Background and objective: Iron deficiency is a well-documented cause of diffuse non-scarring hair loss. We aimed to find the best representative laboratory parameter for iron deficiency. Methods:This was a cross-sectional observational study conducted on 51 female patients with diffuse non-scarring hair loss and iron deficiency state. Iron deficiency was diagnosed as serum ferritin below 30 ng/ml, TSAT below 20% or CHr below 29 pg. Results: Among 51 female patients with diffuse non-scarring hair loss with laboratory proven iron deficiency; low CHrwas reported in 50 (98%) patients, low TSAT was reported in 43 (84.3%) patients, low serum ferritin was reported in 28 (55%). Conclusion:The reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr) shows the highest frequency of iron deficiency in patients with diffuse hair loss and iron deficiency state.

Using unified and developed methods, some hematological, biochemical and indicators of the micro- and macroelement status of the body in Bukhara women of fertile age with a normal hemoglobin health index and iron deficiency have been studied. It has been shown that there are certain pathological fluctuations in some hematological, biochemical and essential hematopoietic microelements in women of fertile age when they develop an iron deficiency state. In particular, there is hypoproteinemia, hypoferremia, hypocincemia, hypocuremia, and hypertransferrinemia. This phenomenon can be used to monitor the state of hemoglobin health in women of fertile age.

The relationship between disorders of iron metabolism and alopecia, in particular telogen hair loss (THL), remains poorly understood and requires further research. Goal. To assess changes in the dynamics of growth and hair condition in women with an iron deficiency state during systemic therapy with iron supplements in combination with and without physiotherapy. Methods. An open-label, randomized, comparative interventional study with a duration of 6 months included 26 female aged 19 to 54 years (38.8 8.9 years) with complaints of hair loss, changes in their structure, dryness and / or hair brittleness; with preserved menstrual cycle and mild iron deficiency anemia (IDA, Hb 101120 g/l). Trichoscopy and phototrichogram were performed with processing of the results in the TrichoScienceProv1.1 program. The changes in the dynamics of hair growth and condition were assessed against the background of the use of iron supplements in combination with physiotherapy and without physiotherapy. Pulsed alternating sinusoidal current of high frequency, high voltage and low strength was chosen as a physiotherapeutic method for the treatment of THL. Results. Against the background of the therapy, an increase in the Hb level (p 0.001) and a positive dynamics of trichological parameters in all patients were noted, the severity of which was higher when the therapy with iron supplements was combined with physiotherapy. Conclusion. Our findings confirm that the complex treatment of patients with telogen alopecia on the background of an iron deficiency state may achieve positive dynamics of trichological indicators.

Background: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common enzyme defect in man. Though G6PD deficiency affects every cell in the body, its primary effects are hematological. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to determine the G6PD enzyme concentration and deficiency states among the term newborns, to see the impact of the enzyme status with development of neonatal jaundice and to delineate any correlation of the G6PD with other hematological values. Materials and Method: Total 100 term newborns were enrolled in the study. Umbilical cord blood sample from the placental end were collected for G6PD enzyme assay, blood counts including reticulocyte count, blood indices and bilirubin estimation. Clinical and other relevant data were collected. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS 19.0 version. Results: Overall G6PD activity was detected 9.86 ± 1.68 U/g Hb and no G6PD enzyme deficiency state was identified. There were no statistically significant differences in the hematological parameters and cord blood bilirubin concentration between male and females. But females have significantly higher G6PD enzyme concentration than males (p=0.002). There were no significant differences in the enzyme concentration in different gestational age groups. There was significant negative correlation between G6PD enzyme and hemoglobin levels, G6PD enzyme concentration with HCT and MCV values. Conclusion: This study could not identify any G6PD deficiency state. So further large scale community-based study is needed to validate this finding and also establish the normal G6PD enzyme concentration in the population of Bangladesh. The ZZ genotype of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is associated with COPD regardless of smoking. Heterozygous MZ-AATD is recognised as a moderate deficiency state, increasing the risk of COPD only among smokers. The risk attributable to SZ-AATD remains debated. We compared 486 AATD-registry participants, to determine whether SZ-AATD was associated with pulmonary outcomes more comparable to MZ-AATD or ZZ-AATD. We found no significant differences between MZ and SZ individuals regardless of never-smoking/ever-smoking (p>0.05 for all). ZZ-AATD was associated with lower FEV1pp than SZ, regardless of never-smoking/ever-smoking, as well as an increased OR of lung-index status and visually defined emphysema on CT (p≤0.002 for all). In our registry cohort SZ-AATD is associated with a risk of lung disease comparable to MZ, not ZZ-AATD.

Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the commonest nutritional deficiency in all parts of the world. In developing countries, the commonest cause is inadequate dietary intake [1]. The red cell indices raise the suspicion of iron deficiency state due to the microcytic, hypochromic changes and the wide red cell distribution width. The iron studies are confirmatory of an iron deficiency state, but are not accurate in the presence of infection, inflammation or malignancy as they are acute phase proteins and are affected in these states making the serum iron studies unreliable under these conditions. The reticulocyte haemoglobin content (CHr) indicates the iron available in the marrow for the production of Hb and are not affected by the above-mentioned situations and therefore has been recommended as a reliable marker of iron status in the body. The value for CHr given in the literature was 25pg [3]. Objectives: General objective was to evaluate the significance of CHr in the diagnosis of IDA. The Specific objectives were to compare CHr with the other conventional iron parameters including serum iron, serum ferritin, TS and TIBC and evaluate any significance of CHr with RBC indices (MCV, MCH and MCHC) and age. Methodology: A retrospective analytical study performed at the Department of Haematology of a Tertiary care hospital in Sri Lanka. Data was obtained from the patient records of those referred to the Haematology department for management of iron deficiency during the period of 9 months commencing from April 2019 to January 2020. Data from 178 adult patients both males and females (16 to 84 years) diagnosed with IDA (S. Ferritin < 20ng/ml) (Hb < 12g/dl in men and Hb <11.5g/dl in women) were randomly selected. In pregnant females the S. Ferritin level considered was <30ng/ml and the Hb level was <11g/dl in the first trimester and 10.5g/dl in the 2nd and third trimester [4]. Blood count and CHr was analyzed using Mindray fully automated analyzer BC 6800, Serum iron and TIBC was measured with Mindray BS 480 and Serum ferritin with Advia Centaur Xp. TS was calculated by dividing serum iron by TIBC and multiplying by 100. A data extraction sheet was used to enter the investigations with the results. Statistical Analysis: Data were double entered and were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. Descriptive statistical methods were used to calculate the median and the mean ± standard deviation of Hb, serum iron, serum ferritin, TIBC, TS, MCV, MCH, MCHC and CHr. Pearson’s correlation was used to evaluate the correlation between variables. Coefficient of determination (R Sq) was used to a statistical measure of how close the data are to the fitted regression line. P < 0.05 was considered significant. Conclusion: Significant positive correlations were observed between the CHr and haematological parameters such as Hb, MCV, MCH, and MCHC and biochemical parameters including serum iron, serum ferritin, and TS (p value < 0.001). Negative correlation was seen between the CHr and TIBC and there was no correlation with age. The mean value of CHr was 22.4 ±4.16pg and median was 22.2 pg.
