Nasalance is an important concept in the field of resonance speech disorders as opposed to nasality. It ensures the objective measurements of the nasal production, aspect that reduces the value of nasality, for sure an older concept than nasalance. This article underlines especially the fact that both nasalance and nasality are two dimensions of the same reality, the assessment of resonances and that both of them are in the same time important and useful in order to establish a correct diagnosis and to prepare the suitable therapeutic program. The dispute nasalance and nasality is solved based on concrete application by using the nasometer and scales for measuring nasality. Conclusions support the idea that nasalance and nasality are two facets of the complex assessment in case of nasal resonance.

Abstract Introduction Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal degenerative disease of a rapid course. In 25% of ALS sufferers, speech disorders occur as prodromal symptoms of the disease. Impaired communication affects physical health and has a negative impact on mental and emotional condition. In this study, we assessed which domains of speech are particularly affected in ALS. Subsequently, we estimated possible correlations between the ALS patients’ subjective perception of their speech quality and an objective assessment of the speech organs carried out by an expert. Methods The study group consisted of 63 patients with sporadic ALS. The patients were examined for articulatory functions by means of Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment (FDA).Results On the basis of the VHI scores, the entire cohort was divided into 2 groups: group I (40 subjects) with mild speech impairment, and group II (23 subjects) displaying moderate and profound speech deficits. The deficits were observed more frequently in men (60.31%). In an early phase of ALS, changes were typically reported in the tongue, lips and soft palate. The FDA and VHI-based measurements revealed a high, positive correlation between the objective and subjective evaluation of articulation quality. Conclusion Deterioration of the articulatory organs resulted in the reduction of social, physical and emotional functioning. The highly positive correlation between the VHI and FDA scales seems to indicate that the VHI questionnaire may be a reliable, self-contained tool for monitoring the course and progression of speech disorders in ALS.

I propose in these papers to demonstrate, or rather to indicate the nature of the demonstration of, the proposition that—All Geometry, whether projective or metrical, may logically be regarded as merely a particular concrete application of the general theory of Order, as defined by Boundaries. It is true that Geometry, as ordinarily understood, is something more than this; it is concerned with the actual subjective conceptions we entertain of Space, and so far provides matter of discussion to the Psychologist; and it is concerned with the actual objective measurements we make upon physical bodies in Space, and so far concerns the Physicist; while in both these respects it extends beyond the region of pure Logic into those of Epistemology and Philosophy generally. But so far as the pure Mathematician is concerned, every geometrical theorem is embraced in the Theory about to be discussed.

SUMMARYConformation of carcasses from 98 steers from ten different sire breeds was classified according to two visual systems and two objective measurements, which were related to both commercial and dissected carcass composition of their hindquarters. The visual carcass conformation systems, unlike the objective systems, accounted for only a small percentage of the variation in some carcass traits after adjusting for the weights of the right hindquarter and of dissected fat from that hindquarter. Of the carcass conformation systems tested, the objective measurement of area appears to be the best predictor of carcass traits, with the variation in the weight of meat being reduced by 13·4% (P < 0·001) by the inclusion of area measurements. It is suggested that an objective assessment of carcass conformation might be of use in a national carcass classification or grading system.

A case of chondrosarcoma of the nasal septum extending into the maxillary sinus is presented. These cartilaginous tumors are rare in the head and neck, with only 21 reported in the maxilla and four in the nasal septum. Careful histologic analysis is required for correct diagnosis. The present case was treated with an en bloc ethmoidectomy and medial maxillectomy, followed by fast neutron radiation therapy. The therapeutic program is analyzed for opportunity to provide an excellent chance of cure.

AbstractThe aim to objectify nasal airflow and patency is ongoing—many methods have been suggested, often lacking clinical relevance or showing weak correlations with patients' symptoms. It is crucial to thoroughly consult our patients presenting with nasal obstruction—and to inform them about realistic possible surgical outcomes. Often, a perfect-looking internal nose with a straight septum and normal-appearing turbinates does not guarantee a happy, symptom-free “owner.” A review of the literature and the current technical market is presented here to facilitate the rhinosurgeon's decision to perform pre- and postoperative objective measurements of nasal airflow. Recommendations by the societies have been included.

Mentally retarded children participated in a verbal stimulation program developed at the Institute for Psychophysiological and Speech Disorders, Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Intensive home therapy was associated with an increase in articulatory competence in both moderately and profoundly retarded children. The development of articulation differed between retardate groups as well as with the sequence of normal phonological production. The results suggest that the order in which sounds are introduced into the therapeutic program may be a critical factor in the over-all development of competent articulation.

This article is devoted to the case study of a 80‑year‑old patient with sensory‑motor aphasia. The main objectives of the discussion were: presentation of detailed results of qualitative research on linguistic communication, diagnosis of speech disorders and proposing examples of exercises useful for patient therapy. This text consists of a theoretical part in which the author describes the disorder that is the subject of the study and the methodological part presenting the method, technique, and research tools. During the study, authors used questionnaires for interview and observation as well as part of diagnostic test of Jadwiga Szumska’s aphasia study (1980). A detailed description of the study was then presented and a speech diagnosis was made. Considering the communication possibilities and personal interests, an appropriate therapeutic program was proposed.
