Dynamic parameters are the intermediate information of the entirety of machine dynamics. The differences between components have not been combined with the structural vibration in the cutting process, so it is difficult to directly represent the dynamic characteristics of the whole machine related to spatial position. This paper presents a method to identify sensitive parts according to the dynamic stiffness-sensitivity algorithm, which represents the dynamic characteristics of the whole machine tool. In this study, two experiments were carried out, the simulation verification experiment (dynamic experiment with variable stiffness) and modal analysis experiment (vibration test of five-axis gantry milling machine). The key modes of sensitive parts obtained by this method can represent the position-related dynamic characteristics of the whole machine. The characteristic obtained is that the inherent properties of machine-tool structure are independent of excitation. The method proposed in this paper can accurately represent the dynamic characteristics of the whole machine tool.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of friction on static and dynamic characteristics, as well as the strength and lifetime of a flexible three-axes computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool. Design/methodology/approach The machine tool is first modeled by using finite element method to analyze static structure with frictionless surface-to-surface contact type. Because the machine tool structure is becoming more and more sophisticated over time, the significant influence of contact conditions between structural elements on the dynamic characteristics of the whole structure must be considered. To examine the dynamic effects caused by inertia forces and displacement of moving bodies on contact stress, the coefficient of friction between two contact bodies is added to perform dynamic simulation and compare the results with the static analysis results. Findings Distribution of stress and contact forces in solid-flexible contact is also studied by using the fundamental dynamic characteristics of a bushing joint. Originality/value Finally, the influence of dynamic structure, cutting conditions and material properties on the strength and lifetime of the CNC machine tool is discussed by using fatigue analysis. Consequently, this research can be used for efficient simulation of structural dynamics, lifetime assessment and interactions of the real CNC machine with the machine tool structure in a virtual environment.

The structural vibration in conventional machine tools which are generally made of cast iron may lead to poor surface finish of the machined components. This has led to the investigations on alternative materials for machine tool structures such as concrete, polymer concrete and epoxy granite which have higher damping properties but lesser Young's modulus. However, higher static stiffness with higher damping is essential for improving the static and dynamic characteristics of machine tool structures. Hence, this work focuses on replacing the vertical machining centre base made of cast iron with steel reinforced epoxy granite to improve the structural static stiffness. A finite element model of the above base is developed and validated against the experimental data obtained using modal analysis. The validated numerical approach is applied for investigating the seven progressive design configurations of base reinforced with steel. It is found that the epoxy granite base of Design configuration-7 with L-channels has significantly reduced the deformation by 56 and 36% considering milling and drilling operations, respectively, in comparison to cast iron base. Further, the natural frequencies of the above configuration are higher in all the modes (by more than 50%) under consideration than those of the existing cast iron structure. Therefore, the proposed configuration of base is a viable alternative for the existing base in order to achieve higher structural damping. The novelty of the present work is the design of epoxy granite vertical machining centre base using steel reinforcements to improve structural rigidity with ease of manufacturing.

A virtual prototype model of Machine Tool has been constructed by using the Pro/E software and the ANSYS software. Considering the effects of contact surfaces, dynamic analyses of Machine Tool are studied. The effects of contact surfaces on the dynamic characteristics of machine tool are studied. So that the purpose predicting and evaluating synthetically the machine tool dynamic performance without a physical sample can be achieved.

The head frame is a key component which plays a supportive and accommodative role in the spindle system of CNC machine tool. Improving the static and dynamic characteristics has profound significance to the development of machine tool and product performance. The simplified finite element modal is established with ANSYS to carry out the static and modal analysis. The results showed that the maximum deformation of the head frame was 0.0066mm, the maximum stress was 3.94Mpa, the deformation of most region was no more than 0.0007mm, which all verified that the head frame had a good stiffness and deforming resistance; several improvement measures for dynamic performance were also proposed by analyzing the mode shapes, and the 1st order natural frequency increased 7.33% while the head frame mass only increased 1.58% applying the optimal measure, which improved the dynamic characteristics of the head frame effectively.

The machine tool dynamics is evaluated under actual working conditions by using a time series technique. This technique develops mathematical models from only one signal, viz., the relative displacement between the cutter and the workpiece. Analysis of the experimental data collected on a vertical milling machine indicates that the new methodology is capable of characterizing the machine tool structure and the cutting process dynamics separately. Furthermore, it can also detect and quantify the interaction between these two subsystems.
