ABSTRACT Studies of iodine metabolism have been carried out in 15 pregnant women, 33 cases with sporadic goitre and 11 with thyrotoxicosis. A low plasma inorganic iodine was common to the three groups. In pregnancy and sporadic goitre the thyroid clearance of iodine was elevated and the absolute iodine uptake normal. A high thyroid clearance of iodine in thyrotoxicosis was associated with a high absolute iodine uptake. The results suggest that both pregnancy and sporadic goitre are physiological responses to an iodine deficiency state while the iodine deficiency state of thyrotoxicosis is secondary to increased thyroid activity.

SUMMARY Thyroidectomy and orchidectomy led to significant reduction in the oxidative metabolism of isolated liver and skeletal muscle tissue (at 30 °C) in Calotes versicolor. Thyroxine and male hormone were shown to increase this parameter in intact and orchidectomized lizards respectively. The effects of thyroidectomy and orchidectomy on tissue oxygen uptake were not additive. It is supposed that by its effect on oxidative metabolism male hormone may be of a greater physiological importance for reptiles than for other vertebrates. The present results show also that changes in environmental temperature can counteract the depressive effect of orchidectomy on the thyroid of this species of lizard.

Mycobacterium abscessus was isolated from the lungs of an owl monkey which died 27 days after intraperitoneal injection of herpes virus-infected Vero cells. The lungs and liver had multiple microscopic granulomas with acid-fast microorganisms. The mycobacteria also were isolated from a Vero-cell culture inoculated with a suspension of lung and liver. The same microorganism was eventually isolated from Vero cells of the same source as that used to propagate the herpes virus for the original attempt to infect the monkey.
