<p>Prekindergarten to 12th-grade teachers of computer science (CS) face many challenges, including isolation, limited CS professional development resources, and low levels of CS teaching self-efficacy that could be mitigated through communities of practice (CoPs). This study used survey data from 420 PK–12 CS teacher members of a virtual CoP, CS for All Teachers, to examine the needs of these teachers and how CS teaching self-efficacy, community engagement, and sharing behaviors vary by teachers’ instructional experiences and school levels taught. Results show that CS teachers primarily join the CoP to gain high-quality pedagogical, assessment, and instructional resources. The study also found that teachers with more CS teaching experience have higher levels of self-efficacy and are more likely to share resources than teachers with less CS teaching experience. Moreover, teachers who instruct students at higher grade levels (middle and high school) have higher levels of CS teaching self-efficacy than do teachers who instruct lower grade levels (elementary school). These results suggest that CoPs can help CS teachers expand their professional networks, gain more professional development resources, and increase CS teaching self-efficacy by creating personalized experiences that consider teaching experience and grade levels taught when guiding teachers to relevant content. This study lays the foundation for future explorations of how CS education–focused CoPs could support the expansion of CS education in PK–12 schools.</p>

There is a clear call for pre-collegiate students in the United States to become literate in computer science (CS) concepts and practices through integrated, authentic experiences and instruction. Yet, a majority of in-service and pre-service pre-collegiate teachers (instructing children aged five to 18) lack the fundamental skills and self-efficacy to adequately and effectively integrate CS into existing curricula. In this study, 30 pre-collegiate teachers who represent a wide band of experience, grade-levels, and prior CS familiarity participated in a 16-day professional development (PD) course to enhance their content knowledge and self-efficacy in integrating CS into existing lessons and curricula. Using both qualitative and quantitative methodology, a social constructivist approach guided the researchers in the development of the PD, as well as the data collection and analysis on teacher content knowledge and perceptions through a mixed-methods study. Ultimately, participants were introduced to CS concepts and practices through NetLogo, which is a popular multi-agent simulator. The results show that although the pre-collegiate teachers adopted CS instruction, the CS implementation within their curricula was limited to the activities and scope of the PD with few adaptations and minimal systemic change in implementation behaviors.

Using a qualitative case study approach, this study explored the impact of participation in a virtual community of practice on the professional development of secondary school library staff in Trinidad and Tobago. Participants engaged in forum discussions, Web meetings, and online collaborative problem solving over a 12-week period. Preliminary findings suggest that participation in a virtual community of practice impacted participants in four areas: technical, social, cognitive, and tangible. School library practitioners and administrators could use this research to help them develop an informal ongoing professional development program.

Graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) play important instructional roles in introductory science courses, yet they often have little training in pedagogy. The most common form of teaching professional development (PD) for GTAs is a presemester workshop held at the course, department, or college level. In this study, we compare the effectiveness of presemester workshops at three northeastern research universities, each of which incorporated scientific teaching as the pedagogical content framework. The comparison of GTA PD program outcomes at three different institutions is intended to test theoretical assertions about the key role of contextual factors in GTA PD efficacy. Pretest and posttest surveys were used to assess changes in GTA teaching self-efficacy and anxiety following the workshops, and an objective test was used to assess pedagogical knowledge. Analysis of pretest/posttest data revealed statistically significant gains in GTA teaching self-efficacy and pedagogical knowledge and reductions in teaching anxiety across sites. Changes in teaching anxiety and self-efficacy, but not pedagogical knowledge, differed by training program. Student ratings of GTAs at two sites showed that students had positive perceptions of GTAs in all teaching dimensions, and relatively small differences in student ratings of GTAs were observed between institutions. Divergent findings for some outcome variables suggest that program efficacy was influenced as hypothesized by contextual factors such as GTA teaching experience.

Introduction: The Emergency Medicine Chief Resident Incubator is a year-long curriculum for chief residents that aims to provide participants with a virtual community of practice, formal administrative training, mentorship, and opportunities for scholarship. Methods: The Chief Resident Incubator was designed by Academic Life in Emergency Medicine (ALiEM; www.aliem.com) a digital health professions education organization in 2015, following a needs assessment in emergency medicine. A 12-month curriculum was created using constructivist social learning theory, with specific learning objectives that reflected 11 key administrative or professional development domains deemed important to chief residents. The topics covered included interviewing skills, contract negotiations, leadership, coaching, branding, conflict resolution, and ended with a focus on wellness and career longevity. A Core Leadership Team and Virtual Mentors were recruited to lead each annual iteration of the curriculum. The Incubator was implemented as a virtual community of practice using Slack©, a messaging and digital communication platform. Ancillary technology such as Google Hangout on Air© and Mailchimp© were used to facilitate learner engagement with the curriculum. Three in person networking events were hosted at three large emergency medicine and education conferences with special medical education guests. Outcomes include chief resident participation rates, Slack© activity, Google Hangout© web analytics, newsletter email engagement, and scholarship. We also incorporated a hidden curriculum throughout the year with multiple online publications, competitions for guest grand round presentations, and incorporation of digital technologies in medical education. Results: A total of 584 chief residents have participated over the first 3 years of the Chief Resident Incubator; this includes chief residents from over 212 residency programs across North America. Over 27,000 messages have been shared on Slack© (median 214 per week). A total of 32 Google Hangouts© have occurred over the course of the inaugural Incubator including faculty mentorship from Dr. Rob Rogers, Dr. Dara Kass and Dr. Amal Mattu. A monthly newsletter was distributed to the participants with an opening rate of 59%. Scholarship included 26 published academic blog posts, 2 open access In-Training exam prepbooks, a senior level online curriculum with 9 published modules and 3 book club reviews. Conclusion: The Chief Resident Incubator is a virtual community of practice that provides longitudinal training and mentorship for chief residents. This Incubator framework may be used to design similar professional development curricula across various health professions using an online digital platform.

This study examined teachers’ content knowledge (CK) in chemistry and its relationship to teachers’ chemistry background, teaching experience, involvement in professional development and self-efficacy It was further investigated which variables predicted  the level of content knowledge (CK) of one hundred public secondary chemistry teachers. The data shows that the majority of science teachers have low level of CK in Chemistry. Teaching experience, professional development, chemistry background, and self-efficacy  were significantly related to the CK of teachers. Teachers' professional development and self-efficacy predicted the CK of teachers.
