Abstract Evaluation of report-based assignments, especially in larger classes, adds a considerable marking load. Even with detailed rubrics, subjectivity may lead to grading variations and inaccuracies. Evaluation of others’ work can also be a very informative and educational experience, improving their skill through exposure to a broader performance range. Involving students in peer evaluation can potentially address both of these issues by reducing marking load, providing alternate (and increased number of) assessments, and by exposing students to a broader spectrum of report skills thus enhancing their own knowledge. This paper discusses the results of an experiment in peer assessment and whether it can be exploited to reduce marking effort, improve accuracy for report assignment evaluation and improve student skill. The data was gathered from assignments in two different engineering classes: a second year course on safety and environmental stewardship, and a senior course on engineering economics. For the second-year course, an individual essay assignment was marked by the instructor and two peers.  The three evaluations were analyzed to assess the accuracy and assign a grade. For the senior course, a group report on a case study was self and peer evaluated.  These evaluations were used to derive a grade for the report directly if the self and peer results were within a prescribed tolerance; other cases were resolved by instructor intervention. The results were analyzed considering the number of outliers, range of scores, and the number of cases which had to be resolved by theinstructor. Parameters considered in assessing the results of the experiment included: the correlation between assessments, the learning opportunities for students, and instructor marking effort required. (preliminary analysis) Results suggest positive gains in reducing effort.  Improved accuracy and enhanced student learning are also expected.

Teaching research to undergraduates has its own challenges and involving undergraduates in research practical experience is just one of those challenges. As nursing students are in the process of becoming professional nurses, knowledge and skills in research are specific outcomes of the curriculum. One of the outcomes of the B Tech Nursing Science programme offered by the Tshwane University of Technology states that for the baccalaurcate nursing programme include analysis, interpretation and utilisation of a range of research findings in scientific nursing and midwifery care as well as the development of a research protocol in a given context. In an effort to ensure that students would experience research as an essential part of their daily activities, an integrated approach is suggested whereby the nursing experiential learning opportunities are also research experiential learning opportunities. Using the integration strategy, research theory come ‘alive’ for the students. The integration approach is uncomplicated and transferable to any other discipline. The case study presented is the second year nursing students using school nursing experiential learning as a research project. The second year nursing students have a community focus during their second year and one of the experiential learning opportunities is school health nursing in a primary school in Tshwane. The results of the school health survey are presented. The students developed a health education intervention based on the research results.

In order to develop the skills and competences required in a professional environment, university students have to reflect on their own role in the learning process. The traditional methods of assessment do not assess reflective thinking, critical thinking, self-evaluation and peer evaluation. Peer assessment may be a way to solve this problem. In this paper, it is researched how peer assessment could be applied to higher education and the effect of using this form of assessment on the quality of learning. The methodology to investigate the effect of peer assessment as a part of the learning process includes literature observation, case study, developing protocols and marking criteria rules for peer assessment, examples of peer assessment strategies and activities. The results of the research demonstrate that peer assessment methods of either written or oral performance can trigger a deeper involvement of students both in the learning and in the assessment process, keep motivation up and develop some qualities essential for future professional life. Therefor peer assessment could be effectively integrated in the course of ESP at the Moscow Higher School of Economics.

There are many factors that can lead to internship satisfaction. Working environment is one of the factors that will result to such outcome. However, many organizations discarded the fact of its importance. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a significant relationship between working environment and internship satisfaction level as well as to determine whether the dimensions of working environment significantly affect internship satisfaction. The said dimensions are, learning opportunities, supervisory support, career development opportunities, co-workers support, organization satisfaction, working hours and esteem needs. A total of 111 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents and were processed by SPSS program to obtain the result of this study. The results reveal that learning opportunities, career development opportunities, organization satisfaction and esteem needs are factors that contribute to internship satisfaction level. In the other hand, supervisory support, co-workers support and working hours are factors that lead to internship dissatisfaction. The result also shows that organization satisfaction is the strongest factor that affects internship satisfaction while co-workers support is the weakest.

AbstractThe roles of interaction have been studied for several decades. Recent studies have turned to investigate “the details of which components of interaction might be more or less effective in which contexts with which learners” (Loewen, Shawn & Masatoshi Sato. 2018. Interaction and instructed second language acquisition. Language Teaching 51(3). 285–329: 286). This case study, based on three unstructured interactions outside the classroom between two L2 Mandarin Chinese learners, investigates the learning opportunities these interactions brought about in terms of helping them to increase in control over forms that had already been encountered inside the classroom. Using the concept of the language-related episode (Swain, Merrill & Sharon Lapkin. 1998. Interaction and second language learning: Two adolescent French immersion students working together. The Modern Language Journal 82(3). 320–337), this study sets focus on learning opportunities for lexis- and grammar-related items. It finds learning opportunities arise as the two peers negotiate for meaning motivated by the need to comprehend, strive to use the L2 to express/co-express themselves, and improve their form through the other’s feedback. In addition, lexis-related learning is found to be very positive in this study. The dictionary played an indispensable role in facilitating the learners when they encountered lexis-related issues. Further, it enabled the learners to learn new vocabulary when driven by communicative needs. In comparison, the grammar-related learning is found to be relatively complicated. And the fact the learners had nowhere to resort to concerning grammatical issues attributed to it. In terms of the different types of interactions, compared to learning through negotiation for meaning and feedback, output and co-construction/collaboration were found to be most productive in promoting the learning.

This paper reports the validity of the hypothesis that giving and receiving peer feedback during studio critique supports the assumption that the nature of feedback affects student learning and student perceptions of the quality of the learning experience. The research question is whether peer feedback operated under studio pedagogy has the potential of enhancing quality learning. The purpose of this study is to examine student perceptions of peer feedback in a studio-based learning environment. This is a case study where data was collected qualitatively. This study clearly demonstrates the positive perceptions of peer feedback held by design students and the influence these perceptions have on students’ learning outcomes.

This study intended to demonstrate the significant differences between conference and peer evaluation on writing skill of EFL learners in Pooyesh Language House of Bandar Lengeh. To find out the differences, two types of tests (pre- test before treatment and receiving feedback, post- test after treatment and receiving feedback) were given to two groups of students (30 students for conference and 30 students for peer evaluation). The participants were all teen and adult students who were studying at the same level in this Language House. The writing tests were taken from their previous books which they had practiced before. The pre-test was given to students. In conference group, a mark was given to them by their teacher and during the term the students learned how to write through their teachers comments, but in peer evaluation group, through their classmates comments, so in the second group the classmates just checked each others papers and found errors without giving any mark, because they were not familiar with assessment system; it was the teacher task. In the first group, the teacher was familiar with assessment system, but in peer evaluation group the students found how to check other students' writing as treatment, according to IELTS writing assessment criteria, through their teacher guidance. The post- test was given at the end of the term and previous method was repeated. The results of the study indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between conference and peer evaluation, so the research questions were rejected. The results gained from the two variables were analyzed according to quasi experimental design.
