Background: Pharmacovigilance has evolved as an important tool for dealing with Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) both in pre-marketing and post-marketing scenario. Underreporting of ADRs at our Adverse drug reaction Monitoring Centre (AMC) led us to conduct this study to assess Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) of the practicing clinicians at our tertiary care Pt. J.N.M. Medical College associated Dr. B.R.A.M. Hospital, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India, towards ADRs reporting.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using pretested questionnaires consisting of 29 questions related to KAP of the practicing clinicians at Pt. J.N.M. Medical College associated Dr. B.R.A.M.  Hospital, Raipur towards ADRs reporting. The percentage of responders for each question was calculated. All statistical analysis was performed in Microsoft Office Excel 2007.Results: Out of 135 questionnaires distributed only 100 were considered for analysis, so the overall response rate was 74.07%. We calculated the result from the 100 responders. Overall 77% responders were aware of existence of ADR monitoring system in India, while only 40% were aware of its existence at their hospital. Only 8% responders had reported ADRs to the National Pharmacovigilance Centre and 10% to the Adverse drug reaction Monitoring Centre (AMC) at their hospital. Lack of knowledge about where, how and whom to report ADRs, lack of time, inability to decide what to report (known or unknown ADRs) and unavailability of ADR reporting form were the important factors discouraging them reporting ADRs.Conclusions: Creating awareness regarding ADR reporting through CMEs among practicing clinicians and early sensitization at medical undergraduate level for medical students may improve the current ADR reporting rate.

Objectives: The objectives of the study were to evaluate the impact of certain educational interventions on adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting by nursing health professionals at a tertiary care hospital. Methods: Knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of the nurses regarding ADR reporting were evaluated before and after interventions using a KAP questionnaire. Educational interventions carried out among the nurses were workshops, booklets, SMSes, personal briefings, and posters. Number and quality of ADR reported by nurses in pre-intervention (3 months), intervention (10 months), and post-intervention (3 months) phase were compared. Results: There was a significant increase in response rate to questionnaires in the post-intervention phase (post-IP) (97.74%) as compared to pre-intervention (91.28%) phase (pre-IP). The knowledge score of the nurses increased significantly in post-IP (11.65 ± 2.14) as compared to the pre-intervention (6.98 ± 2.46) phase. No ADR was reported by nurses in pre-IP. Thirty nurses reported 30 ADRs in the intervention phase and six nurses reported six ADRs in the post-IP. The mean score of completeness of ADR notification forms decreased significantly in post-IP. Maximum ADRs (10) were reported after the workshops. Conclusion: Educational interventions improved the KAP of ADR reporting by nurses, albeit temporary. This suggests the need of continuous educational interventions.

Background: Early detection of adverse drug reaction is one step towards the prevention of ADRs. Foundation of Pharmacovigilance is spontaneous reporting which is minimal in India. Among the all health care professionals, nurses are caregivers at bedside. Improvement in knowledge and practice of adverse drug reaction reporting among nurses will definitely increases spontaneous reporting. In this study, knowledge, attitude and practice of nursing staff about pharmacovigilance was evaluated.Methods: It was prospective, cross-sectional, observational, questionnaire-based study among the nurses of the tertiary care hospital Solapur. A questionnaire evaluating knowledge, attitude and practice was distributed among nursing staff and filled questionnaire were collected back and analyzed by microsoft excel 2013.Results: Response rate of our study was 44.88%.  38.61% doctors were knowing meaning of pharmacovigilance while 61.38% participants knew that all drugs available in market are not safe. Taking proper medication history before prescribing drugs was considered important by 92.57% participants. 79.70% participants were aware about Pharmacovigilance program of India. 64.35% doctors answered correctly to elements which are mandatory to record. Only 24.75% participants were knowing the basis that pharmcovigilance provides for.Conclusions: Nursing staff of tertiary care hospital, Solapur had very appreciable and positive attitude towards pharmacovigilance but there is a need for improvement in knowledge and practice of ADR reporting.

Background: Many adverse drug reactions (ADRs), interactions and specific toxicities are known once drug is exposed to a larger population. Spontaneous reporting adverse events (AEs) are fundamental to a robust pharmacovigilance (PhV). Increasing physician awareness about the pharmacovigilance and ADR reporting can significantly contribute the safety of medicines. Objective of the study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices related to PhV among medical professionals at a tertiary care teaching hospital.Methods: Postgraduate students (PGs) and medical teachers at a Medical College and tertiary care hospital were evaluated for their knowledge, attitude and practice of pharmacovigilance with the help of a structured questionnaire. Suggestions for improving the effectiveness of the pharmacovigilance practices were also sought.Results: One-hundred and fifty doctors [91 (60.7%) PGs and 59 (39.3%) medical teachers] participated. Overall, 48.7% were males. 96% believed that PhV is important in medical practice but only 79.3% knew the definition of pharmacovigilance. Only 24.7% were aware of the existing nationwide pharmacovigilance program whereas the international collaborating center was known to 26% of the participants. 96% believed that it is the duty of a treating physician to report an ADR while 36.7% felt that ADR reporting should be the responsibility of a separate team. Surprisingly, 54% felt that financial aid should be provided for ADR reporting. 42.7% have not reported any ADR whilst only 16% have reported more than 10 ADRs in their career. To create an ADR database (79.3%) was the common expectation from the PhV center. 98.7% suggested continued medical education (CME) and trainings to improve the effectiveness of PhV in Indian setting.Conclusions: Regardless of a fair attitude towards PhV, the practice of ADR reporting is poor probably because of lack of sufficient knowledge about PhV. Motivating the physicians through CMEs and trainings so as to improve and strengthen the pharmacovigilance practices is the current need in India.

Background: Background: Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reporting by consumers is quite low in India. Assessing knowledge and attitude of consumers regarding ADR reporting and observing practice of ADR reporting among them can help explore probable causes for underreporting of ADRs by consumers.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital using investigator-administered questionnaire and interviewing indoor patients of Surgery, Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Dermatology departments. The questionnaire was prepared to assess knowledge, attitude and practice of consumers about ADR reporting. Data was analysed using mean, standard deviation and percentages.Result: A total of 820 consumers of medicines were included. It was found that 32.2% consumers were not aware that a drug can produce adverse effects. After being explained about adverse drug reactions, 94.6% consumers felt that adverse drug reactions should be reported. However, 98.8% consumers were not aware of Pharmacovigilance Programme of India. After consulting about consumer reporting programme, majority of respondents (96.1%) felt that the direct consumer reporting programme helps reporting of ADRs. Moreover, 93.7% of consumers were willing to use it to report ADRs in future. Consumers preferred the Telephonic method with a Toll free number for ADR reporting followed by informing a health care professional.Conclusion: Poor knowledge and awareness about ADR reporting is the major factor for low to nearly absent ADR reporting by consumers in India.
