Cipanas River is one river in West Java where its upstream region in Tampomas Mountain, Sumedang and it is emptied into the Java Sea, Indramayu. The study was aimed to investigate fish diversity in the downstream area of Cipanas River. The study was conducted by survey methods with census data collection techniques, taken place at 3 stations of Santing, Tempalong, and Cemara of Indramayu Regency. The parameters measured consisted water quality and fish assemblages. Water quality was measured referring to standard laboratory protocol, and fish collection was made by case net with different mesh sizes. The results showed that water quality conditions of the Cipanas River downstream was suitable for inhabiting fishes. There were as many as 548 individual fishes caught belonging to 21 species, 16 genera, and 14 families. Fish diversity was categorized as medium with 1.6 ≤ H ’≤ 2.2 indicating fairly good community structure, and the Evenness index was 0.81 ≤ E ≤ 0.86 to show highly evenly distributed.

Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) ichthyological collection comprises over 11,000 lots of species of cartilaginous and bony fishes from marine, estuarine and freshwater realms. Due to the collection size, rarity of some specimens, taxonomic and geographical scope, this collection represents a substantial archive of the Neotropical fish fauna, especially concerning the Northeast Brazilian region. Currently, UFPB fish collection is under bioinformatization and curatorial transitions. Hence, the present study aimed to provide a detailed analysis of the Chondrichthyan collection database in which the systematic, spatial and chronological coverages are discussed. Full list of collection objects, updated nomenclature and type collection extent are given for public consultation. There are 504 lots of sharks, batoids and chimaeras that are classified within 10 orders, 22 families, 34 genera, and 64 species. Myliobatiformes and Carcharhiniformes represent taxa with higher number of lots in which freshwater stingrays (Potamotrygonidae) and requiem sharks (Carcharhinidae) stand out. Specimens were mostly collected in the marine coastline off Paraíba state and lower Amazonian region, which set UFPB fish collection as an outstanding scientific collection of the regional genetic heritage.

The Tomo River runs west to east through the high savannah, known as the 'Altillanura' in eastern Colombia, to flow directly into the Orinoco River. This updated ichthyological checklist was developed by revising and deleting five bibliographic references in combination with the results of an expedition carried out in April 2017 in the lower part of the sub–basin. Here we report 305 species of fish belonging to 183 genera, 45 families and 14 orders. The consolidated checklist includes 69 additional species for Tomo River, of which three species are new records for the Orinoco River basin and eight are new species for Colombia. In addition, we add 578 catalog numbers (10,423 specimens) to the fish collection of the Humboldt Institute (IAvH–P)


<em>Abstract.</em>—We reexamined a local population of Guadalupe Bass <em>Micropterus treculii </em>after cessation of a stocking program that significantly reduced the number of individuals that were hybridized with Smallmouth Bass <em>M. dolomie</em> u. Analysis of five years of post-stocking fish collection data show that the percentage of hybrids has increased in all four study sections of the upper Guadalupe River since stocking stopped. We found that hybridization had increased from 0.0% to 9.9% in Johnson Creek, 19.8% to 28.8% in North Fork Guadalupe River, 5.6% to 12.0% in South Fork Guadalupe River, and 24.2% to 26.5% in Guadalupe River main stem sections. This represents an average increase of 6.8% for all streams combined (range = 2.2–9.9%) from the last year of stocking. We also examined hybridization levels in individual stream fragments created by instream barriers (<em>n </em>= 76) to assess spatial variability along tributary and main stem corridors. Although hybridization appears to be increasing on a stream-wide basis, finer scale analysis show that hybrid distribution was spatially complex and there was a substantial portion of the study area with little or no hybridization. There were gradients of decreasing hybridization in an upstream direction in each of the tributaries and marked break points upstream of which hybridization was considerably lower (<10%). We also found that hybridization was highly variable among individual stream fragments (range 0%–71.4%) including those immediately adjacent to one another. These findings suggest that instream barriers may restrict genetic mixing throughout the system and contribute to partial isolation of populations within stream fragments. As such, further targeted intervention efforts are likely necessary to further reduce hybridization in fragments that still contain high proportions of hybrids. The patchy distribution that we observed may be a critical component to consider in assessment and restoration efforts; not only for Guadalupe Bass but also in other endemic black basses threatened by hybridization.

Species introductions and extirpations are key aspects of aquatic ecosystem change that need to be examined at large geographic and temporal scales. The Pánuco Basin (Eastern Mexico) has high ichthyological diversity and ecological heterogeneity. However, freshwater fish (FWF) introductions and extirpations since the mid-1900s have modified species range and distribution. We examine changes in FWF species composition in and among four sub-basins of the Pánuco by comparing fish collection records pre-1980 to 2018. Currently, the FWF of the Pánuco includes 95 species. Fishes in the Poeciliidae, Cyprinidae, and Cichlidae, respectively, comprised most records over time. Significant differences in species composition were found between the first (pre-1980) and last (2011–2018) study periods, but not for periods in-between. Eight independent species groups were key for explaining changes in Pánuco river ichthyofauna; one group was dominated by invasive species, and saw increases in the number of records across study periods (faunal homogenization). Another group was formed by species with conservation concern with a declining number of records over time. Thirteen (2 native and 11 non-native) species were responsible for temporal turnover. These results strongly suggest high rates of differentiation over time (via native species loss) following widespread non-native species introductions.

We reviewed several large collections of the genus Hypostomus from the rio Iguaçu basin summing up to 793 specimens mainly from the Laboratório de Ictiologia do Departamento de Ecologia e Biologia Evolutiva from Universidade Federal de São Carlos, from fish collection of Núcleo de Pesquisas em Limnologia, Ictiologia e Aquicultura da Universidade Estadual de Maringá, and from the Museu de História Natural do Capão da Imbuia. Hypostomus albopunctatus, H. commersoni, H. derbyi, and H. myersi are redescribed and Hypostomus nigropunctatus is described as a new species. A practical key for identification of Hypostomus species from the rio Iguaçu is also provided.
