Allelopathic effect of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) on seed germination and growth of Portulaca oleracea

The present study aims to evaluate the effect of leaf extract of Rhanterium epapposum and Salsola imbricata at various concentrations (20%, 40%, and 60%) on the germination and shoot and root lengths of two weed species; Portulaca oleracea and Chenopodium murale. The present study findings proved that the inhibitory effect of seed germination and shoot and root lengths of the studied species was largely dependent on the concentration of R. epapposum and S.imbricata leaf extract. The results showed that the highest allelopathic effect on the germination of the seeds of C.murale by leaf extract of R. epapposum and S. imbricata especially at concentration of 40% and 60% . While the lowest effect was of the leaf extract of S.imbricata. However the concentration of 60% was higher on the germination of the seeds C. murale and P. oleracea. Results also showed that the root and shoot lengths of C. murael was more sensitive to allelochemicals of R. epapposum leaf extract compared to S.imbricata leaf extract. However, the root and shoot lengths of P. oleracea was more sensitive to allelochemicals of S. imbricata leaf extract compared to R.epapposum leaf extract. Hence, the present findings recommended using the R. epapposum leaf extract and S. imbricata leaf extract as a tool for weed management especially C. murale and P. oleracea.

Os compostos alelopáticos podem afetar o crescimento e inibir a germinação das espécies. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a fitoquímica e o efeito alelopático do extrato das folhas de Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi na germinação e crescimento de plântulas de Lactuca sativa L. e, posteriormente, aplicar a metodologia em eucalipto vermelho (Eucalyptus camaldulensis). Os compostos químicos foram determinados em extrato alcoólico das folhas, comparados e contrastados observando a alteração de cor. As sementes de alface e eucalipto vermelho foram distribuídas em gerbox contendo papel filtro como substrato, umedecido com 7 mL do extrato aquoso das folhas frescas, nas seguintes concen trações: (0; 12,5; 25; 50; 75 e 100%). Para todas as análises e experimentos foram utilizados três repetições. Os gerbox foram distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, mantidos em câmara de germinação com temperatura de 20 °C para alface e 28°C para eucalipto e fotoperíodo de 12 horas. Durante o segundo e quinto dia foram realizadas contagens das sementes germinadas de alface. O período de avaliação do experimento foi de cinco dias para alface e 12 dias para eucalipto. Ao final, foram determinadas as porcentagens de germinação, comprimento da raiz e de parte aérea das plântulas. Os resultados demonstraram interferência negativa na germinação e crescimento de alface e eucalipto em função do aumento da concentração do extrato. Entre os aleloquímicos predominantes estão os compostos fenólicos e derivados, com destaque aos flavonoides, terpenos e heterosídeos cardioativos o que pode estar relacionados ao efeito alelopático negativo da aroeira. O uso da aroeira associado ao eucalipto deve ser feito com um manejo adequado.   Palavras-chave: Alface. Aleloquímicos. Anacardiaceae. Eucalipto. Efeito Alelopático.   Abstract Allelopathic compounds can affect growth and inhibit species germination. The objective of this work was to analyze the phytochemistry and the allelopathic effect of  extract of  Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi leaves on the  Lactuca sativa L. seedlings germination and growth and later apply the methodology in red eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis). The chemical compounds were determined in the leaves alcoholic extract, compared and contrasted observing the color change. The lettuce and red eucalyptus seeds were distributed in a gearbox containing filter paper as a substrate, moistened with 7 mL of the fresh leaves aqueous extract in the following concentrations: (0; 12.5; 25; 50; 75 and 100%). For all analyzes and experiments, three repetitions were used. The gearbox was distributed in a completely randomized design, maintained in a germination chamber with a temperature of 20 °C for lettuce and 28 °C for eucalyptus and a photoperiod of 12 hours. Germinated lettuce seeds were counted during the second and fifth days. The experiment evaluation period was five days for lettuce and 12 days for eucalyptus. At the end, the germination percentages, root length and the seedlings aerial part were determined. The results showed negative interference in the germination and growth of lettuce and eucalyptus due to the extract increased concentration. The most frequent allelochemicals were flavonoids, terpenes, tannins, anthocyanins and heterosides, which are probably related to the negative allelopathic effect. AbstractAllelopathy means that one plant produces chemical substances to affect the growth and development of other plants. Usually, allelochemicals can stimulate or inhibit the germination and growth of plants, which have been considered as potential strategy for drug development of environmentally friendly biological herbicides. Obviously, the discovery of plant materials with extensive sources, low cost and markedly allelopathic effect will have far-reaching ecological impacts as the biological herbicide. At present, a large number of researches have already reported that certain plant-derived allelochemicals can inhibit weed growth. In this study, the allelopathic effect of Artemisia argyi was investigated via a series of laboratory experiments and field trial. Firstly, water-soluble extracts exhibited the strongest allelopathic inhibitory effects on various plants under incubator conditions, after the different extracts authenticated by UPLC-Q-TOF-MS. Then, the allelopathic effect of the A. argyi was systematacially evaluated on the seed germination and growth of Brassica pekinensis, Lactuca sativa, Oryza sativa, Portulaca oleracea, Oxalis corniculata and Setaria viridis in pot experiments, it suggested that the A. argyi could inhibit both dicotyledons and monocotyledons not only by seed germination but also by seedling growth. Furthermore, field trial showed that the A. argyi significantly inhibited the growth of weeds in Chrysanthemum morifolium field with no adverse effect on the growth of C. morifolium. At last, RNA-Seq analysis and key gene detection analysis indicated that A.argyi inhibited the germination and growth of weed via multi-targets and multi-paths while the inhibiting of chlorophyll synthesis of target plants was one of the key mechanisms. In summary, the A. argyi was confirmed as a potential raw material for the development of preventive herbicides against various weeds in this research. Importantly, this discovery maybe provide scientific evidence for the research and development of environmentally friendly herbicides in the future.
