Simple ionic liquids exhibit unique physical and chemical
properties that make them very useful for deployment in electrochemical
devices such as solvent-free electrolytes in capacitors and batteries.
However, incorporating redox functionality into ionic liquid
structures opens up in situ faradaic electrochemistry which allows access
to a large array of new electrochemical applications reliant upon
heterogeneous or homogenous electron-transfer processes. This paper
presents and discusses the opportunities and challenges for these types
of electro-materials across a myriad of applications by considering
exemplar quinone-functionalised ionic liquids.

An overview of the metal-mediated synthesis and use of nanosized metallodendrimers is given with emphasis on electron-transfer processes (molecular batteries consisting in dendrimers decorated with a large number of equivalent redox-active centers) and catalytic reactions (electron-transfer-chain catalytic synthesis of dendrimers decorated with ruthenium carbonyl clusters, redox catalysis of nitrate and nitrite electroreduction in water by star-shape hexanuclear catalysts).

In situ spectroelectrochemical studies focussing on the Franck-Condon region and sub-ns electron transfer processes in Ru(II)-tpphz-Pt(II) based photocatalysts reveal that single-electron reduction effectively hinders intramolecular electron transfer between the photoexcited...

We describe the design and synthesis of ferrocene dimers and trimers bridged by an oligothiophene spacer as both cathodic and anodic multiple redox-active organic–organometallic hybrid molecules. The electrochemical properties of all compounds were examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The voltammograms showed different multi-step, multi-electron redox reactions derived from multi-ferrocene fragments and the organic spacer. The results indicate that a number of thiophene rings in the spacer can be attuned to the redox potentials and the electron-transfer processes.
