Self care management in patients with chronic renal failure who undergoing hemodialysis is a positive effort of patients to find and participate in their health services to optimize health, prevent complications, control symptoms, develop medical resources, minimize disturbance in diseases that can interfere with life. Family support is very important in the care of hemodialysis patients. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship of family support with self-care management of hemodialysis patients. The research method used analytic description with cross sectional approach. The population involved in this study were patients in the hemodialysis room of RSUD Dr.Soetomo Surabaya, with a sample size of 52 respondents, using consecutive sampling. Independent variable in this research is family support and dependent variable is self care management. Data collection using a family support questionnaire and modified hemodialysis patient self care measurement scale. Data were analyzed using spearman rho, with significant level p less than 0,05. The results showed that family support affects the self-care management of hemodialysis patients (p = 0.01). Family support affects the self-care management of hemodialysis patients in the hemodialysis chamber of Dr.Soetomo Hospital Surabaya. The importance of family support is necessary in treating hemodialysis patients for self-care management including monitoring of diet, stress management, safe diet, exercise, good habits, shunt care, diet therapy and observation of care instructions.

This study was designed as a descriptive-cross-sectional study in order to determine self-care ability in hemodialysis patients. The study was conducted with participation of 254 patients who received treatment in three dialysis centers between November 1, 2015 and January 30, 2016, who volunteered to participate in the study and were able cooperate with the researchers. The data were collected using a questionnaire comprised of 17 items and Self-Care Agency Scale. Self-Care Agency Scale was developed in 1979 by Kearney and Fleischer and was adapted to Turkish by Nahçivan. It is a Likert-type scale comprised of 35 items. The minimum possible score is 35, the maximum possible score is 140. Higher scores show greater self-care ability. Data were evaluated by calculating percentages and using one-way ANOVA, t-test, and Tukey test. Of all the study participants, 46.5% were female and 53.5% were male; 36.2% were primary school graduates; 98.4% had a social security; 84.3% had income levels that were equal to their expenditures; 68.5% lived in city centers. Mean age of the participants was 58.2 ± 12.9years. 80.3% of the patients had accompanying chronic disease; 39.4% have been undergoing dialysis for 1-5 years; 96.1% were undergoing dialysis for 3 times a week; 54.3% described their health as good; 53.5% had changes in their daily life activities due to dialysis treatment; and 29.9% had their familial and social life affected by dialysis treatment.  The mean total score from Self-Care Agency Scale was calculated as 112.4 ± 10.3. Self-Care Agency Scale score was found to correlate with some sociodemographic and clinical features of the patients (p<0.05). It was found that patients had above intermediate level of Self-Care Agency Scale scores. In light of the study results, it is recommended that patients are educated to further improve their self-care ability. Keywords: Hemodialysis, Self-care, Behavior, Knowledge, Application.

Background: One of the greatest challenges that will face by the health system globally in the 21stcentury will be the increasing burden of chronic kidney diseases. Self-care management becomes an inevitable and significant task for them. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of VAT with reinforcement handbook on knowledge patient and their self-care behavior among hemodialysis. Methods: An evaluative approach with one group pretest post -test design was adopted for the study. The study was conducted in SVBCH, Silvassa among 70 hemodialysis patients using convenience sampling method. Results: The results of the study revealed that the posttest mean knowledge scores of patient(18.6), and the self-care behavior of patients(111.5) found higher that the pretest mean(13.1, and 103.6) scores and the obtained ‘t’ values (patient- 11.02, patient’s self-care behavior-7.99, were greater than the table value 1.995 and it found to be highly significant at p<0.05. Hence the intervention was effective in improving knowledge and self-care behavior. The knowledge scores and the self-care behavior scores of hemodialysis patients found positively correlated (0.3). There was a significant association between hemodialysis patient pretest knowledge & educational status. There was no significant association between patient pretest self-care behavior & selected demographic variables. Conclusion: The study results confirmed that the knowledge regarding self-care management of hemodialysis patient significantly increased among patients after administration of video assisted teaching with reinforcement handbook. Self-care behavior also increased among patients along with the knowledge of patients.

Background: Hyperphosphatemia in end-stage renal disease patients is prevalent and associated with increasing cardiac mortality. Restricting dietary phosphate intake is a key element in controlling hyperphosphatemia, but most patients fail due to lack of knowledge and sustainability. In this study, we aimed to examine whether incorporating a smartphone application (APP) into a multidisciplinary caring system can decrease the prevalence of hyperphosphatemia in hemodialysis patients. Methods: We designed a quasi-experimental study to enroll patients undergoing regular hemodialysis and assigned them to receive APP-assisted caring program (ACP group, n = 30) or standard education caring program (SCP group, n = 30). Both caring programs targeting dietary phosphate control were administered. Patients’ general characteristics, self-care efficacy scales, knowledge test of phosphate control, and results of monthly blood biochemistry were analyzed. Findings: Knowledge of diet phosphate control and self-care efficacy were significantly higher in the ACP group. Notably, the knowledge improvement was higher in patients aged over 60 years. Compared to the SCP group, the percentage of patients with successful hyperphosphatemia control was significantly higher in the ACP group ( p = 0.0398). Conclusion: The APP-assisted caring program benefits patients with regular hemodialysis to achieve better dietary phosphate control without compromising proper protein intake.
