<p>As habitat loss, predators (human and non-human) and disease epidemics threaten species worldwide, protected sanctuaries have become vital to species conservation. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP) in South Africa is at the centre of one of the world’s greatest conservation success stories. The formal proclamation of HiP in 1895 prevented the extinction of the south-central black rhino (Diceros bicornis minor) population. In recent times HiP has been a strategic source population for the D. b. minor range expansion program, facilitating an 18-fold population increase across southern Africa. However, HiP’s own black rhino population appears to be in decline. Evidence for decline is most often attributed to overpopulation and poor habitat quality that is driving apparently significant increases in the average home range sizes, poor growth rates (i.e., low calf recruitment) and poor body condition of black rhino. Other factors such as non-human calf predation and parasitism have also been raised as potential causes of decline but remain untested. HiP does have some of the highest densities of lion (Panthera leo) and spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta). HiP’s black rhino population also suffers from remarkably severe chronic haemorrhaging lesions caused by a filarial parasite (Stephanofilaria dinniki). Empirical evidence if or indeed why the HiP black rhino population might be in decline is lacking. Investigating this population’s true status and any potential causes of an apparent decline is urgently needed.  This thesis therefore aimed to test three hypotheses for poor performance that included: (1) investigations of the average black rhino home range size, (2) confirmation of black rhino calf predation and (3) the relationship between filarial lesions and black rhino body condition. I inserted horn-implant VHF radio transmitters into 14 adult (i.e., >5 years) female black rhino in HiP and regularly monitored them on-foot over a three-year period. I found that average home range estimates (9.77 km2) were not significantly dissimilar to estimates using a similar technique obtained forty years prior (i.e., 7.5 km²). I also established the first confirmed link between predation attempts and tail amputation during a lion attack on a black rhino calf. Black rhino body condition, while significantly inversely and temporally correlated to lesion severity, did not appear to be driven by lesion severity itself and highlights the need for further research.  An additional research focus for my thesis developed while in the field. I regularly witnessed red-billed oxpeckers (Buphagus erythrorynchus) feeding at black rhino filarial lesions while also alarm calling to alert them to my presence. Studies have found it difficult to empirically show how oxpecker-host interactions have net positive benefits that make it a mutualism. Thus, two chapters were designed to determine if red-billed oxpeckers were predominately mutualistic or parasitic when visiting black rhino. Determining this depended on whether I could identify net positive benefits or net costs to black rhino. Oxpeckers provide rhino with two possible benefits i.e., benefit 1 is cleaning ectoparasites and benefit 2 is increasing vigilance, and one cost i.e., lesion parasitism. More than 50 hours of behavioural observations established that oxpeckers favoured haemorrhaging filarial lesions over sites of tick attachment on black rhino. Moreover, black rhino appeared to be completely tolerant of oxpeckers that fed at lesions. To test whether oxpeckers increased rhino’s anti-predator vigilance, I conducted 84 human approach trials towards black rhino both with and without oxpeckers present. Results showed that rhino were immediately responsive to oxpecker alarm calls and benefitted from more than a two-fold increase in human detection rate and detection distance. Rhino predominately orientated to face towards their sensory blind spot (i.e., downwind) after an oxpecker alarm call. The traditional name (Askari wa kifaru) of the red-billed oxpecker, which translates as the rhino’s guard, appears to be validated. However, future research will need to confirm whether black rhino’s tolerance of parasitic oxpeckers is directly related to vigilance benefits.  In summary, black rhino managers in HiP can be confident that the average home range sizes have not increased significantly. Further, predation of calves might be a greater problem than previously realised and requires further investigation. Monitoring changes in the filarial lesion severity of black rhino might be a useful tool for detecting impending changes in a rhino’s condition. Finally, black rhino are clearly eavesdropping and benefitting from oxpecker alarm calls – a co-evolution that has implications for conserving oxpecker populations as well.</p>

Published research relevant to the UK dairy goat industry is scarce. Current practices and concerns within the UK dairy goat industry must be better understood if research is to have optimal value. A postal survey was conducted of the farmer membership of the Milking Goat Association as a first step in addressing gaps in knowledge. Questions were asked about husbandry practices, farmer observations of their goats and their priorities for further research. Seventy-three per cent of Milking Goat Association members responded, representing 38 per cent of commercial dairy goat farms and 53 per cent of the commercial dairy goat population in England and Wales. Findings were comprehensive and showed extensive variation in farm practices. Farmers reported pneumonia and scours (diarrhoea) as the most prevalent illnesses of their kids. Pneumonia, diarrhoea, failure to conceive and poor growth were the most prevalent observations of youngstock. Overly fat body condition, assisted kidding, failure to conceive and difficulty drying off were the most prevalent observations of adult milking goats. Farmers’ top priorities for further research were kid health (79.5 per cent of farmers), Johne’s disease (69.5 per cent of farmers), tuberculosis (59 per cent of farmers) and nutrition (47.7 per cent of farmers).

