ABSTRACTAISI 316L stainless steel substrates were coated with hydroxyapatite [HAp, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2]-seeded 58S bioglass, and then their in vitro bioactivity was evaluated by soaking in a simulated body fluid (SBF). The bioglass was prepared via the sol-gel technique and nanometric HAp single crystals were obtained by hydrothermal synthesis. The coatings had bioglass/HAp weight ratios of 100/0, 90/10 or 80/20. The in vitro bioactivity tests were carried out under static conditions at 37 °C and pH = 7.25, for time periods ranging from 1 to 21 days. The results showed that the HAp-seeding significantly accelerates the formation of a HAp layer at the bioglass-coated steel surface during the bioactivity tests.

ABSTRACTPb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 (PZT) films have been fabricated on stainless steel substrates by a Polyvinylpirrolidone (PVP) modified sol-gel route. The single layer of about 0.26 μm was achieved by using the PVP-modified PZT sol, and Crack-free PZT films with thickness of up to 2.37 μm were fabricated by repeating the deposition process. The variations in crystallite orientation, microstructure, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of PZT films were investigated as a function of film thickness. Our results indicate that PZT films prepared on stainless steel substrates maintain good dielectric and ferroelectric properties.

ZrO2-CeO2 thin film was successfully prepared on 316L stainless steel by sol-gel process and the corrosion characteristics of the substrate coated with ZrO2-CeO2 thin film were evaluated through potentiodynamic polarization curve obtained in deaerated 15% H2SO4. The results show that, with the increase of CeO2 content, the corrosion rate of 316L stainless steel substrates coated with ZrO2-CeO2 thin film decreases. The surface morphology of the coating was observed by field scanning electron microscopy and the elements in the surface of coated substrate analyzed by FEM-EDX.
