The theoretical model book for measuring holistic critical thinking (PCH) in the teaching of the nursing diagnostic process (PDE) highlights the complexity of the PDE based on the application of the PCH of nursing students in face of the requirement of making accurate clinical decisions; in addition, it demonstrates the applicability of the Holistic Critical Thinking Scoring Rubric (HCTSR) instrument authored by professors Peter A. Facione and Noreen Facione; for the assessment of holistic critical thinking in nursing and health, becoming an important diagnostic and formative assessment tool at different levels of education, which can contribute to the advancement of nursing science with regard to the training of critical nurses and reflective in the application of the nursing diagnostic process that is structured in the stages of investigation, interpretation and nursing diagnoses with a view to making accurate nursing decisions. To reach these stages, the nurse must develop skills of holistic critical thinking (PCH), in order to make decisions focused on the best results. Based on this theoretical model, it will be possible to implement different strategies to develop holistic critical thinking in teaching the diagnostic process according to the students' PCH level.

Objective: describe the theoretical model built for measurement of holistic critical thinking in nursing teaching using the Holistic Critical Thinking Scoring Rubric. This instrument evaluates the holistic critical thinking. It was originated in the United States (EUA) and translated into Portuguese. Method: a descriptive-exploratory study with a qualitative approach. The study was realized at an institution of higher education in South Brazil, after approval by the Committee for Ethics in Research, CAEE No. 72294917.7.0000.5347. Five nursing students and four teachers participated in the study through focus groups sessions. For data analysis, the technique of content analysis was used. Results: metaconcepts and conceptual elements were registered. They gave support to the construction of the theoretical model of holistic critical thinking measurement in nursing teaching. Final Considerations: The built theoretical model has shown to contribute and guide accurate clinical decision making by nursing students.

AimThe aim of this study was to explore the effectiveness of concept maps in improving the critical thinking of nursing students.MethodThis quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pretest–posttest design among two groups of a total of 115 nursing students. Participants were either exposed to concept mapping sessions or taught with traditional lecturing; the assessment tool was a test of critical thinking completed before and after the intervention.ResultsThe mean scores for critical thinking were higher in the group that engaged in mapping sessions compared to the traditional lecture group.ConclusionThis study supports the usefulness of concept maps as a teaching strategy to promote development of nursing students' critical thinking abilities. These findings could provide valuable evidence for establishing concept mapping as a promising teaching strategy for nursing students.

Interpretations of patient data are complex and diverse, contributing to a risk of low accuracy nursing diagnoses. This risk is confirmed in research findings that accuracy of nurses' diagnoses varied widely from high to low. Highly accurate diagnoses are essential, however, to guide nursing interventions for the achievement of positive health outcomes. Development of critical thinking abilities is likely to improve accuracy of nurses' diagnoses. Newer views of critical thinking serve as a basis for critical thinking in nursing. Seven cognitive skills and ten habits of mind are identified as dimensions of critical thinking for use in the diagnostic process.

Background. Nursing documentation has long traditions and represents core element of nursing, but the documentation is often criticized of being incomplete. Nursing diagnoses are an important research topic in nursing in terms of quality of nursing assessment, interventions, and outcome in addition to facilitating communication and continuity.Aim. The aim of this study was to explore the nurses’ and nursing students’ experiences after implementing free text format nursing diagnoses in a medical department.Method. The study design included educational intervention of free text nursing diagnoses. Data was collected through five focus group interviews with 18 nurses and 6 students as informants. The data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis.Results. The informants describe positive experiences concerning free text format nursing diagnoses’ use and usefulness; it promotes reflection and discussion and is described as a useful tool in the diagnostic process, though it was challenging to find the diagnosis’ appropriate formulation.Conclusion. Our findings indicate a valid usability of free text format nursing diagnoses as it promotes the diagnostic process. The use seems to enhance critical thinking and may serve as valuable preparation towards an implementation of standardized nursing diagnoses. Use and support of key personnel seem valuable in an implementation process.

AbstractObjectivesNovice nurses are struggling to exercise the critical thinking skill set needed to make competent clinical decisions in today’s complex health care environment. This poses immense threats to the health and safety of patients. To address this alarming concern, many prominent organizations have called for a widespread overhaul of nursing curricula.MethodsA consistent theme among the recommendations for revising nursing curricula is the utilization of innovative curricula designs that focus on enhancing the critical thinking ability of nursing students, such as a concept-based curriculum.ResultsPlanning and implementing a curriculum revision is an overwhelming undertaking.ConclusionsProviding nurse educators with a guide on how to transition to a concept-based curriculum may help to facilitate a course revision.