Abstract ContextBobcats (Lynx rufus) were extirpated from Ohio, USA, during the mid-1800s. Genetic evidence indicates that they recolonised from neighbouring states. Initial re-establishment occurred almost simultaneously in two spatially distinct areas of a coal-mined landscape in the 1980s. Relative population growth was apparently higher in the eastern than in the southern area. AimsUnderstanding the reasons for the disparity in population dynamics and sustainability is essential for proper bobcat management. It also addresses substantial knowledge gaps in vertebrate carnivore ecology on mined land. We hypothesised that the characteristics of mined land in the eastern Ohio area provided bobcats with greater resources, enabling a more rapid recovery. MethodsWe trapped bobcats and took body measurements and weights to determine condition indices. We attached GPS radio-collars and used locations to determine annual home-range and core-area sizes, home-range and core-area overlap, and habitat selection using remotely sensed land cover data and mine permit records. We compared factors between the two bobcat population areas. Key resultsBody condition indices were higher, and home ranges and core areas of males and females were smaller, for eastern Ohio bobcats. Home-range overlap did not differ for any dyad type. Selection of mined land by habitat type differed at the home-range level, with eastern bobcats selecting more mined habitats and southern bobcats showing an opposite tendency. ConclusionsAn interaction may exist between landscape features of former surface mines and bobcat recovery. Results suggest more favourable habitat conditions in the eastern area, which featured more mined land and more older, less regulated mines, than in the southern area. These conditions may support a higher bobcat reproductive success. ImplicationsThe first bobcat harvest season in Ohio is under development by authorities. We recommend the regulation of eastern and southern Ohio as separate bobcat management units; the southern population should remain protected, and the eastern population should be managed conservatively as a source population to further colonise southern Ohio. Our data suggest that surface-mined land can be conducive to the restoration and conservation of species.

Telemetry techniques were used to monitor the movements and habitat use of 13 female and 7 male black ducks (Anas rubripes) in an inland breeding region of south central Maine in 1977–1980. Black ducks preferred persistent emergent, broad-leaved deciduous forested, and broad-leaved deciduous scrub–shrub wetlands over unconsolidated organic bottom, needle-leaved evergreen forested, and broad-leaved evergreen scrub–shrub ponds. Birds also made frequent use of small ephemeral pools and streams throughout the breeding period. Nests were located in several habitats ranging from wetland sites to upland areas 1.5 km from the most frequently used pond. Home range size averaged 119 ha for females and 231 ha for males and did not differ by reproductive stage. Three pairs used only a single pond during the incubation period. Home ranges were linear (linearity index = 2.8), averaging 1956 m long for females and 2755 m for males. Wetlands used most by hens during incubation recesses were not always those located closest to the nest. Radio-marked ducks that returned in subsequent breeding seasons demonstrated fidelity to the previously used home range. Pair bonds of marked birds lasted until day 19 or 20 of incubation for initial nesting attempts.

Abstract Open beef cows account for between 15 and 30% of a spring-calving cow/calf operation’s annual revenue; however, most producers commonly sell open cows at weaning when prices are at a seasonal low. A three-year (2015–2018) study was conducted using open beef cows (n = 244) from a spring-calving herd in south-central Oklahoma. The objective of the study was to determine whether or not the net return of retaining, feeding, rebreeding, and marketing rebred cows was greater than the revenue from selling open cows at weaning. Each year at weaning, open cows were sorted into Thin or Moderate groups using an average threeman Body Condition Score (BCS). Thin cows (BCS < 5.5) received a ration of 11.4% CP and 63.9% TDN, while Moderate cows (5.5 ≤ BCS ≤ 6.0) received 10.4% CP and 55.2% TDN. Rations were formulated to transform the final condition of all cattle to a BCS of 6. Two rested bulls were assigned to each feeding group during the first 60 days of retention. After 90 days of retention all cattle were pregnancy tested via ultrasound. Enterprise budgeting techniques were used to calculate revenue, costs, and net return for each cow. Mixed effects (ANOVA) models using the Mixed Procedure in SAS were used to determine the fixed effects of feeding treatment, age, pregnancy status, and market type on ending weight and BCS and net return. Year and individual animal were tested and treated as random for each model analyzed. On average, net return was affected by feeding treatment (P = 0.0323), age (P < 0.0001), and pregnancy status (P < 0.0001). The results suggest that producers who have the ability to sort and feed young, thin cows in poorer condition and rebreed them using rested bulls can expect to earn $68/head more than selling them as open at weaning

