Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo realizar o Zoneamento Geoambiental do município de Barrocas/BA, pautado na identificação dos geossistemas e das geofácies presentes no território municipal, buscando analisar a inter-relação dinâmica entre os elementos do meio físico-natural e a intervenção antrópica, como subsidio ao ordenamento territorial. Para se chegar ao objetivo proposto, foi preciso seguir a hierarquização taxonômica e sistêmica proposta por Georges Bertrand, tomando por base a morfologia. Por meio de ferramentas georreferênciadas e modelos de relevo sombreado pôde-se analisar os padrões texturais e a rugosidade do relevo, fazendo a vetorização de polígonos, discriminando as unidades geoambientais in loco. Desse modo, identificou-se em Barrocas dois Geossistemas (Serra do Barandão e Superfície de aplainamento/pedimentada) e seis geofácies (Cimeira estrutural conservada, Cimeira estrutural dissecada, Superfície dissecada em colinas, Serras rebaixadas, Planície aluvial inclinada e uma Superfície de desestruturação artificial). A posteriori, propôs-se um esboço de ordenamento territorial com vista a sustentabilidade ambiental no intuito de subsidiar usos mais sustentáveis para as terras do município em questão. Ressalta-se que o zoneamento, é de grande importância, sendo um poderoso instrumento de informações ao processo de gestão do território, sendo o município o laboratório ideal para sua aplicação, por se tratar de uma escala de planejamento e gestão territorial/ambiental. Mediante a análise da dinâmica da paisagem, constatou-se quão intensa tem se dado a atuação antropogênica no território barroquense, contudo, verificou-se que os sistemas ambientais ainda resistem, observando-se que o tempo está permitindo o processo de regeneração e adaptação dos geossistemas mantendo-os em funcionalidade. Geoenvironmental zoning of the municipality of Barrocas/BA: contributions to land use planningABSTRACTThis research aimed to carry out the Geoenvironmental Zoning of the municipality of Barrocas/BA, based on the identification of  geosystems and geofacies present in the municipal territory, seeking to analyze the dynamic interrelationship between the elements of the physical-natural environment and the anthropic intervention, as a subsidy to land use planning.To reach the proposed objective, it was necessary to follow the taxonomic and systemic hierarchy proposed by Georges Bertrand, based on morphology. Through georeferenced tools and shaded relief models, it was possible to analyze the textural patterns and the roughness of the relief, making the vectorization of polygons, discriminating the geoenvironmental units in loco. Thus, two geosystems were identified in Barrocas (Serra do Barandão and Pedimented surface) and six geofacies (Conserved structural summit, Dissected structural summit, Surface dissected in hills, Lowered saws, Colluvium-alluvial ramp and an Artificial disruption surface). A posteriori, an outline of territorial planning was proposed with a view to environmental sustainability in order to subsidize more sustainable uses for the lands of the municipality in question. It is noteworthy that zoning is of great importance, being a powerful information tool for the territory management process, the municipality being the ideal laboratory for its application, as it is a territorial / environmental planning and management scale. Through the analysis of the landscape dynamics, it was verified how intense the anthropogenic performance has been in the Baroque territory, however, it was found that the environmental systems still resist, observing that time is allowing the process of regeneration and adaptation of the geosystems keeping them in functionality.Keywords: Geosystem. Land use planning as strategic instruments to guide urban dynamics faces particular challenges in the Global South, including Sub-Saharan Africa, where urgent interventions are required to improve urban and environmental sustainability. This study investigated and identified key challenges of land use planning and its environmental assessments to improve the urban and environmental sustainability of city-regions. In doing so, we combined expert interviews and questionnaires with spatial analyses of urban and regional land use plans, as well as current and future urban land cover maps derived from Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing. By overlaying and contrasting land use plans and land cover maps, we investigated spatial inconsistencies between urban and regional plans and the associated urban land dynamics and used expert surveys to identify the causes of such inconsistencies. We furthermore identified and interrogated key challenges facing land use planning, including its environmental assessment procedures, and explored means for overcoming these barriers to rapid, yet environmentally sound urban growth. The results illuminated multiple inconsistencies (e.g., spatial conflicts) between urban and regional plans, most prominently stemming from conflicts in administrative boundaries and a lack of interdepartmental coordination. Key findings identified a lack of Strategic Environmental Assessment and inadequate implementation of land use plans caused by e.g., insufficient funding, lack of political will, political interference, corruption as challenges facing land use planning strategies for urban and environmental sustainability. The baseline information provided in this study is crucial to improve strategic planning and urban/environmental sustainability of city-regions in Sub-Saharan Africa and across the Global South, where land use planning faces similar challenges to address haphazard urban expansion patterns.

Abstract In the Global South, including the Sub-Saharan African city-regions, the possible future urban expansion patterns may pose a challenge towards improving environmental sustainability. Land use planning strategies and instruments for regulating urban expansion are faced with challenges, including insufficient data availability to offer insights into the possible future urban expansion. This study integrated empirical data derived from Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, and surveys of experts to offer insights into the possible future urban expansion under spatial planning scenarios to support land use planning and environmental sustainability of city-regions. We analyzed the spatial determinants of urban expansion, calibrated the land cover model using the Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network and Markov, and developed three scenarios to simulate land cover from 2017 to 2030 and to 2050. The scenarios include Business As Usual that extrapolates past trends; Regional Land Use Plan that restricts urban expansion to the land designated for urban development, and; Adjusted Urban Land that incorporates the leapfrogged settlements into the land designated for urban development. Additionally, we quantified the potential degradation of environmentally sensitive areas by future urban expansion under the three scenarios. Results indicated a high, little, and no potential degradation of environmentally sensitive areas by the future urban expansion under the Business As Usual, Adjusted Urban Land, and Regional Land Use Plan scenarios respectively. The methods and the baseline information provided, especially from the Adjusted Urban Land scenario showed the possibility of balancing the need for urban expansion and the protection of environmentally sensitive areas. This would be useful to improve the environmental sustainability of the Sub-Saharan African city-regions and across the Global South, where insufficient data availability challenges land use planning.

