Duodenal development in adenohypophyseoprivic, partially decapitated, white leghorn chicken embryos (n = 9–41) was retarded more significantly when no albumen was swallowed. Addition of cephalic-region adenohypophyseal, chorioallantoic grafts to operated embryos lessened the degree of retardation. Duodenal protein concentration and body growth parameters of weight and toe length were not affected significantly by albumen. However, alkaline phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.1.) specific activity and protein content did respond Therefore ingested albumen could normally stimulate these aspects of duodenal development in chicken embryos.