AbstractThe Critically Endangered black rhinoceros Diceros bicornis occurs mainly in protected areas. Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park, South Africa, contains a key source population for black rhino conservation, and declining population productivity has been attributed to negative habitat changes and a reduction in carrying capacity. As home range increase may be an index of declining habitat quality we determined the home ranges of the black rhino in the Park and compared these ranges with previous estimates. The average size of the home ranges during 1991–2001 was 23.07 ± SE 0.81 km2, which is 54% greater than in the 1980s. Sex and the availability of water did not influence home ranges. Home ranges decreased in winter. Female:male ratios varied across the Park, indicating that one or both sexes may prefer specific areas. Changes in vegetation structure and composition may have caused rhino to maintain larger ranges in order to meet their nutritional requirements. Ongoing review of stocking rates, population performance (including indicators such as range size), and intervention strategies are necessary to manage black rhino in dynamic savannah ecosystems.

Coastalplain honeycombhead (Balduina angustifolia) is underutilised in ecosystem restoration and pollinator conservation projects. Seeds collected from different populations throughout Florida, USA during 2007 and 2016-2018 were used in experiments that evaluated the effects of a 0 or 12-hour photoperiod, seasonal and standard temperatures, 0-5,000 ppm gibberellic acid (GA) or source population (northwest, central and south Florida) on seed germination. For central Florida seeds, germination was high (62-74%) in all seasonal temperatures except for summer (4%) and was not affected by photoperiod. Germination differed for two northwest populations and was higher in warm (35/25 and 30/20&deg;C) temperatures compared with cool (25/15 and 20/10&deg;C) temperatures (63-72% vs. 9-36%). In a one-year move-along experiment, germination was similar at all seasonal and constant temperatures for seeds from central, south-central and south Florida, while northwest Florida seeds had reduced germination under winter temperatures. Germination of northwest Florida seeds after exposure to GA increased for two of four and three of four populations for one year and five-day old seeds, respectively. There were different temperature requirements on a regional scale and different dormancy levels at a local scale for coastalplain honeycombhead.

A study was undertaken to investigate the effects of ground and foliar fertilizer applications on the growth of a 15-year-old Engelmann spruce (Piceaengelmannii Parry) plantation in the south central interior of British Columbia. The site had been broadcast burned prior to plantation establishment, and poor growth performance and pretreatment foliar analyses indicated that multiple nutrient deficiencies were likely growth limiting. Fertilization has had a very strong positive influence on height increment and branch elongation. Although growth responses were minimal in the 1st year after treatment, cumulative increases in height increment over the next 2 years averaged 41 cm (range 28–48 cm) greater than those recorded in unfertilized trees. In relative terms, these responses averaged 102% (range 90–120%). Improvements in branch increment over this 2-year period also averaged 102% (range 85–115%). Results indicate that the majority of the growth response has been due to improved nitrogen nutrition. Combined ground applications of nitrogen and a "complete mix" fertilizer were no better than nitrogen alone in stimulating tree growth. The effectiveness of 2% ferrous sulphate and sodium sulphate sprays was probably adversely affected by foliar scorching following spray application. However, despite foliar burning, results indicate that trees may respond favourably to iron applications if accompanied by ground applications of nitrogen and other deficient nutrients (likely sulphur). Because the study design did not allow distinction of cause and effect, with respect to the consequences of the prior broadcast burn, it cannot be stated conclusively that burning is responsible for inadequate stand nutrition and poor tree growth on this site. However, when combined with evidence of impaired nutrition following slash burning from other studies, it may be safely inferred that burning will exacerbate existing nutritional problems and that fertilization under these conditions may at least temporarily improve plantation performance.