Rapid urban expansion is a significant contributor to land cover change and poses a challenge to environmental sustainability, particularly in less developed countries. Insufficient data about urban expansion hinders effective land use planning. Therefore, a high need to collect, process, and disseminate land cover data exists. This study focuses on urban land cover change detection using Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing methods to produce baseline information in support for land use planning. We applied a supervised classification of land cover of LANDSAT data from 1987, 2002, and 2017. We mapped land cover transitions from 1987 to 2017 and computed the net land cover change during this time. Finally, we analyzed the mismatches between the past and current urban land cover and land use plans and quantified the non-urban development area lost to urban/built-up. Our results indicated an increase in urban/built-up and bare land cover types, while vegetation land cover decreased. We observed mismatches between past/current land cover and the existing land use plan. By providing detailed insights into mismatches between the regional land use plan and unregulated urban expansion, this study provides important information for a critical debate on the role and effectiveness of land use planning for environmental sustainability and sustainable urban development, particularly in less developed countries.

Globally, urbanization is increasing at an unprecedented rate at the cost of agricultural and forested lands in peri-urban areas fringing larger cities. Such land-cover change generally entails negative implications for societal and environmental sustainability, particularly in South Asia, where high demographic growth and poor land-use planning combine. Analyzing historical land-use change and predicting the future trends concerning urban expansion may support more effective land-use planning and sustainable outcomes. For Nepal’s Tarai region—a populous area experiencing land-use change due to urbanization and other factors—we draw on Landsat satellite imagery to analyze historical land-use change focusing on urban expansion during 1989–2016 and predict urban expansion by 2026 and 2036 using artificial neural network (ANN) and Markov chain (MC) spatial models based on historical trends. Urban cover quadrupled since 1989, expanding by 256 km2 (460%), largely as small scattered settlements. This expansion was almost entirely at the expense of agricultural conversion (249 km2). After 2016, urban expansion is predicted to increase linearly by a further 199 km2 by 2026 and by another 165 km2 by 2036, almost all at the expense of agricultural cover. Such unplanned loss of prime agricultural lands in Nepal’s fertile Tarai region is of serious concern for food-insecure countries like Nepal.

RESUMO:No Brasil, a gestão de unidades de conservação ainda é pouco discutida no sentido de governança, e ao mesmo tempo direciona olhares para aplicação de metodologias e políticas de ordenamento territorial que venham a mitigar os conflitos e efetivar práticas mais participativas. O objetivo do artigo é compreender as implicações do ordenamento territorial e da gestão de UC em ambientes costeiros, tendo como referência empírica a APA de Piaçabuçu, Litoral Sul de Alagoas. A metodologia utilizou basicamente os seguintes instrumentos: levantamento bibliográfico e documental, visita de campo e entrevista com gestores. Para análise e interpretação dos resultados optou-se pelo decálogo proposto pelo geógrafo espanhol Barragán Muñoz (2014) que permite valorar os ambientes geográficos e sistematizar um modelo de governança eficaz na costa. Em suma, a dinâmica territorial da APA de Piaçabuçu passa por problemas que dificultam o trabalho da gestão e necessita de parcerias que atentem para a governança e inclua as esferas antenadas com a organização do território.Palavras-chave: Ordenamento Territorial; Unidade de Conservação; Litoral. ABSTRACT:In Brazil, the management of conservation units is still little discussed in the sense of governance and, at the same time, it directs approaches to the application of territorial planning methodologies and policies that will mitigate conflicts and effect more participatory practices. For governance analysis in UC, the decalogue proposed by the Spanish geographer Barragán Muñoz (2014) was used to assess geographic environments and systematize an effective governance model on the coast. The rapid pace of urbanization has presented numerous challenges for developing countries such as Jamaica. The effects of urbanization coupled with poor environmental and development practices have exerted tremendous pressure on the country's fragile and limited natural resources. This issue is exacerbated by poverty, poor urban planning and management and lack of enforcement of existing land use regulations. The purpose of this paper is to critically examine the challenges in reversing negative environmental trends and practices which is increasing the vulnerability of the population, economy, infrastructure and other vulnerable elements of the society to the devastating impacts of natural hazards. The growing threats from hurricanes and tropical storms has have occurred over the last 10 years have highlighted the need for more sustainable developtnent. The report concludes with a number of recommendations that are critical to address the never ending cycle of environmental degradation.

Participation in planning has become progressively important in territory management. As regards Territorial Planning, farmers are among the main stakeholders. In fact multifunctionality of agriculture admits a new role to primary sector. In particular the management of open areas is particularly strategic in peri-urban areas, where competition for resources is highest than in other areas, especially for the land. In this context, the involvement of farmers as privileged stakeholders to land management is even more important. This paper proposes a methodological approach for the evaluation of peri-urban land use plans by farmers. In particular, it has been considered the "Territorial Action Plan of Valencias Huerta (TAPVH).
