were conducted simulating the crosswind. The results showed that suctioned updraft speed in the tower was proportional to the crosswind speed, and its conversion rate depended on the tower configuration. A diffuser-shaped tower with a vortex generator achieved to produce the updraft whose speed exceeded the crosswind speed. It was due to the low pressure created by the vortex atop the tower and to the diffuser effect. The crosswind utilization enables the simple power generation device to generate electricity during the night, and the hybrid utilization of renewable energies contributes to the increasing wind energy market.

With the development of economy, the energy demand is becoming bigger and bigger, the development of wind energy is one of the main ways to solve energy crisis. In terms of energy utilization, high power wind power connected to the grid is currently one of the most effective ways of wind energy utilization. The wind power generation system connected to the grid plays the role of the changing wind energy into mechanical energy by wind turbines, and then converts mechanical energy into electrical energy by a generator. Because CSCF wind turbine works with the gearbox, which is low efficiency, noise and mechanical loss. And it has not been able to meet the needs of the times. Therefore, the direct drive wind power technology capable of tracking the maximal power point of wind power at rated wind speed has become one of the hot spots in the present research. This paper introduces the converter of the direct drive wind power system and analyzes the working principle of the direct driven permanent magnet synchronous wind power system.
