Data on the history of mineralogical research and knowledge in Ukraine from ancient times to the 90s of the XX century are concentrates in the thorough final work and the prehistory, origin, formation and comprehensive development («golden age») of mineralogy in Ukraine are characterized in varying detail. It is shown that mineralogical researches acquire systemicity from the 50s of the XX century, thanks mainly to the activities of the Lviv Geological and Ukrainian Mineralogical Societie, Lviv University and M. P. Semenenko Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation оf the NAS of Ukraine. The analysis shows that Ukrainian scientists in difficult conditions without their statehood, as part of various metropolises, developed the basic principles of mineralogical science, and therefore it, as soon as geopolitically it became possible, reached its apogee in the «golden age» of mineralogy. It was marked by significant fundamental achievements, which in the complex contributed to the compilation of various geological maps as a basis for the creation of the Geological Survey of Ukraine schemes for the distribution of fields of metallic and non-metallic minerals. The problem of discovering new minerals and publishing a modern monographic compilation of Ukraine,such as the multivolume «Mineralogical Encyclopedia of Ukraine», remains acute. The new modern edition on the history of mineralogy in Ukraine is timely and extremely necessary for specialists in the field of Earth sciences and other fields of science, so it can be used by scientists, teachers, geologists, historians, graduate students and students, as well as the general public community.

The article explores the basic principles of the structural organisation in music and architecture. We analyze development and transformation of these principles through the various stages of human culture from ancient times to the present. We explore understanding of harmony and aesthetics in different cultures. We review the basic rules of harmony taking the art of ancient Greece and Rome as an example. We review the history of the Golden Ratio and its realisation in practice. The central section gives the calculation of the Golden Ratio in the J. S. Bach`s Chromatic Fantasia in D minor. Finally, we describe the formation and development of the fractal aesthetics and give the examples of fractal art in architecture and music.

AbstractThis paper begins by tracking the history of piracy from Greek and Roman times, to the Golden Age of piracy, into modern day. It also looks at the motivations for becoming a pirate and the “piracy cycle.” The paper then moves into a discussion of how piracy has influenced the law, such as its impact on Universal Jurisdiction and international treaties like the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea; however, a stable definition of what constitutes “piracy” has become troublesome, even with the abundance of legal sources related to the subject. The paper then moves into a discussion of three US court cases dealing with the issue of piracy: the first from the Golden Age of piracy, the second in the early part of this century showing how piracy is not always prosecuted in the traditional sense, and finally with the case of the famous pirate the US Navy SEALS captured during the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama. Finally, the paper concludes the discussion using the modern day situation of Somalia to show how the “piracy cycle” is still capable of explaining what draws people to piracy, how that particular situation has been combated by the international community, and how neighboring countries, like Kenya, are using their own court systems to the advantage of the rest of the world.

Abstract This article recovers the early history of the Soviet ‘closed city’, towns that during the Cold War were absent from maps and unknown to the general public due to their involvement in weapons research. I argue that the closed cities echoed and appropriated features of the Stalinist Gulag camp system, principally their adoption of physical isolation and the language of obfuscation. In doing so, I highlight a process called ‘atomized urbanism’ that embodies the tension between the obdurate reality of the city and the goal of the state to obliterate that reality through secrecy. In spatial terms, ‘atomized’ also describes the urban geography of these cities which lacked any kind of organic suburban expansion.

In publications of Russian folklore, along with authentic texts there are a number of literary stylizations based on folklore. The article traces the history of one such pseudo-folkloric text—a carol which was first published by Ivan Petrovich Sakharov (1807 to 1863) in 1837. It has been established that this carol is a montage of two texts: the first is a carol, printed in 1817 by I.E. Sreznevsky in the Ukrainian Bulletin, and the second is a song included in the Tale of Brother Ivanushka and his Sister Alyonushka (SUS 450). Such contamination is unique and is found only in this one text, which was later reprinted many times. Taking into account Sakharov’s reputation as a falsifier of folklore, there is no reason to doubt that it was he who composed this carol; such contamination of works belonging to different folkloric genres is also characteristic of other of Sakharov’s publications. The carol that Sakharov published attracted the particular interest of researchers of Slavic mythology due to the fact that it described how an old man was going to sacrifice a goat. Several generations of historians saw in this pseudo-folkloric text a description of a ritual that pagan Slavs performed in ancient times. Considering the carol as an historical document, researchers of mythology built their interpretations based on the supposed time of its appearance, the nature of its genre, plot, and individual details. Thus, Sakharov’s pseudo-folkloric creation found an eager audience among scholars, and it stimulated their imagination in picturing the life of pagan Rus’.
